I said the same thing in your other "best ever" thread....

Not everyone likes the same things. That's what subjective means.

YOU may think he's the greatest, but someone else doesn't feel the same way.

**And for future reference: If you ask a question and someone doesn't agree, you shouldn't argue. You asked. Don't ask if you don't want honest responses.

Or... we could all just say "Yes" to everything you ask. smile

I just hate when people try to force your opinion down someone's mouth and then act like that's not what he or she is doing. It's like you create threads for people to talk in so if someone gives you an answer you don't like, either just ignore it or move on. No need to even be arguing about.

Well, that's pretty much why I do it.

How can you rate somebody over someone else you've never heard and say they're the best ever? I can't say Lassie, Benji, or Rin Tin Tin are the best dogs ever, because I've never seen every dog in existence.

Because I'm TylerHippie, and I love Freddie Mercury voice that much.

Liking someone's voice and saying they're the "best" are two different things. In saying that you like Freddie's voice better than anyone else's you've heard is stating your opinion. In saying that he is the "best ever", you are stating a "fact" and it can't be proven, especially since you haven't heard every male singer. Even if you have, it's still not a fact and only your opinion. If every single person in the world say he's the best, it's still an opinion.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The question was meant for me to find out your favorite singers.

I asked if Freddie was the best to see if anyone agreed with me, and for those who disagreed, I wanted to know who were your favorite singer. That's why I said "to me he's the best".

If your intent is to ask who someone's favorite singer is, then that's what you need to ask instead of so and so is the best or who is the greatest ____. Then someone can answer you honestly and a real discussion can ensue. My favorite singer at this moment in my life is Prince. That's why I climbed aboard the Org. wink

So then that's what you should ask: "Who is your favorite (male/female) singer? Why?

Then you can start with: "To me, it's Freddy Mercury because... " and other people might follow suit.

The way you worded it- and then kept replying that it's Freddy Mercury- is a turn-off.

I never actually answered your question because of the way it's worded, but for me:

Male: It's fluid. I like different things from different singers at different times.

Female: Cheryl Lynn and Jill Scott. I love their voices.

At the end of the day, u can't qualify who is the best.

Even in sports with stats is is still subjective.

I was gonna argue that in sports you can, but really then it depends on if you're talking strictly about the number of wins, or about the artistic element/style.

Even with sports. I say Jordan was the best of all time, but his stats don't say that. (not all of them anyway)

I certainly wont argue with you here. You could make a strong case for why he's the greatest. He's not my ultimate favorite male vocalist (That would actually be MJ) but he is one of the greatest for sure. Freddie was an amazing vocalist. Absolutely incredible. I am always in awe of his voice when I listen to Queen records.

Steve Perry is one of the few that can probably give Freddie a run for his money though. That man can sing his ass off! Damn.

Perry's voice is powerful as fuck, but it's not always all that pretty to listen to. Mercury's voice was prettier and still managed to be really strong at the same time.

there are many that people never mention though. Russell Hitchcock of Air Supply to this day sounds better than he did back in the early 80's and his vocal power is one of the best, Morten Harket of a-Ha is probably my favorite voice because he can pretty much sing anything and make it sound beautiful which is what a great singer has to be able to do, i have listened to him sing things in other languages and i have no clue what hes saying but vocally hes flawless, also holds the record for longest note on a recording. And george michael also i feel is up there.

No Sam Cooke, then no Steve Perry & Rod Stewart.

Sam Cooke certainly did come to mind, but I thought Steve was more comparable to Freddie than Sam. Sam is certainly one of the greatest of all time.

As someone else said though, this is subjective. You can't say anyone is really the greatest anything.

Technically I think Todd Rundgren has a better voice than Freddie. Not taking anyway from Freddie because he's up there no doubt.

Todd def,

Also Jeff Buckley had a better voice.

Bigger range too.

But Freddie is up there no doubt.

get the first greatest hits as they weren't much of an albums band. like abba, the singles were great but the albums were patchy. and hot space was probably their worst

re: the old MJ vs FM as who is best vocalist, freddie wins hands down

why? for someone who some claim to be such a great vocalist, he wasn't able to sing live during his live solo concerts. and no-one gives a fuck about what he did pre-whenever. he mimed during all his solo tours, and mimed through most or almost all of his last two tours. how the fuck could someone be considered a great singer if they lip synch in a concert to a paying audience?

freddy gets the credit from people not just for his recorded work, but for his live performances. live aid in particular was one of the moments when the world took notice. what's the most referred to MJ live moment? mimimg to a song and taking a few steps of the backslide. his live performances were notable for his rehearsed choreography rather than his singing. how could someone consider someone to be the best singer if they mimed most of the time they stood on stage as an adult and the dancing is considered more important to the show than singing?

for that reason alone MJ falls WAY behind in the long list of great singers and for similar reasons it puts freddy up there for many

you are sadly mistaken.. go look at footage from the bad tour, EVERY song i done live, not only is he singing live but also dancing his hard working butt off at the same time..Go look at the dangerous tour, michael sag 9 out of the 14 songs live..songs that were not live were:jam, smooth criminal, thriller, will you be there, and SOME of man in the mirror was live, some was not.. so more that 75% of that tour was live as well, the HIStory tour was mostly lip synched due to michael's bad case of laryngitis.. so your are very incorrect..

freddy is a great singer, IMO michael is the greatest.. im in no way trying to change your opinion, im simply stating that when you said " for someone who some claim to be such a great vocalist, he wasn't able to sing live during his live solo concerts" that was a EXTREMELY false statement..

[flaming snipped - June7]

at least you admit he did lipsynch during his shows. and based on the footage from this is shit, it looked like he was about to try it again

btw he mimed during at least thriller during the bad tour. you can tell when he's singing live and he usually sounds shit and out of breathe compared to the prerecorded vocals. same with madonna and the rest of the shouters. you notice people tend to shout rather than sing when they are out of breathe? interestingly prince NEVER does that, no matter how energetic his performances. watch some of the 90-92 era stuff when the game boys are throwing him about and he still returns to the mic and sounds the same. he must have excellent cardio vasclular and breath control
