Face Value remains one of the best albums ever recorded.

If you don't have it (and I doubt you'd be reading this if you didn't) then get it, play it and love it.

^^^ Thank you! That is what I said earlier on this thread! What a terrific album...still among my all time favorites. If you haven't heard it, get it! cool

^^^ I really wasn't aware of such a vehement backlash against Phil Collins. Quite frankly, it puzzles me... Why is he such a whipping boy for the so-called "downfall" of music?! Is it because he is such an ordinary "plain" man--as opposed to the sexier "better-looking" guys? Phil wrote some terrific songs...but he has always been dogged by his appearance. I think that is such a waste...unfortunately, apprearance in recent years has become even more important than it was in the 1980s and 1990s. It is a sad statement about popular music...and popular culture in this country in general. confused

It's not really that surprising when you consider that between his solo career and Genesis it seemed like he was everywhere during the '80s and early '90s. Anytime anyone is that overexposed there is going to be a backlash no matter who it is. Right or wrong in the eyes of many Phil was reprentative of a certain era and when that era passed it's only natural that he would struggle a bit. When you look at the level of success that he achieved, particularly in the mid-late '80s, there really was no place for him to go but down.

GC, yesterday Phil's UK spokesperson clarified that he isn't retiring from music. He's taken a sabbatical due to health concerns.

I never understood the hate for Phil Collins seriously. The man has some good music and a great voice. I dont know why people (alot of caucasian people especially) don't like him. I have always wondered this.

I like the person phil collins, and a few of his songs, I don't see any need for him to retire if anyone still enjoys his music. I can just ignore it! But let this be a lesson. Use earplugs

BREAKING NEWS - A Message From Phil...

Greetings to all, I've decided to write this in response to the articles that surfaced last weekend regarding my retirement. Why they were printed at all is a mystery, as I haven't spoken to anybody in the press for a few months.

However, many of the articles printed over the last few months have ended up painting a picture of me that is more than a little distorted. Therefore, I would like to add my comments and try to explain again my reasons for calling it a day.

1/ I'm not stopping because of dodgy reviews or bad treatment in the press.

2/ I'm not stopping because I don't feel loved, I know I still have a very large fanbase that loves what I do. Thank you.

3/ I'm not stopping because I don't fit in, this was proved with "Going Back" reaching No 1 in the UK, and doing incredibly well worldwide.

4/ I'm not stopping so I can dive full time into my interest for the Alamo.

I am stopping so I can be a full time father to my two young sons on a daily basis.

Some of the things mentioned above have been said by me in various interviews, but said as asides with a smile on my face and in passing. They were not meant to be "headlines", they were small parts of a conversation. This clearly doesn't come over in print and I should know better.

However, the result is that I have ended up sounding like a tormented weirdo who thinks he was at the Alamo in another life, who feels very sorry for himself, and is retiring hurt because of the bad press over the years.

None of this is true.

Thanks for all your messages on the Forum regarding this stuff, it means a lot that you care.
But there's no need for the straitjacket !

Now I loved his statement. He's retiring for his kids. Good for him. He was almost never there for his grown-up kids because of his career.

Here is what I hope for Phil Collins when he makes his grand exit: that he has a full cast of supporting performers all dressed in appropriate Alamo outfits, with guns blazing, and they re-stage the whole Alamo attack, played to "Something In The Air Tonight." That would be a heckuva final bow for a great performer and music-maker! wink

I remember listening to a radio station back in '82, and hearing the thunderous attack from the opening of the Genesis song, 'Dodo/ Lurker' (from "ABACAB"),-------- and I just stopped what I was doing and stood there like an idiot for the next few minutes until the song finished. I was already a fan of Face Value from the year earlier, but Phil had reawakened my love affair with the drum kit right there, and I've been a fan since. Yeah, most of his later stuff was pretty fluffy, but that happens with a lot of artists at some point. I'm still a big fan!!! (and BTW , I agree with earlier posts--Face Value is a MF!!)

There was a point where he became the medias favorite punching bag. As the article says - it was in the 90's when all of a sudden if you weren't edgy or alternative, then you just weren't cool or credible. For whatever reason he bore the brunt of it.

To this day - in the UK at least - you bring up his name and people just laugh.

For me - he has a bunch of great songs and that's all that matters. I don't care about anything else.

Yep in the UK he's a figure of fun with no credibility but in America he seems respected. Even considered cool in the African-American community with an R&B list of covers as long as your arm.

Is there a political element to your hatred? Didn't he go on record with rich conservatives like Cilla Black et al in saying he would leave the country if Labour were elected? Which I guess he did as a Swiss tax exile.

Phil was with a cool fusion band back in the day called Brand X. They were pretty tight.

He left the country long before Labour got elected. My dislike may go back to 'You Can't Hurry Love'. I find him a loathsome little man for some reason. Though he could be a real nice guy for all i know, so i feel a bit bad.

Looks like Philip is having a lil' bit of pity party and that's understandable to a degree. Will anyone miss him? Honestly, no. Time waits for no one and all things come to an end. : shrug:

Speak for yourself.

There's a ton of us who have enjoyed his work over the years and WILL miss him.

My brother, who is in his mid twenties, has been blasting "In the Air Tonight", on and off for days now - ever since he apparently heard me singing it through the walls. We both love his music and there's millions of others all over the world who feel the same way.
