Hahaha yeah I was suprised to see janet on this list.....hopefully everyone will ignore that, otherwise this thread will turn into those debates on if Elvis was really the King of Rock n Roll (even though we all know it's Little Richard!) biggrin

Yeah lets not go there (I think it's Richard too)

1. You can take Janet's name off of THAT^ list right now. no no no! Janet NEVER wanted to be like Madonna. For anything, she wanted to outsell her own brother Michael (this argument is a thread in itself!). And even fan of dance-pop culture known that today's young artists are stealing their game from Madonna and/or Janet.

2. Kylie Minogue is rather questionable. Yes, she is a Madonna fan and even had her video for I Wouldn't Change A Thing inspirated by Madonna's Material Girls video (itself inspired by Marilyn Monroe). But in the 2000's, Kylie has been getting far more of her game from Donna Summer.

Beyonce has nothing to do with Madonna. Maybe in a business aspect being savvy but outside of that I don't see any parallels.

Worldwide Sales comparison:
Madonna (1983) sold more than Janet Jackson (1982)
Like a Virgin (1984) sold more than Dream Street (1984)
True Blue (1986) sold more than Control (1986)
Like a Prayer (1989) sold less than Rhythm Nation (1989)
Erotica (1992) and Bedtime Stories (1994) sold less than janet. (1993)
Ray of Light (1998) sold more than The Velvet Rope (1997)
Music (2000) sold more than All For You (2001)
American Life (2003) sold more than Damita J0 (2004)
Confessions on a Dance floor (2005) sold more than 20 Y.O. (2006)
Hard Candy (2008) sold more than Discipline (2008)

So there you have it. Between Janet and Madonna’s 10 and 11 studio albums respectively; roughly only 2 Janet albums outsold Madonna’s. The rest of the time when they went head to head, Madonna cumulative sales outdid Janet’s. Let’s just keep it real.

You’re constantly talking about some alleged “Blacklist”. Get over that. The “blacklist” that Janet experienced was fleeting, but stans like you cling to it like the holy grail. It’s your sad security blanket. The Dixie Chicks faced a similar (if not bigger) blacklist, and their album still went on to make a dent. Madonna, herself, went through several stints where she has alienated herself from the media and suffered for it. The difference is that Madonna knows how to recover from her backlashes, and Janet doesn’t. Madonna knows how to turn tables on her naysayers and reclaim the media. Janet doesn’t. When Madonna runs into a dry commercial patch, she keeps her head and presses forward. When Janet’s professional chips are down, she comes apart at the seems; and at best hopes that the next time out her fortunes will magically improve. Madonna evolves. Janet doesn’t. She’s still trying to give us 1993 janet.-era, thinking that all will be okay if she can seduce listeners with the right sexual song, lose 60 lbs. before the album is released, and conjure up more toy story choreography like it’s still ‘89. Backlist, my foot. That excuse worked for a few minutes back in 2004; almost a decade later, it doesn’t.The fact is that Janet is predictable…and from there she became boring…and from there the public has lost interest. You can only recycle “If” so many times before people say no.

I used to be a fan of hardcore Janet’s, and own every single one of her albums (even those 2 flop first and second albums that her stans love to act like don’t count against the rest of her tally; and the last 3 that stans try to blame the Superbowl on for failing to deliver) but the truth is that there hasn’t been a single song Janet has released since “All For You” 10 years ago that I have liked. Not a one. I continued to buy her albums more out of habit than fandom, simply because she represents a nostalgic part of my childhood that I haven’t detached from. I haven’t been content with her in what seems like eons, and from what I can tell, there are others who basically feel the same way; so that backlash excuse doesn’t wash. I don’t like everything Madonna does either, but one thing she’s not is predictable. I know that if I’m not feeling this current phase she’s in, she’ll give me something different the next time. Janet…doesn’t. What you see is what you get. If you didn’t like her last album, you won’t like her next one. It’s the same ol’ with her. She hardly ever changes; her last reinvention was 20 years ago. I’m bored.

But again, the whole “blacklist” thing is largely in your head because you don’t want to face the fact that it isn’t so much a “blacklist” as it is public apathy. There isn’t some corporate conspiracy to keep Janet from professionally succeeding; she just hasn’t done anything in years that the greater media and public has willingly latched onto. That would be like Madonna fans claiming the SEX book is continuing to ruin Madonna’s career all these years later. Please. Walk away.

Far as tours go, your comparison is off. When Madonna was on the road with The Virgin and Who’s That Girl Tours, Janet sat. Therefore she generated “0″ road revenue. Madonna didn’t tour during the same period that Janet did with The Velvet Rope Tour, so there is no comparison there. If you’re going to compare, then compare when they were both on the road at the same time. Even if The Rhythm Nation Tour outperformed Madonna’s debut Virgin Tour from 5 years earlier, the fact is that it *didn’t* outperform The Blond Ambition Tour that was happening at the same time. The Drowned World Tour outperformed The All For You Tour. And we won’t even talk about The Sticky & Sweet Tour vs. The Discipline Tour; because that’s just sad. The ONLY tour Janet did that grossed more than Madonna’s from the same period was the janet. World Tour vs. Madonna’ s The Girlie Show Tour. The former of which played 123 dates versus the latter, which played only 39. So let’s ponder that for a second, Janet plays 123 dates and only grosses $5 million more than Madonna’s 39. Come on now. But you know what? Take it. Since it means that much to you. Score one for Janet. But Madonna toppled Janet on every other side-by-side tour comparison.

You say Janet was the #2 biggest selling female artist of the 1990s. Bully, bully for Janet. Madonna was the #1 biggest selling female artist of the 1980s. Janet has never had a decade where she was the highest selling female act. Madonna has more hit songs in the US and worldwide; she has more #1 albums; she has more Grammy’s. I don’t care if it’s only one or two more; more is more. In the meantime, Madonna was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — despite the fact that her debut album was released almost a year after Janet’s. Billboard magazine called Madonna the “Most Successful Female Artist of All Time.” To Janet’s credit, she was called #2. But I bet it still pierces her competitive stans hearts that once again she was behind Madonna. Madonna is sitting on a fat $120 million dollar recording deal with Live Nation; while Janet is unsigned. Who knows what label she’ll end up at next, but wherever it is, I bet they won’t beat (or match) the deal Madonna has. And don’t even bother trying to use Janet’s past fleeting record-breaking deals to argue back; I’m talking about today.

The ONLY area that I would give Janet credit for being more successful than Madonna is in the area of film; but hell Madonna has a Golden Globe for her performance in Evita. Has Janet won any (real) industry awards for her acting?

Face it, for all your rationalizations, spins, conspiracy theories and excuses, Madonna (whose career started in 1982) has been *considerably* (and almost consistently) more successful than Janet – whose career started in what, 1973? Not only did Janet have a decade head start, but she also had name advantage.

Oh, and I have to throw in real quick that the whole Britney thing is funny. Truth be told, I DO see more Janet in Britney than Madonna…however, it still says something when Britney herself goes through her entire career hanging on Madonna’s tits over Janet’s. Britney can’t shut up about her adoration of Madonna and the influence she supposedly gets from her…but she hardly mentions Janet anymore. And you know what? Madonna fans, by and large, don’t give 2 shits about Britney…while Janet fans have been steady trying their damnedest to get her to acknowledge herself as being part of the Rhythm Nation ever since she debuted. Aside from occasional snickering, Madonna fans by and large don’t give 2 shits about Janet either…yet you go to any area where Janet fans hang out, and you see this never-ending, almost comical, “Jan Brady” bitterness about Madonna because Madonna is, has been, and continues to be the bigger, more accredited star — and the one who the media gravitates to first. And how many times has Madonna pissed off the media (this latest episode included?) Yet the media/public still usually remembers her before Janet. Blame it on the Superbowl again, I guess.

Fast forward to 2011; both women are long past their peaks/primes. Neither are going to sell that many more albums, or have that many more hits, at this stage in their careers. So realistically, the way its always been with Madonna and Janet will be the way it continues to be from now on — with Madonna being the more referenced/acknowledged star, while Janet hovers under her…with her fans bitter about it.

lol lol lol lol lol Success and popularity does not= better. And so what if there's nothing past All For You, you like. Damita Jo is sweet sexy erotica. Not somebody like Madonna just trying to be big by using sex in music. Also Madonna never caused nearly as much of a controversy as Janet. The superbowl thing was on G-rated T.V. Did Madonna dress slutty and sing Erotica when she knew kids were watching. Also I'm gonna say it be prepared:

There still is racism in music and culture. I'm using this as support but I'm just saying. If Madonna did something like this, it probably would pass. But Janet, nope. I mean really, Justin gets off the hook but Janet pays the crime for showing her boob because Justin ripped off a piece of cloh that shouldn't have been ripped off to one of HIS songs, sounds kinda racist or sexist to me.

I'll add Rihanna to the long list of "Next Madonnas" :-

Debbie Gibson

Belinda Carlisle

Kylie

Janet Jackson

Pink

Gwen Stefani

Britney

Christina

Beyonce

Lady Gaga

Kay Perry

Some came closer than others but none of them really had a shot at the title....next!!! biggrin

1. You can take Janet's name off of THAT^ list right now. no no no! Janet NEVER wanted to be like Madonna. For anything, she wanted to outsell her own brother Michael (this argument is a thread in itself!). And ever fan of dance-pop culture known that today's young artists are stealing their game from Madonna and/or Janet.

I'm not advocating that any of the ladies on the list are anything like Madonna... I just distinctly remember all of them being mentioned as the next Madonna in the press, either magazine articles, newspapers, TV or the radio (I have vivid memories of laughing my ass off when Radio 1 introduced a Pink song as coming from the next Madonna! biggrin )

I'm a fan of both artists. I've loved Madonna longer than Janet, but the minute I discovered Janet, I loved her way more and have a much bigger collection than Madonna's. But Madonna is a weakness cause she was my first childhood hero and I have all her albums, and I don't remember a time I didn't know of her, it's like she and mj were always the most famous, and no one really gave Janet the same attention as them at all. For that I think she is underrated. However, I may look like a stan on the outside, but I do not understand Janet fans who think she is bigger than Madonna, who achieved a level of fame that is real and broke barriers for female artists in different ways. I prefer Janet's albums, but Madonna is more daring. I prefer Janet's skills on tour(Madonna used to dance really well on tour, Janet is consistent with dancing even though the best peak was 89 to 01 on tour; and I LOVE Janet's voice when she does different things with it, and I love aggressive Madonna and her energy, they enjoy singing when they sing, I don't care what anyone says about their vocals), and Madonna has already peaked when it comes to tours in terms of her skills, though now they are good for the set design and high energy they give off. Madonna put out stronger albums than Janet in the 00's, though the Janet songs I like from that decade are good though it does seem like she is going back to Janet, VR and All For You though they are easygoing, carefree, feel good songs, and I'm selective with it. I miss the innovative choreography though. Janet's 80's albums are really good, but I remember Madonna in the 80's and those singles and mixes really came strong, and how every little girl wanted to be her, and some people wanted to be like mj, even up until the 90's. I know that happened with Janet too, but I was not seeing it happen until I met people later on who remember her having hits and telling me about their memories, but I don't think it was phenomenal worldwide, or if it was, it was for a short time. Madonna's songs in the 90's were hit and miss though she had creative videos, but to me, from 86 to 01, Janet could do no wrong and outdid most female artists. I still loved Madonna, Mariah, some Whitney, but I thought Janet was the best of them and numbers didn't matter to me. I don't believe she's the second most successful female artist of the 90's though, on a commerical level, but she had the best album deal at one point. I read that statistic and laughed, even though I'm a huge fan and can relate to her. How is that possible when Mariah Carey had outstanding sales and got artist of the Millenium in 2000 female at the WMA's; Whitney had the Bodyguard at 40 million, plus her other albums and soundtracks; and Madonna, if you add Immaculate Collection, Ray of Light, Evita and the other sales? Oh and Celine Dion, who was having multipe diamond albums.

However, I care about Janet as a person and overall more than Madonna, but Madonna's impact is unbelievable for music and for pop culture, and she has a lot of underrated songs that are not your average pop songs that don't get credit, and that's why I get annoyed if people say she's not a real artist, I hate it most when Jackson fans say that cause it makes us all look bad, and I'm in the minority who's a Jackson fan and a Madonna fan,at least online cause people I know in real life usually like both if not one over the other. I feel Janet didn't get enough credit, but she is such an inspiration for her work, and for inspiring choreography in younger artists today. I also saw the Janet similarity from day one with Britney, but was shocked to see young Madonna comparisons when their styles of dress were being compared, and they are nothing alike cause Britney was a Disney puppet then and Madonna struggled to make it lol I do remember Britney crediting Janet a lot though, but also working with her directors, having similar photoshoots, right down to the clothes and hair, working with Tina Landon, I feel like that girl ripped off janet, and used that to get higher sales cause of being younger, and something else I don't want to get into. But if she mentioned Madonna or Madonna wore a shirt with her name, that made bigger headlines.

I consider her an artist. I am a fan of Madonna, I own most of her albums. She just can't sing and is not as good as Janet. I do believe Madonna has had a huge mark on popular culture but Janetr has made her mark too, just not as big as Janet. Also I think people are harder on Janet. If Janet screws up it stays for awhile, but if Madonna screws up, she'll be seen positively in a month or two.

I agree that Madonna is treated way better in the media than Janet, they treat her nicely when it comes to superficial issues.
