Well Richard you KNOW there's a difference between the studio and live performances. Of course to you she may sound uninspired and generic but guess is if we had a chance to do something like that we would flub at the first times we try it and give it up.
This ain't like an easy thing to do. To some jazz music is "lazy"... I don't think it is.
Oh I totally appreciate Jazz. I want her to BRING. IT. It's Like Prince's covers of BBGW and LLLMILY, it's like he held back out of deference. Sorry, if you can kick someone's ass because you have that much talent, it's not blasphemy to kick their ass by just doing what you naturally do!
I can't stand the music for this song. It bothers me. It reminds me of something you should hear in a sex dungeon
Richard, I think your judgement went to lunch on this one, dahling
Her enthusiasm in this song alone makes the song brilliant to me. Its like she's saying to her critics "You thought I was your average R&B siren, didn't you? Think AGAIN!". And the background vocals are one of her BEST per4mances, many people rightfully give her praise for her wailing, but this song showcased what a mad & underrated vocals arranger she is, to ME this is what coined the phrase "wall of sounds".
Another thing, the song is also a perfect showcase of her "horn like" singing, I'm not talking about scatting here, but the singing alongside the phrases that came out of the horns that played those songs originally,,,,Dizzy & Bird are likely the case.
You have to listen to the original recordings of those songs by Dizzy & Bird and then compare them to her singing, you'll be astonished by what you just heard. This is why I said its a tour-de-force performance.
EDIT: The song is also proof to those who won't admit that the human voice ISN'T an instrument.

I'm going to have to post some Chaka singing Jazz standards om my YouTube music channel, some people have missed out on that aspect of Ms. Khan's career.
