I was in high school at the time, and for me, this was an exciting time in Music--Funk hadn't died off, in fact it was going in new directions, but at the same time, pop was blending with New Wave-- and stuff was cross-polinating-- I noticed that more black bands were getting featured on pop stations, and more pop was being heard on R&B stations... The Police were groovin, Prince was catching fire now, Rick James was a hit on both R&B and Pop radio, Miles Davis had come out of seclusion, and MJ was on his way to becoming an icon....

Computers were being used, but they hadn't taken over the music yet, like they would in the late eighties--live instruments were still being used, lol

The thing I liked most -- and it seems weird when contrasted with today's climate --is that you could still hear a wide variety of music on the radio! Ah, well....it was good while it lasted....

Yeah,I had a crush on her,too razz She's really charming in her films.

'Xanadu' is an interesting movie. It's like a long-form music video, before the "video revolution" even began. It inspired alot of those extravagant music videos that came later.

Wynd Chymes (check their debut-album, "Arrival", from 1982 on RCA, produced by Anthony Lockett of Cameo)
Zoom (cool band with 2 albums on MCA around 1981 and 1983)
Sheree Brown (female composer/guitarist who worked frequently with Patrice Rushen. Her mellowjam "It's A Pleasure" from her debut-album in 1981 on Capitol is popular in the UK)
Sonny Charles (one album i know he released in 1982)
Gene Van Buren (solid grooves and slowjams released on his album "What's Your Pleasure" at Gordy. A later to-be-released second album from 1984 kept in the vaults)
Mystic Merlin (Freddie Jackson was leadsinger of this band around 1982, on the album "Full Moon", which has been reissued a few years back)
Madagascar (former Prince-singer Marva King was part of this band, together with bandleader John Barnes, saxophonist Gerald Albright, trumpet-player Ray Brown who became part of EW&F around 1987, guitarist Donald Griffin (brother of Billy Griffin), and right now i can't recall the drummer's name lol)
Valentine Brothers (released the original version of "Money's Too Tight To Mention",Billy Valentine worked much together with Bryan Loren on projects such as Vesta Wiliams' debut-album, Con Funk Shun's "Burnin' Love" album, and more stuff. The V-brothers released about 4 albums)
Dunn&Bruce Street (keyboard-player Dunn Pearson,Jr. did some own productions/releases around the 70's and worked much with Mtume. The Dunn & Bruce Street album has some excellent jams. The popular club track on there is "Shout For Joy".
Another album worth to check on which Dunn & Bruce Street appeared is "Street Themes" (1983) by Charles Earland)

Flakes (2 albums out. First one on Magic Disc Records, second one on Salsoul. Tracks i remember : "Flakes Rap"/"Sugar Frosted Lover"/"Take It To The Max")
Randy Brown (still wanna dig deeper into his catalogue. Released some albums on Chocolate City/Casablanca)
McCrays (released a handful of albums. Popular in the UK is "Love On A Summer's Night" from 1982)
Omni (funk/gospel/soul-group. 3 albums i know of which they released : "Omni Says It All" and "All For The One" both on Fountain Records, and iirc, their third album is selftitled (labelname skips my mind right now), but it included again the track "All For the One")
Tomorrws Edition (got to re-check their album too, which i think is reissued recently. After that album there was one more single released around 1984 on the independent Mell-O label, and titled "I'm The Best" which imo is a slammin' club-classic)
Rhyze (I dig one specific fast track on the b-side of their album from around 1982, with on the frontsleeve the lady in the water. Track is called "Everybody's Having Fun" ?... i'm at loss here lol)
Revelation (Arnold McCuller who has been a steady backgroundsinger for James Taylor in recent decades, was part of Revelation around the early albums. One of my fave tracks by them is "I Don't Want You Anymore", which they released twice. These productions came out on the label Handshake)
Karin Jones (another labelmate on Handshake. The original vinyl of her album "Under The influence Of Love" is still much in demand. The albumtitle is a spicy groove, and i think the single-mix of it is less stronger. Great album overall worth to check)
Zingara (released only one album on Wheels Records and it's a great production by Lamont Dozier. James Ingram was part of this group)
T.T.F (Today, Tomorrow, Forever. 2 brothers of the Broomfield family were part of this group including Ronald Broomfield a.k.a. Eugene Wilde lol. 3 albums came out : 1 - selftitled (RSO ) / 2 - Ain't No Doubt About It (RSO) / 3 - Surprise, Surprise (Goldcoast/Capitol-EMI). The last 2 albums came out with the same frontsleeve but with different tracks on each, and those 2 albums have been recently reissued)
Rockie Robbins (a singer from Minneapolis with a fine collection of 80's-soul albums out. All recommendable. They're sho bad)
Harry Ray (was part of Ray, Goodman & Brown. Released an album on Sugar Hill)
Robert Winters&Fall (released 2 excellent albums. at this moment i can recall the track "Lock It Up")
Beau Williams (Beau once auditioned for The Temptations, but unfortunately didn't get the job. about 4 albums i know he released on Capitol. His last album included the clubjam "All Because Of You")
Barry&Glodean (Barry White and his long-nailed wifey lol. Still wanna check their collaborations. Their son inherited Barry's voice well. He represents himself with work online)
Ullanda McCoullgh (my fave album of her includes the track "Men Kiss & Tell")
Marc Sadane (released 2 Mtume-produced albums, incuding "Baby Won't Cha" , "One Way Love Affair", and much more)
Charles Veal (violin-player/conductor with a few soulful/jazzy albums out)
Light Of The World (great funksoul-group from the UK, who builded their legacy over there. Tight bassplayer/singer Paul "Tubbs" Williams left the world too soon)
Ren Woods (actrice (Car Wash/Beauty & The Beast/etc) who released 2 albums, and recorded also a Prince-song)
Wanda Walden (sister or wife (i forgot) from Narada Michael Walden. Released one album around 1981 on Elektra. An extended mix of one particular albumtrack is popular by collectors)
Billy Griffin (former Miracles-singer with great albums released on CBS. "Hold Me Tighter In The Rain" is known by a majority of listeners. On that same "Be With Me"-album, i also dig the moody song "Understand")
Dayton (a top 5 band of mine. I don't even know where to begin with recommending tracks. Most of their albums are solid. Their last LP had imo some "hit and miss" moments)
Heaven&Earth (heard only one album by them, including the cool groove "I Really Love You" on the WMOT label)
Brandi Wells (female singer with 2 albums out. I think that her second album, titled "20th Century Fox" (1985/Omni-Atlantic) is maybe a little less known. It includes an appearance of Bryan Loren)
Noel Pointer (almost same info as Charles Veal, but Noel's catalogue is more expanded)

then when i got a little older i got too kool for skool and sold that album at a garage sale...then i think i rediscovered it in college and decided i didn't give a damn who thought it was uncool, i just love that album. nod

Wynd Chymes was one of our local groups here in Jackson. Larry Graham played with them on this one.....

Another one of our local groups was Freedom which got national attention with "Get Up And Dance". Here's another funky one from them.....

Zoom (cool band with 2 albums on MCA around 1981 and 1983)

Hell yeah! That's some forgotten funk right there.....

Mystic Merlin (Freddie Jackson was leadsinger of this band around 1982, on the album "Full Moon", which has been reissued a few years back)

And the weak sounding stuff that Freddie made as a solo artist is a damn shame especially considering that he came from a group that sounded funky like this.....
