i have to say that i am just as confused about katherine. i read over at friedman's blog that she's writing a book with ... wait for it ... marc shaeffel, one of the parasites who was around toward the end of mj's life. (they claim it's not for money and anyone who believes that i have a bridge in ny i'd like to sell you). this is why i say i don't hold out very much hope for mj's kids in the long run. the same self-interested, money grubbing greed will be visited upon them as it was on their dad. why would katherine allow this man back into the jackson fold? schaeffel's interest is in ultimately getting to those kids and profitting off of them. they were too young to know who this man really is, and because of that, i doubt mj talked to them about everything he went thru with him, so the person they should be relying upon to 'keep them safe' is the one person schaeffel is going to use to get to them. but then again, she did allow joe to use the kids to promote his unauthorized belts, didn't she? neutral

I got sick when I saw this earlier. I just don't get what is the deal with this family and leeches. That's why I say it's inevitable that the kids are going to be exploited. No way with this familly they're not at some point going be taken advantage by folks.

Rebbie is best friends with...Stacy Brown (remember when she defended him from Michael during the trial?) while Joe gets on with Daphne Barak and Latoya hangs out with Victor Gutierrez. What puts me on my nerves is the following: Michael refused to have contact with his family. He kept them away. The family, in order to justify this, came up with the drug addiction excuse. So, despite the fact that they were clueless about his life, the family immediately jumped at conclusions the moment Michael refused to see them. It's never their fault: it's always someone else's. So, now they call him a junkie everywhere. Simply because Michael refused to have contact with them which propelled them to think he was hiding something, so they came up with the drugs excuse in order to justify the distance. They couldn't understand that it was their fault so, eager to justify the fact that Michael wanted nothing to do with them, they came up with the drug addiction excuse.

Hmm about the possibility of Katherine and Marc getting together to write a book...

More details on instrumental album Michael Jackson started before his death, and his love of classical music

TV and film composer and conductor David Michael Frank may have been one of the last persons to collaborate with Michael Jackson on an artistic project. The pop singer’s untimely death left that project in an uncertain state. Initial reports suggested that Jackson planned to do an album of “classical music” he had written; the pieces were to be orchestrated by Frank. Actually, Frank says, the pieces were closer to film music and would have gone into an all-instrumental album had Jackson lived. The Baltimore-born Frank, interviewed by phone in California, gives an account here of his experience with the King of Pop:

Four or five months ago, I received a call from Michael Jackson’s longtime personal recording engineer, Michael Prince, who told me Michael was looking for someone to arrange some music for orchestra. I thought it was going to be for the tour he was going to do. For the next month or two, he would call, saying, ‘Michael Jackson says he’s going to call you.’

At the end of April, another Michael, Michael Jackson’s personal assistant, called me and asked me to come the next day at 10 a.m. and asked me the make and model of my car. I drove to the Holmby Hills home. I drove up to the front door, and was met by an assistant who told me to go inside. I was met there by a woman dressed like a housekeeper, but with a white turban on her head. She said, ‘Michael Jackson will be with you shortly.’ About two minutes later, he came down the stairs.

I was reluctant to shake his hand because I had heard that he was concerned about germs, but he immediately stuck his hand out and gave me a very firm handshake. He was very skinny, but not the least bit frail. He was wearing a suit and a hat. He was going to rehearsal later for the tour. He said, ‘You look familiar.’ I told him a long time ago I worked on a TV tribute to Sammy Davis, Jr. at Shrine Auditorium [that he had participated in]. I told him I had met him briefly there.’ He said, ‘I never forget a face.’

He told me, ‘I have three projects going on simultaneously.’ One was the tour that the whole world knew about. The other two I believe no one knew about. One was to be an album of pop songs. Then he said, ‘The other one is that I want to record an album of classical music’ — what he called classical music.

He said he listened to ...

classical music all the time; it was his absolute favorite. I was impressed with the pieces he mentioned: Aaron Copland’s Rodeo, Fanfare for the Common Man and Lincoln Portrait; Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. I mentioned Bernstein's On the Waterfront. Then Michael mentioned that he loved Elmer Bernstein's film music, too, and he specifically mentioned To Kill a Mockingbird.

I realized that almost all the classical pieces he mentioned are childlike, very simple and pretty, like Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf and Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite. He also mentioned Debussy several times, specifically Arabesque [No. 1] and Clair de lune. He was very soft-spoken when were talking about music, but when he got animated about something, he was very changed. When he mentioned how he loved Elmer Bernstein, and I said I liked the Magnificent Seven score, Michael started singing the theme very loudly, almost screaming it.

He said, ‘I’m making a CD.’ Then his son, Prince Michael, came in, and Michael asked him to find a CD player. Paris found one and brought it in with Prince. Michael played the CD. It was very pretty music. He said, ‘But a section is missing.’ He played a second piece. And he said, ‘But a section is missing, too. But I can hum it to you.’ I asked if there was a piano in the house, and he said there was one in the pool house. We headed out there, but Michael stopped when he saw the dog was outside, soaking wet from being in the pool. He didn't want us to get splattered. It was kind of funny. Michael got another assistant to hold the dog while we went to his pool house.

I sat at the piano and Michael hummed the missing part of one of the pieces. I had taken a little digital recorder with me and asked if I could record him. He was in perfect pitch. I tried to figure out chords to go with it as he hummed. He said, ‘Your instincts are totally right about the chords.’

We talked about classical music some more. I played some Debussy pieces. Michael seemed very happy and I think he felt very comfortable with me. He mentioned Leonard Bernstein again, and I played some of West Side Story. He told me he had met Bernstein once and that Bernstein had said he was a big fan of Michael’s.

Back in the house, whenever he’d go from room to room, you’d hear, ‘I love you, Daddy.’ ‘I love you, Paris.’ They all seemed pretty normal and happy.

Michael was very anxious to get the pieces orchestrated and record the music with a big orchestra. I suggested we record it at the Fox, Sony or Warner Brothers lot. I asked if he could have someone call me to discuss the budget and he said he would take care of it. When I left there were several fans outside the gate.

[Later] I talked to Michael on the phone. He asked me how the project was going and I said I was waiting to hear from someone so we could set the deal. I suggested we could record the music in London while he was doing the show there. He liked the idea. He again brought up Arabesque.

I laid the music all out on my computer and started on the orchestrations. Finally, a week before Michael died, his manager, Frank Dileo, called and asked me for an email with the budget and an electronic mock-up of the music, the costs of orchestration.

Now I have no idea what’s going to happen with this. I’m hoping the family will do something to get this done. I will not bring it up [with them] until after what I think is an appropriate time.

My guess is that each piece would be seven to ten minutes long. [Each one] is more substantial than a song. It’s very pretty music. One piece had an Irish quality about it. I suggested that we could use a Celtic harp. The pieces sound like pretty film score music, with very traditional harmony, and definitely very strong melodies. One of them was a little John Barry-ish, like in Out of Africa -- that kind of John Barry score. I could hear [in my head] sweeping strings and French horns in unison.

I told Michael I was going to use one of Leonard Bernstein’s batons I had bought at auction when we did the recording. I knew he would have gotten a big kick out of that. I guess I still will use that baton if I ever get to conduct the music.

In honor of Michael Jackson's interest in classical music, as reported by David Michael Frank, here's a performance of Debussy's 'Arabesque' that the late singer apparently held in high regard:

^ I know right. For some reason, I love that he's a classical music junkie.

Mike has mentioned Debussy since the 70's. Lols!

I'm sure he likes Chopin as well. I mean, he would have stumbled along a Choplin composition sooner or later...

Maybe it's just me but I do see influences of Vivaldi and Debussy in his works especially in his History album.

I don't know if they underestimated him or if they were just constantly surprised at what he did do,because practically everything he did was amazing, inspirational, awe inspiring, mouth dropping, blowing your mind magical.

I really hope that they do decide to finish up,and release the classical music that he had been working on,I know I would love to hear it.

One of my favorite currents artists, Dam Funk said his biggest pet peeve was the whole MJ/Prince comparisons because Prince so much more than Michael and Michael was more of an entertainer who was chasing hits. I love DF and while I think we can all agree Prince is a complete musician, I think for DF to blow Mike off as "just an entertainer" is pretty unfair

yes, Michael was a huge pop star and had many hits BUT at the same time, this wasn't some guy who went into the studio and let the producers do everything and he just recorded what they gave him

and remember when Thriller and Bad came out in the 80s, they were great albums and the biggest hits were ones Michael wrote and composed. Yeah to many people, he was a pop star or just an entertainer, but I think he's much more than that and people should really start digging deep in his complete discography. Michael had songs that you think wouldn't have been radio friendly, huge hits lol

The New Man in Katherine Jackson’s Life is A Gambler

There’s a new man in Katherine Jackson’s world. Or make that, Mann.

Howard Mann is Mrs. Jackson’s new business partner. He tells me bought the assets of Henry Vaccaro out of bankruptcy, including the New Jersey warehouse filled with Jackson family memorabilia.

The warehouse included many personal items from the family including letters and some things that might caused embarrassment had they made it into an auction.

Mann quickly contacted Mrs. Jackson and made a deal with her. He returned personal possessions, and in exchange started to develop projects. The first is Mrs. Jackson’s book of photographs coming this Monday, called “Never Can Say Goodbye.”

Mnn, who is from Toronto, made his money with online gambling. His 121 Gaming company –described as a celebrity driven, erotic content provider–.got so successful that in 2006 he introduced online “nude” gambling. He created a site called GrandNevada.com and told a gaming website: “Online gaming will never be the same. Why would anyone choose to play against a boring online video based game that could be altered to drastically favor the house? Now people can play real casino games in real time, with real live sexy dealers, just like in a real casino, except at GrandNevada.com, the dealers are either wearing bikinis or are topless.”

Mann continued: “We have booked several adult film stars to deal live and in the proverbial flesh.”

Mann also created Carmen Electra’s Naked Women’s Wrestling league. Unfortunately, that ended in tears. And a lawsuit.

Sadly, GrandNevada.com is no more. I always find out about these things too late!

Since then, Mann says he’s gotten out of that business and turned his 121 Ventures into a high end video production and online company. He’s aiming to take the Jackson site, jacksonsecretvault.com, and create a place where music fans can download their favorite tunes and bands– his own version of ITunes.

I've said it before, I think people underestimated Michael's abilities

As I've often stated many times, people think about artists by what they know most of them - to the majority MJ is a song and dance entertainer, Prince is a multi-musician singer. This negates what people don't know about the full spectrum of both artists.

I never saw the need to compare artists. Nor did I ever see the need to pick one over the other. Dong so just robbed you of enjoying great music that both offered.

It will be interesting to see this year's BET awards with Prince being honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and a special honour being bestowed on Michael as well.

So I was reading some comments about Prince getting BET Lifetime Achievement Award this year and was thinking....

Do you guys think that Prince would have gotten this award if Michael hadn't died last year? I know this is a sensitive, shaky subject but I think the general public (non-hardcore Prince fans) started focusing on Prince after Michael's death since he's the only other artist worthy to be a musical rival.

What do you guys think?

hmmm

No, I think Prince would've gotten it regardless. You also have to remember, Prince has been seen in a more positive light than Michael this past decade, especially with Musicology, 3121, Planet Earth, and LotusFlow3r charting well, his TV performances....

Even janet said MJ had issues with prescription drugs, and MJ was very close to her. I think he did have problems with prescription drugs at different points of his life.

Regarding his relationship with his family, I remember how those bodyguard on ABC were talking about how MJ refused to let his brothers into his Las Vegas home, and how Randy crashed the gate, and MJ still didn't see him regardless.

Apparently his family had to have appointments to see him.
