Poll: Which of these would u consider the "Greatest Entertainer"?

I just took a brief survey on a site and they wanted to know who was/is the greatest entertainer.

Sammy Davis Jr.
The Beatles
Michael Jackson
James Brown
The Rolling Stones
Madonna

So far, here are their results:

Sammy Davis Jr. 18%
The Beatles 51%
Michael Jackson 42%
James Brown 14%
The Rolling Stones 27%
Madonna 15%

Being that the poll is who is the greatest Entertainer. I'd put Michael Jackson at the top of the list.

If the poll was who's the greatest musician/singer, I'd be struggling between Prince and Stevie Wonder.

If the question is based on selecting someone with a proven set of entertainment skills (more than one), and can show undeniable proof of those skills, then there's one obvious choice for me.

If this is just a popularity contest, then I guess anyone could qualify.

1. Singer

2. Dancer

3. Actor (stage & screen)

4. Impressions

5. Musician

Who has the biggest global fan base?

Michael. cool

Prince shouldn't be on there considering he hasn't had a significant album release since SOTT. Michael was still selling out stadiums after a ten year hiatus.

But Prince was still selling out huge arenas 21 nights in a row in the same city twenty years after SOTT ( his last significant album, in your opinion).

The results don't add up... anyway here is my take on the subject:
1,Madonna (we are ranking them as entertainers, she is obviously the best in that era and she still goes strong)
2.Michael Jackson (great entertainer but he looses points because he stopped entertaining me since 1995-1996. But if this poll was taken at any time till 1995 he would be on top)
3.James Brown (the man both Michael and Prince looked up to and although both surpassed him he still remains one of the best of all times
4.Rolling Stones (no comments needed here)
5.Beatles (the greatest band of all times yes but I never considered them entertainers. Then again I was born way after they splitted up so I might be wrong about this)
6.Sammy Davis Jr (I am not as familiar with his work as I am with the rest so his placing might be wrong)

I see that some of u aren't really familiar with Sammy. I suggest that u really research him. He was the definition of an entertainer. Everything he did, he did it GREAT. I'm not a Sammy historian, but my father was a big fan of Sammy's and introduced me to him and his music.

Sammy broke down a lot of racial barriers here in the states. He performed with the "rat pack" and did sold out Vegas shows. Up until the 70s came along, Sammy was the true entertainment package.

Many of u are saying MJ, but when u look at history, MJ piggy backed on the talents of people like Sammy. MJ made it known that he was influenced by the greats and Sammy was one of them.

Here is MJ performing a tribute to Sammy.

Being that Prince's last 4 albums debuted in the top 3, including his 1st ever debut at #1.

I'd say he's had a significant album release since SOTT

The last big tour he held was the top grossing tour of that year.

He's won 3 Grammys since '04.

A Golden Globe.

His 21 Night stay in London is a record that won't be broken by anybody..

So please, 20+ years ago wasn't the last time Prince was relevant by a long shot.

I agree. So many people here think that Lovesexy or SOTT are his last significant albums, but I don't agree at all. P has continued to release good work over the last 20+ years. Sure, he'll probably never have big hits like he did in the 80s, but nobody that was around in the 80s will either.

The real true test is when people are still talking about your work from the past and saying how good it is. People like Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, James Brown, etc. all fall into that category. They may release new material, but it's only because they want to.

Exactly, It's not like Michael Jackson was gonna do a whole lot of new material on the This is It residency.

Prince is the only artist I know who gets any kind of grief for playing his Classic Material Live.

During the One Nite Alone Tour, people wouldn't stop complaining that he wouldn't play any of his hits.

Since then, people won't stop complaining that he's playing his hits too much.

He can't win with these fools.

I hear more complaints here on the org than I do from "average" P fans I meet. They look forward to hearing "Let's Go Crazy" or "Purple Rain".

True, can't deny this. MJ just threw in his own mix, and it has worked for him.

Well, that's what everyone has done. Everyone has been influenced by entertainers of the past. MJ had elements of Bing Crosby, Sammy, Frank Sinatra, The Nicholas Brothers, Jackie Wilson, and more.

To me, it all comes down to generations. In our generation, MJ, Prince, Madonna, etc. are the greats, but when you are looking at the GREATEST in HISTORY, I don't think any of our generations entertainers compare to those of the past.

The "average" Prince fan doesn't have 1000 bootlegs that they've listened to a million times. Making themselves sick of hearing his hit songs.
