Yeah, besides the P sounding falsetto, the track always reminded me of Cameo's Why Have I Lost You and it also reminds me of Switch.

I have always loved Ebonee Webb since day one and mention them every chance I get. I can't get enough of them.

That's what I just posted! You have always championed this band on here. I had forgotten all about these dudes untill I saw u first talking about them. I was like "Oh yeah...Damn, I remember them!" Although they sounded a little bit TOO much like early Prince, I remember them getting some play out here in L.A. But not a LOT. I think it was because the stations that would play them, specifically 1580 KDAY, played the hell out of Prince, The Time, Vanity 6, etc. So I think the djs out here were like "Well, their laying on the Prince sound a little too thick to NOT be Prince so..." It was like there were soooo many other acts that were dropping hits at that time so the compettion was still kinda thick. Everybody had their own signiture sound. Cameo, Rick, Zapp & Roger, Slave, George Clinton, P had his acts and himself all over the radio,.. all of these cats had their own sound. U knew it was them instantly. So it was hard for bands that were all over somebody else's sound to break through all of that and stand out. So because of that, I think it kinda killed them off out here.

Hey shango, PLEASE don't forget about these two other Prince sounding acts:
The band Exotic Storm and this other dude called Jak.
Exotic Storm, I thought, was wack. They were too busy trying to look like Dez fronting The Revolution. Jak was better but still all his songs were basically 2 Prince songs in one. The whole album was like that. But I dug his album "I Go Wild". I remember seeing him walking in front of The Palace in Hollywood at a Mazarati concert. The 2 people I was with and everybody else there didn't know who he was. I was like "Yeah, that's Jak!" Everybody else was like "Who?!" He had on the same light blue leather suit that he wore on his album cover. Anyway, the track "I Go Wild", although is STRAIGHT up DMSR, is pretty cool. I used to love the hell out of his track "69". It was basically Do Me Baby, but I think I dug it better than P's/Andre's jam. I told a funny but true story on here once about my experience with Epic's Larkin Arnold. That cat was "weird".

Thanx for the heads up and interesting info blackguitaristz ! I actually posted about Exotic Storm on the first topic-page lol Their single, You Better Get With It, is aaiight though imo.
Yeah, Jak's joint is cool. Bought his album again last year on Japanese vinyl with obi pimp2 I've read earlier on the org that minneapolisFunq was hip to Jak, so i skipped that one for my suggestions-list lol.

Some more jams :

http://www.imeem.com/fuze...be-afraid/

Don't U Be Afraid by Slave has some Mpls mixed in there. Sounds also like a Ready For The World track.

http://www.imeem.com/fuze...out-remix/

Julian Flenoy released one single on the indepent KMA label.

Bromar was a group from Minnie. Their synths sound somewhat like the Mpls-sound but imo not like a direct copy from it :

Coming back to this. Was that Maz-gig somewhere around 1986 ? Interesting, because Jak's release was around 1985 and he possibly promoted his album and a few singles from 1985 till somewhere around 1986. So far i've located about 3 singles of Jak, with cool picture-sleeves. Curious too about the Larkin Arnold story lol. I've seen his name appear on quite some releases.

Yeah, the MZ show was in July 86 at the Palace. That's cool about the singles on Jak. I never seen any 45's on the brother. I only saw his album and bought it on sight. I was like "I got to hear what this motherfucker sounds like!" Same reasons I bought Exotic Storm. I was like "Would u look at this feminine version of Dez and the Clones of The Revolution and shit!" Side note...Dez has stated that he actually played and produced on some of the band's material that got them a deal. Go to dezdickerson.com and there is a thread on there about this. Once there, just type in Erotic City, ooops, I mean Exotic Storm and you'll see where Dez himself posted on the thread talking about his connection to the band. I was like "Whaaaat?.. Damn." I never would have thought that shit. My short experience with Epic's Larkin Arnold was a trip. I was going to org message u this shango but I told some of this on here before over a year ago so fuck it. razz This was in late 86 and I was in my teens and this girl I was dating had a cassette of a song I had written and recorded called "Pink Lipstick". Her aunt knew Larkin Arnold and she heard my girl playing the song when she was over their house visiting. She liked it and called Larkin and played the song over the phone and shit. He said that he liked it and wanted me to call him. My girl was all hyped up calling me telling me that I had to call this dude and told me what went down. So that Monday I called his office and went through hella static with the receptionist. U would have thought I was calling the CIA. So finally I said "Lizzie Schillings is a friend of his and he told her to have me call." So finally Larkin came on the phone and was like "Yeah yeah,, I really liked that song Lizzie played for me. But it was really really rock heavy and wild." And I was like "Yes". Then out of the blue, he shifted gears and started asking me shit like "Are you a pretty boy?" The tone of his voice sounded really odd. I was like "Huh?!" "Well you know, what do you look like? Lizze says that you are cute...." Weird vibes shot through my mind, man. I was totally hip that people ask questions about image but it didn't really come across that way. So I tried to play it off and shit and said something like "Well, I have a cool rock image, you know." Then it was like dead silence for a few moments. I thought we had gotten disconnected and then he was totally different. He completely changed up and sounded almost robotic and flat. "Well, I think the song is definately too rock sounding. Way too much rock guitar. Too much solo." That's what he said. "Too much solo". "We like more keyboards and hardly no rock in it." I said "Well the song you heard has keyboards." "Yeah but it's too rock!...Too much solo!" Then I said "Well, that's what I do. I play rock. Funk rock." "Call back when you have less rock!" Click. He shapeshifted on me totally out of the blue after how I responded on the kinda creepy "are u cute" questions. Yeah brah... confused

[Edited 8/23/09 9:35am]

Nah, not at all. My "really really rock heavy and wild" song and my "too much solo" is what got me the shaft. cool Truth is ALL of what he said was in his track record being that the few artists on that label that he was behind, Jak, Exotic Storm, all were heavy synth oriented bands with VERY little rock guitar or rock anything for that matter, in their sound. Larkin specialized in trying to find cats who were biting off of Prince's or Jesse's image but who weren't truly playing guitars. He wanted cats to "pose" with a guitar but not to actually play one. He wanted watered down version's of Prince and Jesse TOTALLY minus of the rock guitar. On what he heard of me, it was the EXACT opposite of that. I was representing Hendrix, rock mode Prince and rock mode Jesse with the Strawberry Lover based Mazarati sound thrown in...along WITH the long haired brutha image that he was SO interested in. But for his tastes, which showed in all the acts he signed, their entire albums, it was all Prince bites with heavy synths. Totally NOT my style, then or now. Like I said, it was all very watered down Prince type stuff. Lacking all of P's edge, bite and orginality. Epic ended up getting rid of Larkin after the artists that he were behind ended up not selling. So....

ok, but that really has nothing to do with why you told the story or how you presented it to begin with shrug

What it has EVERYTHING to do with is me responding to what YOU posted. In my last post, I clarified "WHY" I got the "shaft" as you called it. It had NOTHING to do with (your words) "homophobia".

sorry i have to disagree with the comment you made about jak

he has some decent guitar work on his album. "down on my knees" is a heavy rock number that almost sounds out of place on his album. its more jesse johnsons revue style how the solos are thrown in at the end of synth based tracks but he is a capable guitarist and im sure if he wasnt pressured by the label to do what is popular he would have put together something a bit more heavy

Thanx blackguitaristz for sharing your story and hipping me to that link on Dez' site !
Yeah that's cold how Larkin Arnold handled the situation and not being openminded to funkrock.
I'll try to find some scans of those Jak-singles.

No problem brah. Isn't that a trip that Dez was involved with Erotic City , Ooops damn, my bad. I keep doing that and shit. I mean Exotic Storm? Like I just posted, Larkin got booted out by Epic anyways because the acts he was getting with weren't selling. I, you and a handful of others only bought those albums man. Like I said, nobody at the MZ concert knew who Jak was. And Exotic Storm? The radio, at least out here in L.A NEVER played these cats on the air. For the same reasons I said why Ebonee Webb never got any airplay out here. Jesse got love from the dj's out here and all over the country because one, he was from The Time. Two, his sound was potent enough to call on Prince/The Time without straight hijacking P's shit.

I can dig it. As I stated earlier, I actually liked Jak's album. And yeah, Down On My Knees was cool. BUT to me, it wasn't a heavy rock number. Unless you call a track like "Black Cat" a heavy rock number. I agree withcha about Jak and if he didn't have heat on him from the label, he probably would have went with a much harder rock sound.

Your posts doesn't make ANY sense. That's ALL you can come back with? Some shit from the Price Is Right? First, you make a comment about something that you were dead wrong about. So then I acknowledge that by saying what it WAS. So because you can't come back with anything to that but desperately feels the need to do so, you play The Price Is Right...Damn. Whatever floats your boat, man.
