Am I the only one that hates Neo Soul?

I can't stand the sound of Jill Scott, Angie Stone,Diangilo and Musique Soul Child. Forgive the spelling please. I just think all of their songs are boring!

Understandable, I guess. Before I got into it I guess I always thought the sound was a little abstract and boring. But this was when I thought quality music was Ja Rule and Jagged Edge and whatever everyone else was listening to. I still like some of that stuff, but my tastes have drastically changed over the last 10 years.

What kind of music do you like then? Who are your favorite artists?

I can only find very few Neo Soul song's I like, I agree with you, most seem to lack energy, or at least the type of energy I like in my songs.

Ditto, see I think Prince's music, most of it is abstract, most of the hip-hop I listen to is abstract wich makes for good blunt smoking but neo soul? Yuck!

I'm pretty much with you on this. I got hold of a couple of Jill Scott albums cheap and then picked up some Angie Stone stuff and i was like'where are the songs?', it's admirable trying to keep it real but goddamn where's the spark. I like my soul with a little more sex in it. Van Hunt and Maxwell on the other hand are great artists but they swing towards a funkier side.

I think it's good background 'lounge' music. But yeah--not terribly dynamic.

I get trashed every time I mention my dislike for Neo Soul and some the artists, in this genre. With the exception of Maxwell and Jill's first CD, the rest bore the HELL out of me.

I hate the living hell out of it. And what trips me out, is when I say there's no good real music these days and somebody recommends me one of these artists. I don't give a damn if it is real music, I grew on up bad, hard ass groups like Rick James, The Barkays, Cameo, Con Funk Shun, etc. and people think some weak dull shit like THIS is going to satisfy me. Hell naw! Put a fire under your ass, some pep in your step, and get off your asses and JAM!

Me too.

But to answer this thread's ?uestion; I hate the TERM not the genre,,,there's nothing "neo" about "soul" music, and they certainly didn't put flags on new grounds as much as I dig their style. It screams "been there, done that" to me.

Its only a marketing tactic ploy and dumb ass critics(and some listeners) fell for the bait by thinking its a new type of music.

I loved "neo-soul" when it first came to prominence in the mid-90s. I was a teenager at the time, and it was my first experience with more organic, retro-sounding music, and that in turn inspired me to explore 70s R&B and soul. In the early 00s, I got into funk and became really bored with neo-soul. I prefer much more rhythmic music now, and wish there would be a resurgence of funk like there was for 70s soul. Maxwell is the only neo-soul artist that I'm still seriously into.

I used to like it. But now I just think it's too samey. But I never got that "neo" tag. It's not "neo-soul". It's contemporary R&B.

D'Angelo is head and shoulders above the rest, but there's some other good stuff out there.

Most f those artists have their moments but I haven't heard any of them produce a solid album. If you set up a playlist and you can take from them what you like and put it together, than it's OK. But it's odd that some albums get raving reviews while for me, they hardly bring a wrinkle in the water. It needs more sex and fire, not lube.

I think Neo Soul has to be taken in doses like anything. It has its moments, and it fits certain moods and such. It's not something I'd have on all the time, and I love Jill Scott, India.Arie's first two albums, etc. But I want some "DMSR" or some Motley Crue or some Fagget Fairys or some whatever as well.

At first I thought neo soul was going to be a welcome change but it became formulaic very quickly. There's a handful of artist I still dig like Erykah but for the most part it's not that great these days.

I can't say I love or hate "Neo Soul." I dig individual artists like Maxwell, Jill Scott, Musiq Soulchild, Erykah Badu, and Bilal. All these people happen to belong to what they call "Neo Soul artists." I mean, I don't necessarily search for gems within Neo Soul. It's all about happening to like certain artists for me.

I totally agree. Neo soul is, for the most part, very bland.

The only "neo-soul" artists I could get into were D'Angelo and Erykah Badu (and Maxwell to a lesser degree). I'm not too sure if I consider Ledisi or Chrissette Michelle to be "neo-soul", they sound like they have the tendency to go off the wall (which I like). Jill's cool for a few songs.

Music either sounds good to me it or it sounds bad. There's a lot of R&B, Rock, Pop and Jazz music I thinks sucks too, but I don't hate those genre's. wink

Some of it was good. "Plantation Lullabies" to me was the 1st "neo" joint of the early 90's. "Brown Sugar", "Urban Hang" and Ms. Badu's 1st were like a breath of fresh air after hearing all of the gangsta rap by the mid 90's.

But by 1999-2000 every one tried to jump on the bandwagon and the "soul" got lost. Another one that never gets mentioned is Davina. Her 1st CD was fantastic.
