George Clinton legal fight for his masters

I heard this on the radio yesterday:

link: http://www.contactmusic.c...er_1126958

CLINTON RECEIVES ADVANCE TO BURY LATE MOTHER

Funk icon GEORGE CLINTON will be able to bury his late mother in style after receiving financial help from his new management team.
The legendary musician, 68, has been struggling to find the funds needed to pay for a lavish funeral for his beloved mum, Julious G. Keaton, following her death in North Carolina earlier this month (Dec09).

But Clinton can now breathe a sigh of relief after signing a new deal with bosses at Exclusive Solutions Management (ESM), who have promised to advance him the cash he needs for his mother's send-off.

A statement from ESM reads, "At a time when he should be able to live off his life's work, Clinton is struggling to provide for his family and give his mother a proper burial."

The star, who filed for bankruptcy in 1984, is still struggling to meet his needs after years of mismanagement in the music industry.

Clinton is currently battling his former business partners and managers, Armen Boladian and Nene Montes, over allegations they forged his signature on documents, which signed off all the rights to his back catalogue of hits, including Flashlight, One Nation Under a Groove and Atomic Dog.

But ESM executives have vowed to fight for Clinton so he can regain legal ownership of his archives.

The statement continues, "There were several documents that appear to have George's signature on them, which turns most of his publishing and masters over to Boladian and Montes, which caused Clinton to lose all rights and financial gain to all of his songs.

"Clinton asserts that he would not be so careless as to sign over complete rights to his music for a lifetime."

To be fair, he does look like he's high most of the time, so it's probably very plausable he could've signed those contracts.

he wouldn't have been the first artist to have done so....high or not. A lot of cheating of artists went on in the industry for a long time.

Let me help you write SLAVE on your cheek, George.

Let me help you write SLAVE on your cheek, George.

Clinton says he is not afforded the ability to live off the residual income of his life's work of which he wrote, produced, and created because individuals and record label executives took advantage of him. Clinton wants to make it clear that he has not monetarily benefited at all from the more than 300 infringement lawsuits filed on behalf of the works he created, nor was he the instigator in these suits. At a time when he should be able to live off his life's work, Clinton is struggling to provide for his family and give his mother a proper burial.

Clinton is also fighting back against his former business partners and managers, Armen Boladian (Bridgeport Music, Inc.) and Nene Montes (Tercer Mundo). George knew early on the value of what he was creating and attempted to take steps to protect it by negotiating ownership with the labels (this was rarely done at the time) and worked hard to secure ownership of his masters, which at the time he did.

In 1984 Clinton filed bankruptcy. Armen and Montes were entrusted to act on Clinton's behalf as administrators only. There were several documents that appear to have George's signature on them which turns most of his publishing and masters over to Boladian and Montes, which caused Clinton to lose all rights and financial gain to all of his songs. Clinton asserts being an artist whom worked so hard early on to take care of the business side of his creative works, he would not be so careless as to sign over complete rights to his music for a lifetime. This brings to the forefront the ethical relationship between artist and the third parties whom they entrust to take care of their business.

That is so sad that at his age he can't even afford a fancy funeral for his deceased mum.

I doubt he would purposely sign away ownership of his musical art even if her were dumb as a bag of beans.

This is why it's important for artists to stay in school and to have an extended education that includes business law, marketing and finances. In a business that generates multi millions of dollars, one cannot afford to be ignorant and put all of one's trust in lawyers, managers, accountants and so on because they will rob you right in front of your face.

These 2 fuckers should rot in jail! That's forgery for one, isn't that a felony? They jacked George's royalty checks by doing that! And OMG, his mom died? That's terrible. He has a case.

When I heard this on the radio yesterday, I was shocked. Think of the sampling of his music over the course of the 1990s West Coast rap. To believe that he never got a fair piece of that pie is amazing. He lost out on millions just of of this alone.

Not sad but that's the unfortunate reality about a lot of legendary artists. Read the contracts before you sign 'em.

True, but some of these folks got bamboozled by folks who claim to be in their best interest. WHen you see things like this, you can see why certain artist have such animosity towards the industry.

What I get out of this article tho is that his new representation must feel pretty good about their chances against his old lawyers seeing that they did an advance for his mom's funeral.

I hear what you're saying though cool

I didn't realize that was his mom that recently passed away, I thought it was one of his baby's moms. I should have known by the deep level of sadness he expressed on his MySpace update. And whether or not I actually believe he would have signed over the rights to some of his biggest hits would depend on what kind of deal they offered him for them at the time, and at what stage of his drug dependency he was at. If he was fiending bad enough, I might believe he did consciously sign them over and subsequently regretted it.

Word. Q-Tip never lied. I hope he wins and is paid back retroactively every dime lost and exploited throughout the years. Hopefully these new cats he's running with are good and will look out for him. I heard him on the radio in Atlanta just yesterday promoting his New Year's Eve show at the Rialto. George is still George, crazy and funky as ever. Funk just falling out of his mouth like saliva from a baby. Hopefully he's sobered up and ready to get that new money from performing.

I have said it many times everybody no matter what you do for a living must take a finance class. If you have any sort of intelectual property you have got to know how to protect it and profit from it.

This is the reason I do not P and YOUTUBE situation is wrong.
