I really dig the music, with the beats a tad primitive, yet haunting and hypnotic. I love that simplistic approach. The singing is ok but I´m a bit spoiled and I think the last time an RnB album really impressed me was when Maxwell´s Urban Hang Suite and Embrya and D´Angelo´s Brown Sugar and Voodoo were released...all excellent and timeless albums, IMO.

This Frank Ocean dude is cool but his singing doesn´t even come close to Maxwell and D´Angelo, and those were , IMO, the last "big thangs" in RnB.

Please tell me he's not related to Billy.

There Will Be Tears sounds very generic because of the autotune and the fast beats. Sounds like some Kanye West shit. It´s okay but could be soooo much better if it sounded a bit rawer and rougher. Can´t stand that autotune style with those beats but this guy does sound interesting.

Thanks for letting us know.

Nature Feels reminds me of Ready For The World, Full Force, Jesse Johnson and all them proud Jheri curl sportin dudes from the 80s in a very good way. Nice and simple song. Love it !

Again, thanks for sharing the news. Really appreciated.

Songs For Women is funny. :lol:If he could get rid of that stupid autotune, things would be so so good.

Nice album, and it´s free.

How and when and where did you discover him?

A friend of mine works for an online mag and he hipped me to him via a FB wallpost. He's the one that declared him the next big thing in R&B. I don't know though. I think he's got madd potential but the overuse of autotune kills some of my enthusiasm for hm.

Impressive. Sounds like what Drake dreams his RnB material sounded like!

cool T4p. I think he has bigger potential than R&B though.

In "Nature Feels" he's definitely getting his Melvin Riley/Prince influenced vocal style on. Cool song. "I've been meaning to fuck you in the garden." Great opening line lol

LoveCrimes is dope too. That dialog with Nicole Kidman from Eyes Wide Shut only adds to this joint.

Novacane is cool. Love that throbbing synth that occasionally comes in. Funny story.

I'm not as impressed with his vocals as much as his vision. DefJam is JustDumb.

Here's something I found....

After getting signed to Island Def Jam about a year ago, the label proceeded to ignore him. Until February 16, that is. That's when Ocean decided to give away his debut album, Nostalgia, Ultra, for free on his Tumblr.

Venting about his decision to drop the record his own way, he took to Twitter on March 1: "i. did. this. not ISLAND DEF JAM. that's why you see no label logo on the artwork that I DID. guess its my fault for trusting my dumbass lawyer and signing my career over to a failing company. fuck Def Jam & any company that goes the length of signing a kid with dreams & talent w/ no intention of following through. fuck em. now back to my day. i want some oatmeal and toast. brunch swag."

I look forward to hearing more from him...

Apparently dude recently worked with Beyonce in the studio. Wonder how that will come out?

I won't judge it until I hear it.

But yeah Def Jam didn't want to release his album at first, so he just put up a free download link and now that they see it's in high demand, they are going to release it to stores on July 26. His single "Novacane" will hit iTunes on May 31. He's an amazing songwriter.
