Female MUSICIANS that Rock - (Instruments Only!)

Partially inspired by a comment made by sosgemini, I might do a few of these dedicated to women who seriously play instruments.
Starting off with Nikki to showcase a little spotlight she sent me from a small piece in the Revivalist .

Nikki Glaspie on New Beyonce Album

[img:$uid]http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b59/jbodine/Music%20II/Female/NikkiGlaspie.jpg[/img:$uid]

The Revivalist gives a big shout out to our girl Nikki Glaspie, who plays drums on Beyonce’s most recent studio album entitled ‘4‘ released on June 24th, 2011. Glaspie is a Berklee alum who has played alongside everyone from Vernon Reid, Pharoahe Monch, Meshell Ndegeocello, and has been playing for Beyonce since 2006–starting in her all female band–and has since been on world-wide tours with the pop icon. Glaspie appears on “Party”, “Love on Top”, “I Care” and the bonus track on ‘4‘ “Lay Up Under Me”.

Congratulations Glaspie for representing the hard working musicians out here. We think you deserve a little shine!

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Seeing that the direction of the thread has expanded beyond Nikki Glaspie, i've altered the title to widen the scope.

Please be sure to only include serious female musicians as opposed to celebrities.

(Madonna, or someone similar, holding a guitar on a tune or two doesn't count) wink

Other than that, have at it.

She's for real.

When Beyonce put together the Suga Mama all female band, I was skeptical to say the least.
I called a friend on her crew and asked him if this was just some eye-candy b.s.
He assured me it wasn't. When he said Nikki and Kim Thompson (Kenny Barron, Mike Stern) were the drummers, most doubts dissolved.
He invited me to the last gig on the '07 tour in Vegas: http://prince.org/msg/8/2...6&pg=1

The band was very impressive.

Was this supposed to be just a Nikki thread? boxed

I listened to those clips you posted. In the first one, I got so lost in the groove that I forgot I was supposed to be listening to the drumming first. smile Which is excellent of course.

lol My original plan was to do a series of "Female MUSICIANS that Rock" threads focusing on a particular player.

However it's cool. Have at it. cool

Glad you enjoyed the clips of Nikki.

I don't own any of her cd's. But on the youtube vids she's listed as a musician, writer and producer. In other words "a bad ass woman that ROCKS!!!" I ran across her music only recently and accidentally.

Angela Johnson - "Better" - http://www.youtube.com/wa...bL8oGubvTs

Angela Johnson - "More Than You Know" (Featuring Maysa. Another bad ass!)
