Apples to oranges. Get back on topic and stop comparing anyone in this thread to Middle Eastern children.

Really? How? And you were the one who made a big case about people being "shockingly ignorant" for not being exposed or encountering the references of the high & mighty "Wizard of Oz" since its universally known, like a social faux-pas was committed. I'm just letting you know that not everybody is gonna conform to your logic, no matter how popular you think its accepted.

And who's to say I didn't already play the darn thing for them? wink

nod Like I said, it is not popular here in central Europe for example.

With a very special thank you to Tina: Is hammer already absolute, how much some people verändern...ICH hope is never so I will be! And if, then I hope that I would then have wen in my environment who joins me in the A....

It's actually quite easy not to know this if you've never seen the movie. And it's pretty easy not to have seen the movie. If you just have no interest in watching the film, you'll skip it every time it's on. I've never seen the Wizard of Oz ( most people reel in shock when I say that).

eek nod ...I would be one of them, lol. "The Wizard of Oz" is my all time favorite movie. I've seen it probably 100 times, and have owned 2 or 3 VHS versions of it, then like another 2 versions on DVD, I also have the soundtrack to the movie, as well as other CD's by Harold Arlen, who wrote all the songs for this film and many others.

On one hand, I wonder how the hell somone could not have seen "The Wizard Of Oz" since they used to play it every year on the day before Thanksgiving. It's funny how I can remember that because I remember watching it every year while my grandmother was in the kitchen preparing Thanksgiving dinner for the next day. lol Back then, there were just three networks and even if you did have cable back then, the channels only went up to channel 13 so it was very likely that someone was going to eventually wind up seeing it. Plus, with all the lines with that movie that have been repeated in every day life for years. But then again, with me, I was definately going to end up being exposed to it because my mother's name was Dorothy Ann and my grandmother had named her after Dorothy, just like my mother and grandmother named me after Andy Griffith. lol

But on the other hand, especially after hearing people bring up "Star Wars", I can definately see how people would not have seen "The Wizard Of Oz" because I have definately never watched "Star Wars" because it does not look interesting to me in the very least. When they finally did start airing it on TV, I think I sat through 10 minutes of it and changed the channel. And as for some of the characters' names in the movie such as Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader, I'm very familiar with those names even though I've never seen the movie because of constantly hearing those names for years.

However, if you're never exposed to people that are into that type of stuff, you can hear names or phrases and not really know what you're hearing or where they came from. For instance, Alvin Ailey. I've seen the movie "Fame" for years and didn't remember hearing that name used in that movie. But years later, after I was exposed to a place where the Alvin Ailey Dancers were performing, I was watching the movie "Fame" a few months later and heard Leroy tell his English teacher than he was auditioning for the Alvin Ailey Dancers and I recognized the name instantly. I guess what I'm saying is, you can hear names and phrases your whole life and not yet fully "hear" them or remember hearing them until you've been exposed to them on a more personal basis. Alvin Ailey's name was spoken in the movie the whole time but I never remembered hearing it because I didn't know who Alvin Ailey was back then.

lol It's good to be reminded. But my father used to do that when I was a little girl. He'd make that sound whenever he'd be puttering around the house.
