Justin Bieber Surpasses Michael Jackson

Michael Jackson may have dubbed himself the King of Pop, but the late icon didn't hold the box-office crown for long. Less than a year after the posthumous MJ documentary "This Is It" became the most successful concert-themed film in U.S. history, Justin Bieber is poised to snatch the mantle.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never" has earned $72.2 million in domestic box office so far, passing Jackson's $72.1 million haul. And while Bieber has racked up those impressive numbers in just six weeks, he's got a long way to go before he laps the global receipts for the MJ doc.

"This Is It" has grossed $189.1 million overseas for a global total of $261.2 million. Music films don't typically play well overseas, and THR noted that "Never Say Never" has grossed a more modest $10.8 million overseas so far, with Paramount executives predicting that it could top out around $20 million internationally.

The impressive U.S. numbers were likely goosed by the re-release of the film recently with 40 additional minutes of bonus footage from director Jon M. Chu. Bieber still has a little way to go to climb the list of the top-grossing documentaries of all time. "Never Say Never" is currently stalled out at the #3 position, around $5 million behind "March of the Penguins," according to Box Office Mojo, and well short of the all-time record held by Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11," which has taken in $119.1 million to date.

Bieber set off a classic ...fan frenzy a few weeks ago when he visited Liverpool, England, for his world tour. And just a week later, he posed with his new wax figure at London's Madame Tussauds, checking off another item on the list of milestones to an MJ-like career.

Somebody's quote on the internet in response to this story:

How did this happen???????? seriously people. How did we let this happen??? this is how you know the world of music is now suckish. beiber will NEVER and i mean NEVER be as good as MJ. MJ is awesome and deserves respect for everything he has done for everyone. He has donated MILLIONS to people he does not know. he taught people how to love one another!!! what has beiber ever done? he is a loser who can't sing, dance and looks ugly!!!! I HATE beiber and this generation does not know what good music is if it hit them in the face. i am sooooooooooo glad i was born in the 1990s because this generation is pathetic!!!!!!!! and anyone who says i'm jealous of beiber, what is there to be jealous of?? i rather have a job where i can change lives than be a wannabe celebrity icon!!!!!! i hope the stupid beiber fans read this and know that mj has the best fans in the world because we will never leave his side. and we don't attack other people's wiki page because someone is a sore loser. i will forever be a MJ fan!! R.I.P Mj you deserved better in life. the rest of your fans and i love you more!

It probably happened because This Is It was only playing for a limited time only. Wasn't it only on for about 3-4 weeks extended from the originally planned 2?

It was something to do with trying to get the DVD out for Christmas and how there's some kind of law that a movie had to be X number of weeks off cinema screens before the DVD release was allowed. They used that as an excuse a few times for pulling popular films from the cinema, but it doesn't make complete sense as I know of instances where other films never stopped running at all, or films being released on cinema and DVD simultaneously or just 1-2 weeks apart (e.g. The September Issue). Disney use that excuse a lot as they did with Alice In Wonderland and the first Night At The Museum. ... and in the end the This Is It DVD got pushed back until 2010 anyway.

Fucking ingrates the lot of you...

The kid's a teen idol. I don't hate the kid particularly, but this is pushing it way too far.

If he can stay relevant for over 4 decades, inspire generations of fans, AND produce an album that surpasses THRILLER, then make a big deal. But I'll be damned if I bow down or even acknowledge some kid who thinks he's the shit. Hell, I wouldn't even give him Michael's title. Even if he is Canadian...hmph!

That title belongs to Michael Joseph Jackson king, of Gary, Indiana. It always will be...

Without Michael...Justin wouldn't have anything. Hell, his mentor would have absolutely NOTHING.

'nuff said.

Of course, Bieber is excited to pass one of his idols - though he acknowledges that Jackson is still number one.

"Proud of NEVER SAY NEVER 3D and grateful 2 the fans 4 making it the #1 grossing concert doc of ALL TIME!! MJ is still the greatest! HONORED. But regardless thank you thank you thank you to all those that did and are continuing to support NSN3D around the world. Much love," Bieber tweeted.

"MJ is still and always will be the KING OF POP! and worldwide we got a long way to go. MJ the Greatest EVER," he continued, referring to international sales for "This Is It." Jackson's concert film has grossed $189 million overseas, while "Never Say Never" is far behind at just $10.8 million internationally.
