Anyone remember 1980-1982? What music did you listen to within that time flame? 1980-1982 is that one moment in time when the disco era no longer exist and the dance-pop didn't exist yet (it would later on because of Michael, but that's another thread!).
1980-1982 were the days of New Wave, punk, adult contemporary pop (READ: Air Supply.....I HATED THEM!   ), and The Funk going into a new direction thanks to Rick James (rest in peace), Prince, Teena Marie, Roger & Zapp, Cameo, Dazz Bands, and every other funk band that were willing to use synths to create tracks. And beside, those synthpop artists were already using synths & drum machines a lot (The Human League, Yazoo, Devo,.....anyone?)
1980-1982 were the days when country had another shot at crossover Top 40 pop success (The Oak Ridge Boys,....anyone?). 1980-1982 were the days when Christopher Cross damn nearly became The King Of Pops.  But thank goodness that Michael help put a stop to that!

i was still a kid during those years, and i hadn't really started to appreciate music on my own yet. i pretty much just listened to whatever was on local top 40 radio at the time, and i listened to my mom's record collection. i DO remember getting excited every friday night to watch midnight special and don kirschner's rock show on TV. | |

my sister had a shaun cassidy album ... yeah it was my sisters ... yeah honestly ... it was ...
i remember goin thru a blue oyster cult phase ... would that have been the "dont fear the reaper" era ? a bunch of my friends were into that iron maiden and krokus altho i never had an album by them ... DEVIL WORSHIPPERS ALL OF THEM @!!! Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet. | |

Dazz Band - Let It Whip The Time - Cool The Time - Wild and Loose The Time - Get It Up The Time - The Walk Prince - "Count Your Blessings" (which I later learned was "Controversy")
Prince - "Do Me, Baby" Prince - Let's Work EWF - The Raise album got played by me...a lot! Rick James - Street Songs (It was one of the last 8-track tapes I remember getting) Roger - The Many Faces of Roger (This was the 2nd cassette I ever got) George Benson - Give Me THe Night (my first cassette) Donna Summer's ST album The Jacksons - Triumph (I didn't have the album, only the singles.) MJ - Off The Wall Diana Ross' - Diana (I LOVE THIS ALBUM EVEN TODAY) Prince - 1999 (my first official P album) Teena Marie - Square Biz Jones Girls - At Peace With Woman (Still one of my favorite albums of all time). I actually ALMOST got to see them here locally - but i didnt get to go that night (think i got sick or something) ... they used to tour alot still - will have to look them up to see where they are /goin etc... You guys are too cool for me. I was 11-12 years old during that time and I remember having the 7"s of Juice Newton's "Queen Of Hearts" and Olivia Newton-John's "Magic". I think I had the Thriller album by the end of 1982.

Those shows were still important because not every cable TV customer had MTV yet. In New Orleans, we didn't get MTV until 1983. where i grew up, we didn't get MTV until around 85...i know it was well after the purple rain premiere, because i didn't get to watch it when it happened. 
so i agree, those shows were important to people in the boonies like you and me! heck, it was on those shows that i saw and heard prince for the first time ever, when they aired his promo clip for "i wanna be your lover" waaay back in the old timey days. | |

Man,...do I remember it?! Hell yeah and with much joy. What did I NOT listen to? Man, I listened to literally everything that was funk, rock, new wave, pop, reggae. I listened to jazz fusion as well. During this period, I was in my pre teens and barely in my teens so I listened to everything from the 70's all through the 80's. I had many faves in 80 -82 that were in all of these different genres but it was very little that I didn't listen to and that I wasn't up on. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. I was 6-8 around this time,so most likely whatever my Mom was listening to. I did'nt really start getting my own musical taste until probably 1984.

THo later I do remember going on a road trip from California to Louisiana with the padres and my mom had "Faith" on repeat in the ...get this, "Mini-Van"...lol. No cd player even. JUst the tape looping over and over and over and over.....I HATE GEORGE MICHAEL!!!!! | |

I was born in 79 so 80,81,82 I don't rememeber at all, but 83 is when I rememeber hearing the Thiller album and seeing the video for Beat It and being amazed at MJ. | |

I turned 6 in 1983, but I distinctly remember at our house listening to... what.... Donna Summer? Air Supply? The Bee Gees? Kenny Rogers? Olivia Newton-John? Leo Sayer? And lots of oldies.
Then, of course, 1983 came along and saved me with MJ, Madonna and Prince. Madonna and Prince, of course, were quickly stricken from the playlist some time in 1984 when my mom figured out what they were about, but we still saw the videos at the babysitter's house. Somehow a weird mish-mash of Whitney Houston, Elton John, Cher and Pauala Abdul took their place and it wasn't until 1991 or so that I reintroduced myself to P & M (and MJ and Janet and George Michael) when I was old enough to get an "F U" attitude, developed my own personality, and learned to hide the the things I was into - not just music [Edited 7/30/09 12:43pm] | |
