It's interesting to note that,'Thriller' had seven hit singles but only three music videos. He could have made a video for every single but chose not to.Perhaps he wanted the music to stand on its own?

I was thinkin about this before. Love alot of MJ's video's but the song by itself... meh. I mean Thriller great video, ok song. The same with Beat It.

"Thriller" is not a favorite of mine, but "Beat It" is a brilliant song.

Love the guitar solo though
Some people think I'm kinda cute
But that don't compute when it comes 2 Y-O-U.

Well that's your opinion, i never listen to his stuff and associate the song with the videos. Do i think about Iman while listening to Remember The Time? do i hell.

The music stands on it's own. wink

His music video's are great, but I would still think he was great and love him just as much without them. Michael came from a time and started in the music business when you HAD TO HAVE TALENT to make it, period! There was no MTV or anything when MJ was starting out. It's because of his talent that he made it in the first place.

His music and performances all the way from the Jackson 5 days when the music video wasn't even around or it wasn't a force like it became in the 80's, to later on, still holds . I love all his albums for the record. I can find brilliance in every album of his. He's never dissapointed me musically. I don't even watch his music video's that much to be honest. I do however watch his performances and listen to his music all the time though. Music video's or not, I still think he's amazing and I would still be a huge fan regardless.

THANK. YOU!...Gray done bumped his head again, disbelief

Mike made excellent music with his brothers and solo long before he did any videos.

I'd rank him pretty high without the videos. I mean, until he died, I hadn't SEEN an MJ video since his last one, "You Rock My World" once in 2001, and before that, probably once when I happened to catch "Ghosts" or "Blood On The Dance Floor" in 1997, yet I'd still get on a kick and listen to him a lot every couple years. I've never really cared too much about videos.

Yeah I find myself listening to the music more than watching the videos. The videos have actually become secondary when it comes to MJ and that's saying a lot considering how this man DEFINED music videos.

Yeah, like "Blame It on the Boogie", "Don't Stop" and "Rock With You". lol

Also, music videos were usually to promote the song. MJ decided to make it "mini-films". nod

Where would I rank him?... pretty high, even without the vids.

Like a lotta people, I love blasting his tunes in the car - I'd be in trouble if I was playing music videos while I was driving... lol

Also, I remember buying "THRILLER" back in 1983 - the only single that had dropped was "The Girl Is Mine" - no video.

By the time the "THRILLER" mini-film came out, the album was already the biggest selling album ever, the mini-film pushed it even further.

I bought "BAD" before any music videos had dropped, and so on with each album after that.

MJ's music will stand the test of time, "Don't Stop...", Rock WIth You", "Billie Jean" will be played long after we're all gone from this Earth, music videos or not.

Mid-level star. Nowhere on the Thriller level.

His voice is great. His music is catchy. But it's "sing along" music.
MJ is a media star--not an artist whose music is to be studied.

Depends on how you feel about the music. It's subjective. I was more into music than his videos, and still am. That maybe why I have a relatively limited number of Michael Jackson tracks, But I enjoy the songs I have as songs, not as videos.

Yes I know there are videos to Rock With You & Don't Stop, but they are not what carried the album. It's the quality of the music.

Very good point.'Off The Wall' is an amazing album that wasn't really propelled by its videos. The music stands on its own.

A song like Liberian Girl stands on its own. I don't even think about it's video. The song and video have absolutely NOTHING to do with one another.

I agree. That video is HORRIBLE.Why waste a beautiful song on a silly video that features a bunch of his celeb pals? confuse This is one thing that has always irritated me about Michael. He always had this need to "show off" his celebrity pals,as if to say "Look who I got in MY video!",lol.

I think the video is quite clever, actually. I could certainly imagine all of his celebrity pals begging him to be in a video; he killed like 53 birds with one stone! lol

The concept is clever, but not with that song lol "Liberian Girl" is a gorgeous song.....a perfect love song that he could have filmed in Africa. He should have done the celebrity-fest with another song.

Well think of it this way - people are going out to buy his music right now - not his DVDs of music videos. It's the music first and foremost people are connecting to.

For me I always hear the music - rarely do I see the video when I listen to it.
It's the beats, the layering of sounds, the backing vocals, the turn of phrase of the lyric.

Funny you say that because I've read about his music being studied in music theory classes. His work is also used as examples in music production classes

I know teachers who used Don't Stop Til You Get Enough, Billie Jean, and other songs talked about in music classes.

and R&B and hip hop producers always go back to his music and try to understand the production and his approach...so yeah, his music can be studied
