Your list was total record sales, mine is just albums, but yes, our sources r similar. nod

Madonna and MJ fans agree on the list, at least. nod

What's funny about it? Britney has sold the same, if not more albums than Janet worldwide.

Janet has always been local, so her sales r significanly lower than other female icons. It is what it is.

I'm gagging at the inflated numbers and Janet has sold about 130 million worldwide.

The numbers r not inflated. Those r singles + album sales, not just albums. Madonna has sold a shit load of singles, as had Whitney Houston.

And Janet at 130 what? Records?

70 mil albums + 40 mil singles sounds right...

Janet has always been very local. Her success overseas has always been limited. Where did she sell 60 million singles?

Yea, records.

She has sold between 80-85 million albums and 50 million singles.

Ask VC. I'm sure he would agree.

Actually- I think the numbers r bloated, sorry... they're all too high. If u reduce Madonna, Celine, Whitney, and Mariah by like 25k, its about right.

As for Janet- as i said, many of her albums didn't even CHART in most countries! The only countries she had consistent success in are:

1. US
2. Australia
3. Japan

Thats just not enough! She would need European support to get big numbers like that! She may have sold 75 million, but i need to know where an extra 10 million came from, when most of her sales r from the US...

Well even if she sold that amount she is still behind the other 5. I am a Janet fan and not a Britney one but their totals should be similar if we keep in mind that Janet's successful years were basically 1986-2001 in the USA but she was a major singles artist only from 1993 onwards internationally and internationally speaking her album sales decreased after 'Janet'. Britney on the other hand is constantly successful USA & internationally for 11 years now as both an album & singles artist, Janet released 4 very successful studio albums and one so-so (All For You), Britney released also 4 very successful studio albums and 2 so-so (In The Zone, Blackout), So yes, sad to see but their figures should be similar

Sorry, I'm giving you facts hun. You can continue to downplay her success but
Janet has sold between 80-85 million albums + 50 million singles = 130-135 million records.

That's all.

Control- 11 mil / Baby One More Time- 25 mil
Rhythm Nation- 12 mil/ Oops! I Did It Again- 19 mil
janet.- 14 mil / Britney- 10 mil
The Velvet Rope- 9 mil / In the Zone- 7.5 mil
Design of A Decade- 9 mil / My Porogative- 6 mil
All For You- 7.5 mil / Blackout- 2 mil
Damita Jo- 2.5 mil / Circus- 3.2 mil

The sheer magnitude of success Britney experienced with her 1st 2 albums is the deal breaker. Yes, she's top heavy, but sales r sales. Remeber Janet wanted to play MJ, takin a fuckin 4 year break between every album. Well, this is what happens. A little girl can come and put out 6 albums in 10 years and outsell u. Look how Britney Spears shot right ahead of her idol Janet.

WHY would i try to do somethin like that?

Because of Mariah? Madonna? MJ? Madonna and MJ r so far ahead, u can add 40 milllion to Janet's total and she still won't ever catch up. A lot of the sales i give Janet r even considered BLOATED by other chart experts, but i give them to her, because i know she is very undercertified, and her sales were very big in America for many years. I don't add or subtract to anybody's total, i try to stay close to reality- like- NOT saying the "janet." album sold 20 million copies.

I think part of sleepyq's point is that Janet's never really been that big of a presence globally in comparison to her competitors. Outside of the U.S., Japan, and Australia she's basically had very limited success. I don't think she's ever had a #1 in the U.K.

80 million is not that much considering when she debuted and the climate of the industry during the time. Eminem and Britney are both in that range and have probably already eclipsed her.

There will NEVER be another MJ, Madonna, Prince.

Or Janet, George, Tina, or Whitney for that matter. Though Beyonce steals from all of them and wants to BE all of them. Mariah too.

But in terms of prestige, cultural 'relevance,' commercial success, Grammys, etc Beyonce dwarfs all of them in today's climate.

In the long run, though, she is not the icon that MJ or Madonna were/are.

She does not have a strong enough personality and I don't think she packs stadiums on every continent.

Also, save "Irreplaceable," "Single Ladies" & "Crazy in Love," her hits don't pack the staying power punch that will make them Immaculate Collection-ish in 25 years. IMO.

You definitely have a point there. Beyonce has tour North America, South American, & Europe. But I have no idea if she ever toured Asia OR Oceania.

Does anyone know?

I don't know VA. The girls of Vanity 6 could've done a funk version of THIS^ Beyonce track. Just speed up the tempo of the drums a little bit, added a few synth riffs, and it's good to go!

while I agree that Beyonce is nowhere in Madonna's league in terms of drive, intellect, savvy, etc. (hug Madonna fan), let's not forget when comparing their work that Madonna made her bones on disposable lightweight fare aimed at 12-14 year olds (Holiday, Lucky Star, Like A Virgin, Material Girl, Into The Groove, etc.).

While this is true can anyone compare Madonna and Beyonce's 10 first years and find Beyonce better or even on par with Madonna? I don't think so

NO...

Beyoncé can SING,... but she needs a REAL BAND behind her. Then, and THEN only can she grace the level of where Madonna is.

I don't see that happen... so NO.

smile just my 2cents...

BTW I'm not a big fan of those 2... I do like some 80's Madonna, (LIKE everyone!) and some (less) of Beyoncé.

She doesn't need to be on Madonna's level. Madonna needs to bow out gracefully and accept the fact that she's old.

The music is WEAK overall.

Britney Spears has better music than Beyonce. Beyonce makes albums to sell records. Her album tracks are embarassing. Its all singles + filler tracks.

Madonna's current music is not good to me. But her old music is timeless.

Talent, fame, and success aside, we need to look at the music. Madonna's music > Beyonce's music. That's where it ends.

Exactly. Singing alone, no matter how good a singer the person is, ain't worth a damn without some good music behind it.
