ORG MIXTAPE PROJECT: theAudience - Brain Trust (an experiment in listening) The Theme When I accepted the offer to particiapte in another Mixtape Project, I knew it would based around instrumental music. Although I had the musical concept, I didn't really have a strong overall theme concept yet. Time went by but nothing really came. Then one afternoon while watching a movie I heard a piece of music that sealed the deal. I knew the set would be built around this piece. Why instrumental compositions? To me, well written instrumental music can have the ability to elicit stronger emotional reactions in the listener. Part of the reason being that without a lyric, it's left to your own brain to create a personal story line. The particular arrangement of melody/harmony/rhythm/tempo functioning as non-verbal communication if you will. In a certain way, this point is raised in a conversation between Mia and Vincent in the movie Pulp Fiction... Mia: Don't you hate that? Vincent: What? Mia: Uncomfortable silences. Why do we feel it's necessary to yak about bullshit in order to be comfortable? Vincent: I don't know. That's a good question. Mia: That's when you know you've found somebody special. When you can just shut the fuck up for a minute and comfortably enjoy the silence. ...Some folks get extremely uncomfortable without ongoing verbalization. After silence, that which comes nearest to expressing the inexpressible is music. ~ Aldous Huxley Voices are used in a few pieces. One piece does have lyrics but since they are in a language I don't understand, like the other lyric-less vocals, the voice simply functions as another instrumental sound within the composition. "How can one express the indefinable sensations that one experiences while writing an instrumental composition that has no definite subject? It is a purely lyrical process. It is a musical confession of the soul, which unburdens itself through sounds just as a lyric poet expresses himself through poetry." ~Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky The Experiment Something else that came to me while thinking about this set of music. And that was the negative impact music videos might have in terms of stunting some of the brain's creative ability while listening. Imagine that instead of letting something like a music video associate specific visual images with the music, you let your own brain create them. Hence, the experiment. What would be really interesting to hear from you is not so much whether you liked this or that tune (though you're welcomed to do that), but what images or feelings came to mind when you listened to the tracks. Each track was selected to set a specific mood and for maximum impact, should be listened to (at least initially) in the specific order indicated (Track 1, Track 2, etc). Let the music act as a soundtrack for your own personal mental movie. You'll notice that i've omitted the title and artist info to try and eliminate even those elements from forcing the direction of your listening experience. I'm sure there are a few that will still recognize at least a few of the selections. Later in the week i'll fill in the blanks. I'm hoping that this will be quite an enjoyable and enlightening experience for those that choose to participate. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Enough 'splaining. This is definitely a headphone mix. So strap 'em on, turn up the volume and Let The Music Take Your Mind: http://8tracks.com/theaud...rain-trust Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. Great concept, Krazy-Kool artwork, and you're right--definitely a headphone experience! The vibe is takin me all over the place-- from a desert, where I may or not be seeing a mirage (is this Trilok -related?), to an urban 'Safari' ( S.A.--Modern Times is one of my faves!) Then, back to my childhood--wow, Dick Hyman (who, BTW, has one of the most unintentionally filthy and hilarious names in the biz! )--ah, evening thoughts...I remember as a kid, just staring at the craters on the cover, while the eerie but compelling music floated through the air.... Some new Jeff- gentle, but soaring...this definitely puts a smile on my face..I think, his best since he went There and Back.. . Here's some spacy propulsion with AH chords (is that Wackerman back there?)--- then, a truly out of body expereience (Lux Eterna? well at least, that's what it reminds me of....)... A De Francesco/ Smith type ballad [this reminds me of childhhod also -- with my Dad, at a resaturant called 'Moore's Love and Peace' (Dig it, man! ), where they featured an Organ trio]... Now, a great Pat piece (Way Up?)--followed by Pasqua, who's definitely taking us to that Miles/ Herbie/ Brecker Fusion of the early 70's (childhood again!)--while the last piece brings us squarely into the present-- Too Kool!!!! ... I'm WAY backed up in listening and reviewing the mixtapes, but I really look forward to giving thoughts on this. [Edited 4/19/10 19:26pm] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

Whoa.
I like that you didn't provide a tracklist ahead of time--makes the experience all the more intriguing not knowing what's coming. I'm listening to this one later when I can devote the proper time to it.

I just want to point out to everyone the level of work that tA invested in this mix. Not only did he come up with this awesome succession of tracks, amazing artwork, and intriguing preliminary notes (with more soon to follow, as I understand it)... but the man went so far as to contact the webmaster(s) of 8tracks.com for approval to upload his mix without artist/title notation for the first few days. That sort of thing is expressly against 8tracks.com's policies, but they felt what he is trying to do, appreciated that he respected their rules, and they gave him the OK!
Now, a scoff law like myself would have gone ahead and did the incognito thing... and later took my flogging. But I have to give it to tA for doing things the right way. And the results are great. [Edited 4/21/10 11:23am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

The purpose for leaving those details out was so that the listener wouldn't have any preconceived notions about the track before even listening to it. Unfortunately, many folks have mental barriers up about music they've never even heard before. Happy listening. Thanks. I deal with people/businesses for a living. What i've learned over the years is that if you have the proper approach and respect for what they're doing, when presented with a legitimate request (backed with reasonable justification), the majority will go out of their way to accommodate you. Luckily, this was one of those instances. Music for adventurous listeners tA Tribal Records "Ya see, we're not interested in what you know...but what you are willing to learn. C'mon y'all."

BTW, tA--How'd you do that Kool gif? ... I found the basic graphics online. The text was added with Microsoft Paint (comes with the OS) using some free fonts I found online. Couldn't decide on which of the 3 variations to use (I made 4 different ones). Hunted around the internet and found a free animated GIF program and just loaded the 3 variations. That was what was used to make the finished product. (Can't remember the name but i'll send it to you once I get home). While watching what I thought was the finished product, it just seemed to need another element. I decided to grey scale the images and have that image preceed the actual color image. I haven't listened to all of it yet. Track One was what I needed to hear first because it made me stop doing what I was doing and just BREATH. When I'm running on full steam, I tend to forget, how to do that sometimes. So thanks!
I'll finish the rest as the moments that I'm supposed to...hit me. I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I love how this mix ends, the last song is really great--like Miles on Extacy. I kind of like the idea of not knowing what I'm hearing so there are no preconceived notions.
But I'd like to know what this stuff is eventually! Sorry I had to completely break the rules & listen on tiny computer speakers, but it's good even like that My Legacy
