ORG MIXTAPE PROJECT: Meloh9's Something Funky In The Mail Volume 2: Carmen's Revenge http://8tracks.com/vincen...-s-revenge
* kids sketch My mix is based on Volume 2 of a series of mix tapes I have been mailing friends of mine on CD. Particularly the beautiful Carmen X. The mood I tried to create this time around was that of local underground late night radio in the 70's. As you listen imagine a kid at an impressionable age, when music sounds the most vivid and new, staying up to catch local acts and the kind of funk he can't hear on regular day time stations where he lives. He turns on the radio, pulls out his sketch pad, and tries to imitate the art work of his favorite artist, Pedro Bell. What he heard may have went something like this.... Amnesty - Lord Help Me I decided to kick things off with the jazzy temptation/funkadelic influenced independent funk band Amenesty what a groove I know other orgers have used 10 songs, and so have I. I bent the rules somewhat, I added two radio spots to add to the feel of underground radio, this one by Curtis Mayfield. So keep your nose clean and remember Freddy's Dead While this joint was not produced in the 70's who can tell? It would have been a welcome addition to the funkadelic album America Eats It's Young. It's inclusion is my personal shout out to Gary Shider who performs a guest vocal. * hang in there Gary, we love you and thank you for the funk. Drugs: The prescription for Mis - America - Mis - America On the original mix tape the swirling feedback of the tape delay effects are interrupted without a pause by a bass thump from none other than Larry Graham as Betty Davis declares no I don't want to love you in her Anti Love Song. Perfect - A - Funk, no other words. Many are probably familiar with the relatively recent swoon of region based funk compilations that have been popping up. My selection for this comp comes from the Florida Funk compilation, a track from Pearly Queen called Quit Jiving as the set soon takes an underline about a female or performed by a woman theme throughout. Funkadelic's Ms Lucifer's Love as taken from the album America Eats It's Young, need I say more? I opened up Pandora's Funk Box, P Funk. Created to be the female version of Parliament, Parlet r.i.p Mallia Franklin. For this comp I chose Cookie Jar, my favorite Parlet jam. Aint that Lovin' you babe? This was a close call between the fuzzy haskins original. I Promise To FUNK, Promise To Keep It's Promise, You'll Keep The Funk Soundtrack time! Next selection is by The Blackbyrds from the original soundtrack Cornbread Earl And Me, my selection the much sampled Wilford's Gone. we pause for another radio spot. the kid whos ears we listen through lives up the street from the local drive in, he can't wait to see the latest blaxploitation movie marathon On the flip side, every true funkateer knows that The Brides Of Funkenstien were created to mirror Funkadelic, where Parlet like Parliament had more disco/dance influenced grooves The Brides focused on heavy funk grooves and experimentation, both groups funky as a mug! This time around we bring you Birdie from their debut album Funk Or Walk This last one was a tough choice. The original mix is a few songs longer, after the brides on the CD it slams without a pause into Sly's alternate version of Babies Makin' Babies.. true funk overdose and I wouldn't have it any other way. However for the org we skip that track and conclude this set with James Brown's Mind Power. I chose this song for a special reason, tightness. The song has at least three major changes, and the band doesn't miss a beat. Note how James toward the end was able to take the band right back to the *top Tight, Tight Tight! Military Funken', who worked a band this hard? While Prince keeps a tight band, and Parliament Funkadelic had a looseness and tightness about the grooves, I argue that James had and always will have had the tightest band of all. This concludes Something Funky In The Mail Volume Two: Carmen's Revenge and thank you for funkin' along with me * Carmen X

This round has been crazy Funk/Old School R&B heavy. I LOVE it!
I'm backed up well over a month on these mixes. Catching up is really gonna make my early summer. [Edited 5/17/10 9:23am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

The album was never released and the recording sessions are from Sep 22, 1973-Nov 20, 1973 here is the now again link good stuff, http://www.nowagainrecord...essions-2/ I put radio spots on all my mix CDs to give it a vintage radio vibe, that's actually not the album cover for Drugs, but I used that photo for the pic of Gary, here us the album cover for Drugs

Lord Help MeI thought this was going to be an instrumental This is fu-uh-unky Oh, I'm lost in a fantasy…. Do you know how badly I wanted to revisit that harmony?!
Radio Spot I thought you were gonna put a Curtis throwdown. I won't count this Mis-America NO YOU DIDN'T! OK, someone years ago made me a mix and it had "Hooked On You" and I went WHO THE HELL IS THAT?! He said some obscure group named Drugz and I went searching for their stuff and couldn't find anything. I looked for them with a Z and not an S because that is how he spelled the name. I see you have with an S so I did a search and still find nothing Help me out! Ok, wait. I entered "Mis-America" in CDnow.com search and it returned The Prescription for Mis-America. Is this it? This band is off the hook crazy ass good! Anti Love Song Work it Betty. I really must know what this chick's story is. I mean seriously. Dressed in space outfits and writhing. Quit Jive-In for some reason this really sparked something in me that wished all this racial hatred we are seeing in our country could have been battled and elimated by music, art and creativity. Miss Lucifer's Love Really, how did black artists become so uninspired and unvisionary? How many stories is Funkadelic responsible for telling? Thank GOD for this creationary force. Cookie Jar I love how down home and simple this track is Amazing how Prince heard this and came up with his version. A truly WTF moment but brilliant too Wilford's Gone Cool Instrumental Blacxploitation Drive-In Triple Feature God, this made me so nostalgic. A child of the 70s I just remember seeing all those cool and crazy movies. Birdie The world needs a modern day Brides! Do you know who Joi Gilliam is? I think she was a Bride or a bride to be but nothing seemed to come of it. She is the bomb and I can totally hear her throwin down on tracks like this Mind Power Nice closer Excellent Excellent EXCELLENT MIX! 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

She is the bomb and I can totally hear her throwin down on tracks like this Mind Power Nice closer Excellent Excellent EXCELLENT MIX! Thanks! As far as Curtis the original mix has a track produced by Curtis later on. On And On as performed by Gladys Knight and The Pips from the original soundtrack Claudine. I had my buddy Steve on the phone and we were listening to all these great songs and by the time we got to Mind Power I was like, how do you follow up James? then I put on On And On, my boy was like how do you follow up genius? with another genius! I had to cut it becuase other orgers followed the rules and kept it 10 songs. I love Cookie Jar! I have been listening to all three versions lately. I really love Fuzzy's original version, it has a certain charm to it, I wondered if Prince heard Fuzzy's version also, or which one inspired him the most or both. I like how Prince samples "baby!" from the beautiful ones in his cover of cookie jar. But damn did Parlet own that song or what? I discover Drugs on myspace back when myspace was still popular and I was trying to track down all of the fellow funkaholics on the system. I was under the impression that it was always Drugs with an s and that the full band name was Drugs The Prescription for Mis - America. I found the track Mis - America on itunes. here is the track listing for the original mix Something Funky In The Mail Volume Two: Amnesty - Lord Help Me taken from the album Free your mind: the 700 west sessions Curtis Mayfield - Radio Spot as taken from the compilation Superfly Delux Edition DRUGS: The Prescription for Mis-America - Mis-America from the album - Drugs Betty Davis - Anti Love song from the debut album Betty Davis Pearly Queen - Quit Jiv'in from the compilation Florida Funk: 1968-1975 Funkadelic - Ms Lucifer's Love taken from the westbound album America Eats It's Young Parlet - Cookie Jar taken from Pleasure Principle The Blackbyrds - Wilfords Gone taken from The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Cornbread, Earl And Me Radio Spot - Blaxploitation Drive-In Triple Feature from the compilation Sex, Sleaze & Soul The Brides Of Funkenstien - Birdie from the debut album Funk Or Walk Sly & The Family Stone - Babies Makin' Babies (alternate version ) from the album Fresh James Brown - Mind Power taken from the album The Payback Gladys Knight & The Pips - On And On from the original motion picture soundtrack Claudine Adrian Younge - Chicago Wind from Black Dynamite (Original Motion Picture Score) [Edited 5/19/10 18:16pm]
