on an album that is thrown into the RnB/Funk genre it is quite heavy imo

but its cool i know what you were trying to say i just felt like pointing out the fact that jak has some skills (and still plays clubs to this day with soul divine)

I gotcha...But would u consider Jak's album r&b? I NEVER considered Prince to be r&b and dawg, everything Jak came with on that album was Controversy/1999 albums thrown together! razz For real mayne. He was like "Well lets see...Prince just put out Purple Rain which is even more rock heavy than he's been fucking with so....I know!...I'll do his 81/82 sound!". wink Come on now mayne! You know Jak was putting the intro to Let's Work along with the chorus from DMSR and shit! I don't see that no where near r&b.

I can dig it...Not only "Get Up Everbody" but "I Go Wild" has some DMSR too. But yeah man, in late 85, and all through the summer of 86, all I was blasting in my ride was MZ, Teena Marie's "Emerald City" and Jak! I'm telling ya, Jak's cut "69", MZ's "I Guess It's All Over" and Teena's "You So Heavy" was the background music for what I call DDT..."Drawers Disappearing Time" in the car with the girls. wink

U know what u should say to ANYBODY that question your likes...Fuck em'! biggrin For real bruh, are they paying your rent and your bills and shit? Nope. So fuck what they think. What did Hendrix say? "I'm the one that's going to die when it's time for me to die. So let me live my life....the way I want to....There...Sing on brother...Play on Drummer."

if you know of any other groups that sound similar to EB let me know

holla!

You ever heard of Sexual Harrassment? They released an album in 1983 which is very Prince-influenced.It sounds like Prince's early 80s funk jams with dirty lyrics and lots of synths.Their album only had six songs, just like the Time albums.5 of those songs are on Youtube (the remaining track,"We Didn't Say It",isn't on Youtube but it's just an instrumental version of "K-I-S-S-I-N-G" anyway).
"I Need A Freak"

"If I Gave You A Party"

"You Are My Sexual Connection"

"K.I.S.S.I.N.G"

"Exercise Your Ass Off"

These guys were unabashed Prince fans.In 1985,they released a 12" single called "We Want Prince" but unfortunately, there was no second album and they faded away.A very mysterious band that no one has ever seen.No videos,no promotion,no TV appearances, nothing! Here in the Bay Area,"I Need A Freak" became a huge hit in the clubs and on R&B radio stations, but I don't even know how well it did elsewhere.

yeah,"I Need A Freak" became somewhat of an Old School classic in certain areas. And yeah, their album has an underground sound. It's like the Minneapolis Sound circa 1982-83,but without all the bells and whistles.Mostly, they stick to drums and layered synths. The best track is "If I Gave You A Party",which is the song that sounds the most like Prince. The lyrics, the fast beat, the eerie synth riff that pops up during the second verse and stays throughout the remainder of the song, the group vocals singing in unison....this is pure Prince! They're stealing all of his tricks,on this song especially.

Hell yeah. I can remember when I first joined the org. I would make an Ebonee Webb thread, it would get two or three replies, and then it would tank to the second page. And now Ebonee Webb has gotten three pages of replies. I think youtube has a lot to do with it. Once people hear them, they either immediately remember them or instantly love them.

That Sam Bostic cat, now he's somebody that I did not check out. I never heard him on the radio and if I did, I wasn't aware of who he was. Which that was hardly never when cats that got airplay, I wasn't aware of who they were. If it was a mimimal hit or not. I remember seeing Bostic's album but I didn't feel moved to get with it. When I saw Jak's album and Exotic Storm, I HAD to get it out of pure curiousity based straight on how they looked. In Sams's case, he looked more like somebody on Michael's tip than anything. Which wasn't a bad thing certainly, BUT to me, NOBODY should have been evoking MJ at THAT time. I was expecting him to be wearing a silver glove and shit on the album cover. He reminded me of Alphonso in the Pepsi New Generation commercial where he's dancing on the sidewalk with his friends before MJ and his brothers walk up on him. razz
