^^^ I DO wonder what the criteria is here because the list just includes very basic stereotypical front men. The 50s are ignored entirely, few Yanks, and no Blacks (how can Jimi NOT be considered?) Dunno about this list.

The question states: I have listed some names below but you can pick anybody you would like to. This means you can pick anyone who you consider to be the Greatest Rock & Roll Frontman of all time.

I keep on thinking about artists like James, Prince, Sly, Jimi, but they are not strictly front men of a band. The bands were recruited around them as solo artists (is that true in the case of Jimi and Sly too?).

So the ones listed already are definitely up there. Freddie Mercury and Mick Jagger, & Bono are the ones that jump out at me most.

Please pick one name that you would consider to be the Greatest of all. Thanks.

Haven't I done this on this thread? I've added several and will add more. Since you made up this list, why were your choices so basic, might I ask?

Few more:

Ricky Nelson
Buddy Guy
Phil Lynott
Chuck Berry
Sting
David Bowie

and just for the heck of it, EC (ie Eric Clapton). Tho terrible, he is technically a bandleader.

We've got to start somewhere right? Might as well be with the basics.

Yes, BUT...

The most votes so far are for Freddie Mercury!

Let's remember, he wasn't a white English man, like some mistakenly think.

He was, of course, born Farrokh Bulsara in India.

He was an Asian man. And if you think his music didn't acknowledge that enough, listen to "Mustapha" from Queen's album "Jazz"

wink

Freddie was of Persian descent, not Indian. He did go to school in India, as well as being educated in the UK ..... & was also born in Zanzibar, Africa. So it's pretty difficult for any one country to claim him.

Ah yes, well spotted!

My bad.

Still, the point remains that he wasn't a "white" man.

Yes, what you say is true... but his parents were Parsis from India. Parsis arrived in India from Iran more than 1000 years ago... he is of Persian descent... but he's of Indian descent too...

But yes, I definitely agree that no one country can claim him...

Though if it's the frontman of a band, then is Freddie Mercury.

I knew Freddie wasn't White....I said there were no Blacks in the original list! lol Anyway. I like Queen well enough, but there was already (and still is) a Mick Jagger. cool

If we're vibing on Jagger knock offs, why not David Johannsen of The New York Dolls and Buster Poindexter fame?

True.

I consider Freddie as Indian as I am. I'm Punjabi and most Punjabi people have roots in Persia anyway. That's why we're lighter skinned that folks from Southern India.
