Was ELVIS racist? This post isnt to start anything but I watched a documentary on Elvis last weekend on VH1 Classics and it brought up a comment that my grandmother said that Elvis made. My granny said that Elvis said that all a black man could do for him is shine his shoes. Is that true? Did he say that? I find that hard to beleive since Elvis was so OBVIOUSLY influenced by black artists of his time....feedback plz..

If you listen to the black artist from his era that all praise him for opening doors for them to get into bigger clubs and he was always trying to help them.

Yes.....ask the people who were there. Of course when u stick a mic and camera in front of someone's face they are going 2 be politically correct. Why risk career suicide 2 say he was? The TRUTH.......only exist in 1 form.

Not in the 1950s. There was no such thing as PC. Is he had said what he thought or it was revealed, where would the "career suicide" have happened? If politicians then could get away w/ blantantly racist shit why should Elvis be the exception? [Edited 7/8/09 8:31am]

i say he was. conversations with older relatives who heard the aforementioned quote about what a black man could do for him... was enough for me. not to mention his stealing an artform and style and BILKING it without (or rarely) acknowledging where he stole from

Im going to try to find that Ebony article.. I'm not being QUICK about it thanks. I've given it long thought. If you're willing to take a song literally then that's on you, but let's not pretend that rap lyrics by and large are intelligent. They aren't. In this case, PE kept a rumor going against someone who couldn't defend themselves. Keep in mind, PE had that idiot Flav in the mix. If someone had mentioned BDP, I'd have been a little kinder. This was the 50s-if Elvis was racist, his attitude would have been the norm. That said, I always thought there was a hint of the ol tar brush, as the old folks used to say, in Elvis' family tree. Ol Boy did not look all white to me.

It was rumored by the tabloids that Elvis made the controversial statement in Miami, Florida. The only problem with that rumor is the fact that Elvis was NEVER in Miami on the exact date & time when he suppose to have made those comments. In other words, it was both a bad rumor and a lie. But to answer your question, Elvis was never a racist recording artist at all. However, some Elvis-fans were racists (READ: rednecks).....but that's another thread in P&R. So true. It was rumored that Elvis used to say that black people couldn't do anything for him but cook his food and clean his shoes. Now, they do say that Elvis was extremely good to his black employees. Giving them Cadillac cars and extra money, so take it anyway you want. **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Yeah...figures the tabs were keeping this mess alive. FWIW, I heard that Elvis was kicking in for Jackie Wilson's hospital/nursing home care until he died suddenly himself. [Edited 7/8/09 9:05am]

In terms of recording artists specifically, how many of them didn't? Elvis is hardly exceptional in these terms. The Beatles, Stones, Eric Clapton. Frank Sinatra, etc...even now it's still happening. Unfortunately, that's the nature of the beast. The fact is, White artists doing the same thing as Black artists tend to get more money/fame/etc than their Black counterparts. This has been gone over a million times on this board and in the mainstream press. There is an article at snopes that really digs into. But here is a quick breakdown of what the article says:

What a pathetic statement. Ignorant too. For christ sake stop beating this dead horse. Elvis was a great entertainer who happened to be more fortunate than his black counterparts. There were and still are many racists people in this world, but I don't believe Elvis was one of them. Like calling MJ a pedofile, people need to stop all this bullshit.

t is necessary to help others, not only in our prayers, but in our daily lives. If we find we cannot help others, the least we can do is to desist from harming them.
