I think she just may be, yes. Unless you want to include Ja Rule.

But Paula's voice is like nails on a blackboard

It's all about what you look for in a vocalist. To me, Janet is a great singer. Yeah, she's weak and can't really belt but her tone is GORGEOUS and her pitch is great. Plus, her harmonies are flawless! Don't sleep on Janet's harmonies. Plus she can do what a lot of shit singers can't do: project emotion with her voice.

Rihanna certainly can't project any emotion, not that I can detect. Everything is sung in a bored monotone. Eh eh, what's my name, eh eh, what's my name. She sounds soooo fucking bored!

In spite of Madonna's vocal flaws (pitch has always been an issue), I think she's a great singer. She can project emotion, has personality when she sings, and she has a great vibrato. Plus...I just love the timbre of her voice. Listen to Madonna singing Burning Up and then listen to Britney's version. Neither of them are powerhouses but Madonna's version has so much more flava and attitude to it. She knows how to interpret a lyric (as bad as they may be).

Paula has a unique tone that nobody else has. She can be recognized instantly. That's definitely worked in her favor. smile

So basically you like your non-singing divas. lol

Definitly not the worst... She is similiar in a Janet Jackson category. Paula is a great dancer and she is more talented in that area than vocals.

WHATEVER!!!

No doubt kano1987!!!

biggrin Well, I'm all over the place actually. You need to have a huge voice like Chaka, Teena Marie, Patti, etc OR you need a nice tone like Paula Abdul or Kelis. eek lol

Actually, if it's a black woman there's a good chance I like the voice and own the CD. lol

Britney Spears can't sing for shit either.

There's only one "singer" worse than Britney: Janet Jackson.

Ooops...

Have you lost your mind? Janet can sing CIRCLES around Nasally Spears even on her worst day. I think maybe you should have your ears checked.

I agree with some of this but my original point was to show that she really isnt known for her vocals and more so for her chorgraphy skills and I think its funny that people in here are hating on Paulas dancing but the irony is she choregraphed majority of Janets early videos and performances lol but OKAY

Exactly. That's the problem...so many people sleep on Janet's songs, particularly ballads, where she "sangs". And her harmonies are always incredible. Take "Where Are You Now?" from the janet. album, and "Island Life" from Damita Jo, and those are just two songs where her voice is impressive. And the live "I Get Lonely" performance from Rosie back in 1998 is another example. And not only does she have good tone, but her voice is versatile. She can sing softly or powerfully belt (when she wants to), like in "Black Cat" and "What About" from The Velvet Rope.

Thanks for bringing Kelis up. I need to get on it and give her a proper check up. I have heard a few of her recent songs and like them quite a bit. Not to be superficial, but she seems to have something similar in her universal swag to Ms. Monae that I really like.

Back on her older albums, Janet did alot of songs that complimented her voice as well as her vocal range which worked well for her. RN is definitly her greatest time vocally. I love those songs you mentioned but after and during All 4 U she stopped singing and started whispering. She started doing songs that were way out of her range and just songs she should not have been doing in general. I love J but she isnt really a great singer. In the past, she had better songs that suited her voice but now the current stuff has done nothing for her legacy. Probably the two best songs that she has made that I really love her vocals on after All 4 U are Take Care and Make Me Move.

I love paula abdul. lol

But her tone is not the greatest, but not the worst, close to it though, I think madonna has the worst.

I remember someone told me paula killed herself, (the person got her info mixed up, it was a paula abdul fan that killed themselves). Anyways, I was began crying so hard. It was ridiculous. lol And then I looked up the info online, and was pissed, confused, and felt stupid. lol

Paula Abdul is no different from her predecessors and successors.

Britney Spears, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Rihanna, Katy Perry, etc all have meek, weak voices. Drowning their vocals in top notch production really got them far.

Heck, Erykah Badu isn't much of a singer either. But then again someone will come in here and say "She's emoting, blah, blah". lol

you don't even have to have that many octaves, its all about TONE, PITCH, and EMOTING

like for example, i prefer janet's voice over beyonce's. Why because janet has a beautiful tone, stays in pitch, and you can feel the emotion, she is very sensual.

Beyonce over sings (growls, shouts, Yodels), she does stay in pitch, but her songs have on real emotion, its just her trying to show case her range, and technique. It sounds forced and unbelievable.

I wouldn't compare her to Janet or Madonna. Compared to her they sound like Whitney and Aretha.

Paula is a fantastic dancer/choreographer/performer, but has little to no vocal range. She doesn't have a particularly pleasing vocal tone (See Janet) either. Between Paula and JLO, I don't know who's worse.
