yaaaay! charles mingus is actually my favourite bass player, after james jamerson.
this is one of the greatest bass lines of all times, from one of the greatest albums of all times.

Dont' cha hear Mingus, swingin' his butt off? This album was in response to critics that said, Mr. Mingus couldn't swing. Brilliant album. Nice post Harle.

Harle, are you hip to this? A collaboration between Joni and Charles, it's the last recorded work he did.

x1000
I actually purchased it along with all of her previous albums and her Geffen boxet from Itunes this VERY day, I watched the film Woman of Heart & Mind last week, and it put a very lasting impression, it dawned on me how much of a big disservice I've been doing to myself by not listening to her music. I remember you singing Hejira's praises in the past years and I've taken mental notes ever since, it just happens that I'm only following your advice now.
Ya know, Joni's music is a helluva pill to swallow, at least for me, I have to crush it, stir it into the water and take gradual sips and let the effect take its course.

Got any tips for me?
The only music I have from Mingus is his work as a sideman to Lionel Hampton, Hazel Scott & Dinah Washington. I have to admit that I'm not familiar with his music.
One of my aunts(another avid music listener) told me before that Joni Mitchell & Charles Mingus will completely change how I listen to music. I'm not sure if thats a good sign because I'm already a BIG music snob And its interesting that she said that, because I never knew that they(Joni & Charles) actually worked together prior to watching Woman of Heart & Mind.

You're so classy.
I've always been way more into a folky sound than any kid born in Bone, Thugs n Harmony's neighborhood should be. With that natural inclination toward Joni's early stuff, the trajectory of her career has just been sort of a natural fit for me. I can see how she might be an acquired taste, though, particularly the stuff following Mingus until, say, Turbulent Indigo. Most of her '80s output is really challenging for me to appreciate. She is, BIG TIME.
I remember listening to Blue in somebody's house(I don't remember the person, but I remember the incident how about that). The whole damn album sounded so gloomy, it felt like an open wrist was in order
And BOY, did the story of "Little Green" stop me in my tracks I've been braggin' about being a an adventurous music listener up until that point, I was not able to put my money in my mouth.
Unfortunately, the film revived my interest, and I'm loving what I'm hearing right now

oh, wow, where to start with mingus. that's a good question. the first album of him that i got was "the black saint and the sinner lady", which is an absolute masterpiece. but it is a bit hard to get that one first since it's quite overwhelming.
a good startingpoint might be "mingus ah um", it's very accessible with short, well rounded cuts that introduce you to mingus in a soft, easy manner. from there on you can branch out into all of his other glorious stuff.
other really good ones are:
mingus, mingus, mingus, mingus, mingus the clown mingus at antibes oh yeah Pithecanthropus Erectus
as far as joni is concerned, i agree with you that she's a bit of a big pill to swallow if you just discovered her. most of her albums are classics, but hard to crack at first listen. i've had to let them sink in for years before i could really enjoy them all the way through. but it's a very rewarding wait.
