PJ Harvey - Rid Of Me

This has to be one of the most defining albums of my life. I'm blinded by this woman's songwritting.

What's your favorite PJ Harvey song?

She's just an amazing songwriter all around. Edgy, interesting, sad, manic, love her to death...

What do you think of "Let England Shake"? I've been listening to it non-stop since it came out. Took me a while to get into her new direction, but its still great.

Change it one more time..

Rid of Me is one of my all time favorite albums. I really don't care for Let England Shake and her current direction though.

I'm curious about Let England Shake and if it resonates more with those in the UK? It almost sounds like a period piece to me. I'm unfamiliar with the stories being told and they don't resonate as much. Are UK fans familiar with these stories, thus resonate with them more?

I agree. I like most of the music that goes with the stories, but the stories don't click for me. White Chalk on the other hand leaves me breathless.

elmer

Albini pushed the quiet-loud dynamics to such extremes that I listen to 4-Track Demos instead. It's more abrasive, contains extra tracks such as Reeling and Hardly Wait from Strange Days film, and she sounds just batshit orgasmic in places where the vocals were near buried on Albini's mix. One could assume that she was not entirely satisfied with the final mix of Rid of Me herself, having released the demo's so soon after. But yes, those songs are fucking fantastic,

It's not easy for me to listen to, I really like 'The Last Living Rose', but I agree with SupaFunky, it just doesn't resonate to me like most of her other work.

I love this album. Despite (or due to) Steve Albini's meddling, it's near perfect. I prefer it over 4-Track Demos.

Rid Of Me is a magnificent slab of Harvey.

I have always admired Polly as a live musician more than her studio work though, I have been lucky to see her live a number of times, and she was different every time, visually and musically. Never boring.
