In terms of Sammi Davis Jr.

I'm not trying to be anti-semitic, but lets call a spade a spade here. He sang some ditties, read some lines, tappd danced and snapped his fingers....the greatest entertainer ever? Really? I've been more entertained by a hamster on a wheel.

I'm not even gonna talk about Elvis' racist ass.

Michael jackson could sing and dance and make children cream their pants...in more ways than one. One who CONTINUALLY relied on other's instead of himself to remain relevant...while HE ws busy popping pills and and getting anesthesised(sp?)

I'm going to go with someone and give my reason and I expect to be flamed just as much as I flamed....

Robert fickin Johnson

the world first "ROCK" musician. He lived on the fronline and reported what he saw. He wlked that crumbly edge of the grand canyon and told us how it felt, so we don't all have to do it. I'm not speaking to first musical celebrity cuz there' motzart and all that shit. I'm talking Rock & Roll. He purposefuly tempted fate, ultimately paid the price. but his music spoke to the emotions involved in living on the edge....shared that alll with us. I don't believe this was his intent, but it's what happened.

it's a model that is followed to this day. The people who live on the edge(drug use, halucanigins(sp?), sexual escapaades, they roll th dice and put it all the line) and report from the front line action to us so we don't all have to and we can learn from them. Most make it thru, some don't. I salute the soldiers. I don't condone the behavior, but I respect it.

Thought this would be interesting to see. Skip to 0:59 to see Sammy call Mike one of the greatest entertainers ever. Great to see that they had mutual respect.

And MJ, like Sammy, was electrifying from a very early age. MJ studied great entertainers from all eras in honing his craft. At the end of the day, he was a pro.

"This is the legend of Cassius Clay,
The most beautiful fighter in the world today.
He talks a great deal, and brags indeed-y,
of a muscular punch that's incredibly speed-y.
The fistic world was dull and weary,
But with a champ like Liston, things had to be dreary.
Then someone with color and someone with dash,
Brought fight fans are runnin' with Cash.
This brash young boxer is something to see
And the heavyweight championship is his des-tin-y.
This kid fights great; he’s got speed and endurance,
But if you sign to fight him, increase your insurance.

This kid's got a left; this kid's got a right,
If he hit you once, you're asleep for the night.
And as you lie on the floor while the ref counts ten,
You’ll pray that you won’t have to fight me again.
For I am the man this poem’s about,
The next champ of the world, there isn’t a doubt.
This I predict and I know the score,
I’ll be champ of the world in ’64.
When I say three, they’ll go in the third,

So don’t bet against me, I’m a man of my word.
He is the greatest! Yes!
I am the man this poem’s about,
I’ll be champ of the world, there isn’t a doubt.
Here I predict Mr. Liston’s dismemberment,
I’ll hit him so hard; he’ll wonder where October and November went.
When I say two, there’s never a third,
Standin against me is completely absurd.
When Cassius says a mouse can outrun a horse,
Don’t ask how; put your money where your mouse is!
I AM THE GREATEST!"

lowkey

im curious, those who are naming the james browns and sammy davis is it your opinions they are the greatest based on your own eyes or are you just repeating whats been said over the years? how many of you have actually seen any of them perform other than black and white film? nobody can state as fact who the greatest is because we all have different taste and find different things entertaining, for example i find prince and madonna boring as hell, if somebody offered me tickets to see them live i would say no thanks.

There are lots of great Entertainers, I truely believe it depends on your personal music. I am not a rock fan, so no matter how good U2 or Bon Jovi I probably wouldn't get excited about their performance.

I am not true Prince fan, but I do know he puts on a really good show. I have seen Stevie Wonder live and he is absolutely brilliant. I have seen MJ, with the brothers and solo & personally I think he is better with his brothers, not necessarily because his dancing or singing was better. It's more to do with his brothers he connected better with the audience, there was play acting amongst them, his personality would come out more on stage,. However MJ as a solo artist, although he was great, there is not much interaction with the audience and it was almost like him going through his videos on stage, he just stopped to introduce his band and went into song after song.

Hey PurpleThunder---Muhammed Ali as greatest entertainer? Wow, that actually makes sense smile We sometimes forget that athletes are entertainers in their own way, but Ali took it to another level that will probably not be seen again in pro sports again-EVER. Yeah I tip my hat to Ali for being "The Greatest" smile

depends on what entertains you.... one man/woman's entertainment is another man/woman's boredom. for me personally it all depends on what i'm in the mood for.

I don't think sports figures qualify for the purposes of this discussion. Don't get me wrong, I love the Champ. Watching Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Lawrence Taylor, Randall Cunningham, or Joe Montana play was far more entertaining than most musicians in concert could be. But I think we're talking musicians.
