November 10th: ROBYN at Terminal 5, New York City
This was my third time seeing Robyn this year and was the best show of the three. She is a whirlwind of energy onstage. It's amazing how much the sold out crowd loved her too.
Setlist:
Fembot

Encore 2:

Janelle Monae/Of Montreal October 29 The Warfield, San Francisco
Janelle was incredible. It was my first time seeing her and everything about her was great. I loved her voice, her energy, and I think she is VERY attractive. Her set was just about an hour long, I just wish she was the headliner because one hour was not enough.
Of Montreal was probably the strangest show I have ever seen. The music was cool but sometimes there was just to much craziness going on. I know it is just part of the show but sometimes less is more. Anyone that thinks Prince is flamboyant needs to see Of Montreal's lead singer Kevin Barnes.

Oh man, it's been a while. I think it was Jay Z and R Kelly Best of Both Worlds, both before the "breakup" and after. Jay, no lie, rocks in concert! R was good too.

Junip w/ opening act Sharon Van Etten Lee's Palace Toronto, Nov. 5
Van Etten is an impressive lyricist/multi-instrumentalist, who really constructs a good groove to be so young in her career. Her songs drone on a bit yet, but I expect this won't long be a problem as she seems promising enough to churn out increasingly nuanced compositions in years to come. She also came off a bit unsure onstage, but her nervous banter was strangely endearing, and she did effectively win the crowd over.
In contrast, Junip's lead singer, Swedish-Argentinian guitarist Jose Gonzalez, was darned near silent (despite perfect English), preferring only to occasionally smile at audience shout-outs and comments. As such, there wasn't much of a rapport with the audience outside of the familiarity of a setlist drawn mostly from their latest album. The music -- and their sheer talent to viscerally jam away -- was solid enough to make the night a success, but I think they could benefit from a bit more personability and maybe revisiting the arrangements of one or two songs in particular that could have absolutely blown the roof off of the house! I saw J'Davey @ S.O.B.S. in New York City on June 29th 2010. Hal Linton opened for them. Hal didn't do much for me. He has a nice voice and style but it's too easily forgotten after he stops singing. As for J'Davey (Miss Jack Davey & Brook D'leau) they ripped it!!! They opened with a cover of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and then launched into their own songs. standouts for me were "Division Of Joy, Private Parts, Get Together". They definitely turned it out and I'd love for them to hit NYC again soon.
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Its been a really OFF year for me here in nyc, saw a few shows early on in the year and then in May a-ha did a 3 show run here in NYC, and that was my concert experiences going to see them all three nights and being up front and center for all. I mean usually i'll see at least 10-15 concerts here in nyc, but this year i will be topping off with 7, still have 3 more shows with a-ha but those are the last ones in Norway.

A few of the 100's of shots i got.
The shows each ran about 2hours each night, a little more the last night, no breaks, except a 2 minute wait for the encores
SetList basically ran like a rewind of their career
1. Foot of the mountain 2. the bandstand 3. analogue 4. forever not yours 5. minor earth major sky 6. summer moved on 7. move to memphis 8. the blood that moves the body 9. stay on these roads 10.the living daylights 10. manhattan skyline 12. we're looking for the whales 13. i've been losing you 14. cry wolf 15. the swing of things 16. early morning 17. and you tell me 18. hunting high and low 19. the sun always shines on tv 20, take on me
All 3 pretty much stuck to this set list, the shows were at the Nokia Theatre all 3 were sell outs. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I was at that show! Miss Davey's performance reminded me a little of Prince circa 1980-81.

I saw Richard Thompson in Milwaukee last week.
He was amazing. (If you aren't familiar, he's consistently mentioned as one of the truly great songwriter/guitarists ever.) The concert was in support of his latest CD, Dream Attic, - and it was the first time I'd ever seen him with a full band. He played for well over two hours and the show was incredible. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

paloma faith i saw her a few nights ago, quirky theatrical/ burlesque style.. LOVE her debut album, just very girlie singalong stuff, nothing heavy, it went platinum in uk small venue, historical building the set was amazing, trees, rivers, benches & bridges the band so cool tbh i didn't expect too much but show was excellent, very entertaining she sang stuff from her album, some new stuff & couple of covers,
this clip from the summer not the best vocal (shame cuz she can sing) but u get the idea.
i'm so lucky, so far this year i saw prince 3 times (france belguim italy) enjoyed the monster ball lady gaga in the spring.. & blondie, yeah that was a great gig i got paul weller in couple of weeks, god i love that man, & scissor sisters in december.. can't wait thank god 4 live music

The last show I saw was Nas and Damian Marley. Some people can't get into reggae but it's right up my alley and we had great seats,
Distant Relatives was my favorite album this year so I couldn't wait. I've seen Damian in concert with his brothers before, so I knew he wouldn't let me down.
The show started at 8:35 and opened with Jamaican singer, Gyptian. [img:$uid]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y240/delivertheword/becool/100_1514-1.jpg[/img:$uid]
9:20, Damian and Nas Set...live band was off the hook! [img:$uid]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y240/delivertheword/becool/IMAG0073.jpg[/img:$uid] As We Enter Move/Exodus Welcome To Jamrock Strong Will Continue
Nas Set, (don't know the song titles)
Damian Set (tribute to Bob) [img:$uid]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y240/delivertheword/becool/100_1534.jpg[/img:$uid]
Damian and Nas encore... [img:$uid]http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y240/delivertheword/becool/100_1527.jpg[/img:$uid] Leaders Africa Must Wake up Dispear Count Your Blessings
The show ended at 11:10. My only disappointment is they didn't do Patience, my favorite. But we still had a blast!

I saw Damian with Ben Harper a few years ago and they were both great. It was a GA show and I was about 8 people back in the center. I am glad you enjoyed yourself.

I'd love to see Ben Harper one of these days.
I don't run across many Damian fans on the org, but I love the guy.
Most of the Marleys live here so they do a big festival together every February for Bob's birthday. I plan to attend it again next year. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

Oooh, thank you for this! I have not heard of her, but she seems like someone I'd like. Plus she's kinda hot and this song is nice. If you will, so will I

November 16th: THE JOY FORMIDABLE at Bowery Ballroom - Sonically akin to the shoegazing bands of the 90s, the one big difference between this three-piece Welsh band and those acts of old is that singer/guitarist Ritzy Bryan, bassist Rhydian Dafydd and drummer Matt Thomas were clearly enjoying themselves onstage among the many birdcages strung with lights. This was the last night of their U.S. tour and they whizzed through a short set consisting of tracks from their lone EP A Balloon Called Moaning plus a few from next year's debut album. Ritzy tried her best to not be her usual chatty self (according to her) between songs, but the audience didn't seem to mind at all as the band came across as very personable and genuine. There was no encore, instead the crowd was treated to an extended version of "Whirring" that threatened to blow off the roof complete with some kind of siren crank that Ritzy pulled out near the end. One of my favorite new bands, if not before, definitelty now.

Summer Sonic festival, Osaka. Stevie Wonder headlined one of the nights, and it confirmed to me that Japanese people don't dance, they all stood military style, pretty crazy. Great festival tho

I just got back from my third night in a row at The Fillmore. A Perfect Circle played three nights, playing one album in its entirety each night. Although the first night was my favorite album(Mer de Noms), it was probably the worst show. It started out sounding great but then the sound guy made some adjustments for the worse. They only did two songs after playing the whole album, one of which was an awesome version of Ashes To Ashes by Bowie. The lead singer(Maynard James Keenan) seemed to be pacing himself for the 3 night stand and you could tell he was holding back that first night. It was still better than alot of bands I have seen.
They performed Thirteenth Step the second night and it was an incredible show. They had the sound dialed in and the band was very tight. Maynard admitted it probably was not such a good idea to try and do an album each night seeing as how he really pushed himself vocally when he recorded these albums. He really stepped it up for this show however and sounded excellent. Once again we only got two songs for an encore, 3 Libras and Imagine.
I went to tonights show thinking it would not be very good. They performed eMOTIVe, which is an album of covers and my least favorite of the three. Man was I wrong, it may have been the best of the three. It is hard to decide between the second and third nights. The covers included Imagine by Lennon, What's Going On by Marvin Gaye, People Are People by Depeche Mode, Freedom of Choice by Devo, When The Levee Breaks by Zeppelin, and Fiddle and The Drum by Joni Mitchell to name a few. Maynard and the band sounded amazing doing all of these tunes. They ended with a mashup of Diary Of A Madman and LoveSong by The Cure, I know it sounds strange but it worked.
I was about eight people back the first two nights and three people back tonight. Lead singer Maynard stands in the back of the stage on a riser, never coming out front. He does the same with his other band TOOL. I have seen TOOL 13 times and he is one of the best frontmen I have ever seen, even if he never comes out front.
For those of you not familiar with A Perfect Circle, here is a clip of them performing on Last Call with Carson Daly last week. This is a track off their 2nd album Thirteenth Step, and yes that is James Iha on guitar formerly of the Smashing Pumpkins. [Edited 11/19/10 12:58pm]
