Well, if Paula Abdul were doing here thing today she'd be as big or bigger than she was 20+ years ago. She's got the look, she's a more talented dancer than her would-be competition, she'd have massive production assistance. That's what matters in today's pop music, for the most part.

YUP... thats the ONLY thing that matters to become a IT factor in the industry regardless of real talent. While Paula is not much of a vocalist she would be Janet Jackson number two if she was out today.. Paula can dancer her lil behind off I dont care what nobody says. Even her dancing ability is very underrated.. She did tap, jazz, hip hop etc.

^^This. She basically made choreographers "cool", and now they're almost as big a star as the performer they're giving the dance moves to. Out of all the late '80s singers who were primed to be the next Janet, Paula's one of the few who are still doing things in the biz today.

Au contraire... I agree that the stars out today generally aren't what they used to be but you can't pick any ol' pretty face and stick a top of the line team with them and expect success. C'mon, give people some more credit than that. It doesn't work that way, it's not all that black & white; there are many more factors to it. The person needs to be likable, needs to have presence and some sort of energy to them. They need to have a personality to their image and it can't exactly be built for someone by a team. Also, you can't say that every star out there have no talent. Although I think there are a lot of shitty stars out today, you can't deny that they have some talent. They all have something that makes them successful besides for a production team and gimmicks as much as people don't wanna admit it. There aren't enough stupid people with absolutely no taste or standards in music or performance at once to all support an artist and make them a 'star.'

I do agree, though, that standards for artists today have been lowered. The stars today aren't as interesting or innovative as they once were, although I do think that it is quite difficult to be totally original nowadays. Especially now with the internet and tabloids and what not, our pop culture is more attracted to gimmicks and a show, but again, pop culture is constantly changing. What if what we see today is only a fad and the stars and music will better again someday in the future? What if we're only at a low point? Who knows what the future holds.. Who knows, maybe someone will come in the future and wow us all again wink

I disagree with this because the artists out today DO get credit and some is very UNDESERVING. I dont know about you but I have seen attractive women AND men that have great stage presence and can blow. I have seen attrative men and women who are great dancers. I have seen MORE talented people with MORE talent then the people we are force to look at everyday and I am not just saying that because I dont like them. There are talented people all around us. God has gifted each and every one of us with some sort of talent some are blessed in more areas than others but to honestly say that it will be a rare case to find an attractive person that holds artistic talent is very delusional I have heard plenty and are far more talented then the crap out today. I respect your view though you make a point.

NONE of the currents artists out now have personality that is geniune it is ALL image and masses friendly unlike past artists like Michael and Prince who presented a piece of who they were and it was deemed as "weird" but the irony is they were WHO THEY WERE that wasnt an image tactic.

I agree, a lot of artists out there do get more credit than they deserve but you can't give them NO credit at all.

I never said that.

I guess I'll have to agree with you there... a lot of artists out there are too worried about selling and the attention and recognition and trying to be great and better than the competition which doesn't make it totally genuine although you can't say that there is no personality or no sincerity in their images. The artists today are definitely more manufactured than before but I can't say that it's entirely their fault. I would also blame that on the music industry and record companies as well. They seem to try to control their artists and only accept what would seem to sell instead of trying to put good music out there as well. I can't blame it all on the artists because no one can make it today without all of that control by their labels and what not. shrug
