ORG MIXTAPE PROJECT: Paligap : " Night Flyer"

...

Night Flyer

http://8tracks.com/paligap2/night-flyer

I imagined this as the subconscious soundtrack for someone dozing during a night flight trip home, sort of a sequel to the "Slipstream" mix I made for the first Org mixtape go round, back in 2008. ( I gotta stop sleeping so much!).. Anyway, as the plane leaves the ground, I pictured the person gradually easing into that dream state, with his own internal ethereal dream radio shifting in and out of songs and moods...

Fly To Me Now - Flying Pop's . In addition to his music, keyboardist and guitarist Cyril Polacsek is also an acoustic engineer in aeronautics, which explains the inspiration for his aural creations. So far, Cyril has made three albums that combine Trip-hop, House, and Electro Jazz, and Fly To Me Now is from his 2005 album of the same name.

Clouds to the Ground - Chester Gregory, featuring J Most. Chester is a a singer and Broadway performer. On this piece, he collaborates with guitarist J Most, who also wrote, arranged and produced. I originally heard J Most's dreamy compositions on MySpace, and I featured another one of his tunes on the earlier ‘Slipstream’ mix.

Recover Gracefully - Marc Anthony Thompson. Marc Anthony Thompson, also known under the persona, Chocolate Genius), has been putting out sporadic but critically acclaimed albums under both names. This hypnotic piece is from his 1984 debut, "Marc Anthony Thompson".

Soon - Jazzanova featuring Vikter Duplaix (Jazzy Jeff mix). Berlin, Germany’s Jazzanova have been putting out funky Jazz influenced Electronica for more than a decade now, with contributions from Electric Funk/ Downtempo artists and groups like 4Hero, Clara Hill, Victor Davies, Koop, and Kyoto Jazz Massive. Here, DJ Jazzy Jeff adds his funky re-interpretation of their piece, while Nu-soul artist Vikter Duplaix lends his dream-state vocals to the proceedings.

Casualties of Honey - Silhouette Brown. Silhouette Brown is a group formed by 4Hero co-founder Dego, along with Bembe Segue, UK keyboard whiz Kaidi Tatham, and vocalist Lady Alma - this piece is from their second album, "Two".

Out of Control - Aja West & Friends featuring Reggie Watts. Producer Aja West populated his albums with such Jazz and Funk luminaries as Mike Clark and Paul Jackson (Headhunters) and P-Funk/James Brown alumni Fred Wesley, and Maceo Parker. Vocalist Reggie Watts of Soulive fame drops by to add his unique vocal talent.

Knowingness - Leon King. This track by UK Newcomer Leon King is from a Kool little EP called "Digital Church', which showcases his funky, spacy electronics, guitar and vocals.

I Don't Care - Rasmus Faber, featuring Parasto. Keyboardist and producer Rasmus Faber has been producing on the House/Dance Music circuit for awhile now, but with the ambitious style of this tune, it seems that he’s definitely intent on expanding those boundaries. I do think it's kinda weird that such a lush mix is accompanied by such goofy lyrics, but maybe that's the point about being in love...I dunno...it's a dream, so....

Believe Me - Liquid Spirits
The Dutch group Liquid Spirits is an eight strong collective that includes Wiboud Burkens (keyboards and synths), Mark Bien (guitar), Manuel Hugas (bass) and Cyril Directie (drums) along with several guest vocalists. They have two albums out on the European ‘Kindred Spirits label, and this is track is from their 2006 debut...

Masters At Work, featuring Vikter Duplaix - The Real World (Osunlade Mix) - As he reaches his destination, our hero starts to come out of a deep sleep, realizing it's time to get "back to business".

Masters at Work is the group name for DJs and beatmeisters Kenny Dope and 'Lil' Louie Vega, of Nuyorican Soul and countless other Hip/Hop/Dance/Funk projects. St Louis, Missouri Yoruba musician and producer Osunlade contributes this version of the tune, with Vikter Duplaix’s vocals again gliding over the mix....

Great set Gap-Man!
It never fails to amaze how close our musical tastes are in many respects.
I didn't want to wait until I got home so I listened at work (under less than ideal conditions) but the set still worked.

All the tracks are great but it was Fly To Me Now & Clouds To The Ground that stood out for me.
As a matter of fact, if the 8tracks site would've allowed it, I might not have gotten past the first two tunes. smile

Way to go bro...highfive

Fly to Me Now - Love the sound of this but it's a little repetetive lol More effective shorter I think. Still love it though. I'll probably love all your songs lol

Clouds to the Ground - Under the same sun every day. That shift is BRILLIANT! worship clapping OH YES! biggrin This song is incredible.

Recover Gracefully - Beautiful harmony and layers on the vocal. Feel brilliant and shining. sun

Soon Love the Underwater feel of this clapping Just love the ongoing groove. Fabulous. Love Jazzanova.

Casualties of Honey Imagining hearing this in a club with giant speakers clapping

Knowingness "The Digital Church" faint That Name! clapping I had slim hopes when this first started but it fleshed out so nicely! mushy

I Don't Mind Didn't expect an instrumental on here. Nice. Wait, finally there is singing. Nevermind lol What a beautiful Voice. I totally love the way this ends!

Believe Me For some reason this song seemed super short. Like right when I was getting into it, It ended mad OK, listened again and it's not so short. Went through a wormhole on that one lol Liquid, it feels that way nod

The Real WorldIs this the same Masters at Work that worked with India? If so, interesting to hear them as an autonomous entity. I only know of them from their work with India, which I absolutely loved.

Ok, how crazy. The next mix that came on after yours ended began with Masters At Work Featuring India and I was totally going to ask if the Masters at Work from your mix was the same that worked with India! eek 8 tracks must be programed to recognize similarities or it could be my magical powers lol

Here's that mix:

biggrin

I had to listen to this over 3 days lol Hate that you can't rewind on 8 tracks. As usual, the music industry forces itself on a great concept of a site and ruins things. Sickening mad Even worse, after first listen it mixes the track order! shake What and why? What is the purpose of all that mess? How does that serve the artist, the industry, the site or the users? The music license dictates all this. Just sickening. Let me stop before I go off lol

Have you ever check out Naked Music? They had some excellent releases. Reminds me of this music. Where are you searching for this stuff? Is there a specific genre or do you just know where to look? I love your musical sensibilities. I think I preferred your original mix but I like that you related to this as the B-Side experience. Fantastic work buddy! clapping smile

biggrin Wow, thanks so much, Supa! and thanks for the Link!

I hadn't heard of Naked Music, Thanks I need to investigate!

...shoot, actually that's what I usually do, no one specific genre, I'm always searching for suggestions from y'all on the org, and searching for stuff all over - artist's music sites, Youtube, MySpace, GiantStep music, Sonar Kollektiv, Dance Tracks Digital,etc...I have noticed that I've been attracted to music by people that straddle genres, and kinda embrace the past and the present...and I've noticed that a lot of current artists in the electronica/downtempo/chill/nu-jazz area have been influenced by so many of my favorite artists and arrangers, like Charles Stepney and Rotary Connection, The Mizzell Brothers, Free Design, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, Miles, and by a lot of the Jazz-Rock and Jazz-Funk and Soul/Pop, Prog, World Music and even Classical Fusion that was happening in the late 60's, 70's and the early 80's...before things got so segmented...I'm paraphrasing, but I remember reading a Lewis Taylor interview and he said something like, he saw no problem with somone going into a record store and coming out with Marvin Gaye, Kiss, Miles, Todd Rundgren, and The Sound of Music soundtrack under their arm at the same time. And that's definitely what I'm looking for....the kind of artists influenced by the greats of the past, but also holding artists like Radiohead, D'angelo, Bjork and Meshell Ndegeocello in high regard....

Fly to Me Now - I can definitely feel that dream state. Love the guitar in here. Kinda Prince-esque in a way. I'm almost expecting to hear his vocals come through.

Clouds to the Ground - this was a nice transition. I'd like to hear more from this artist. smile

Recover Gracefully - love the chorus of vocals. Inspiring & uplifting! I love it!

Soon - This is funkay! dancing jig I definitely am diggin this! Lovin the lyrics too. "there's so much to explore, I desire much more..." I agree!

Casualties of Honey - beautiful vocals & enjoying the piano. The way the tempo speeds up at the end is really interesting & unexpected.

Out Of Control - Very jazzy. Love the horns & falsetto. cool

Knowingness - Oh yes! YES! Smooth, funky & almost gritty. The clapping is a lovely touch & the whisper of "I know that you want me" makes me feel this song even more. It's got a good flow to it. That whole spotting a soft supple honey from across the room feel. sexy

I Don't Mind - Very dream like. I feel like I'm soaring with the birds & dodging the clouds in the beginning. Towards the middle, you can almost feel the speed increase as if you are viewing the world from above. This definitely gives me an aerial feel. Lovely breathy vocals. This song makes me feel free. dove

Believe Me - I like the beat and the languidness of this. So fluid. It's got me snapping my fingers & swaying. Yeah, it grabbed me. biggrin You can feel like a slow descension (is that a word?) from where we were just a minute ago.

The Real World - Perfect title for the end of the mix. Lyrics are so fitting. No more dreaming. Even the music has the busy pushing feeling. Not allowing you to go back, but move forward & be hasty. Although there's the off-beat that you can almost feel like you're pushing against the pull. Different things going on here, but it works. thumbs up!

I admit, most of these artists I've never heard of so thank-you for these cool vibes & new ear candy! smile This mix painted a lot of visuals for me. Thanks for the ride. biggrin
