In case you didn't get the memo, being age 30-something is the new "old" with my generation of music listeners. At least that's what today's music industry want us to believe.

You might be shock to find out how many die-hard Janet fans had no idea that she had 2 career albums BEFORE Control. And I get label as "old" for knowing my music history, never mind that the 1980's isn't anywhere as "old" as the 1960's.

[Edited 3/23/09 19:08pm]

Man you ain't old. lol I bet that's what you told the 1960s fans, lol. But that's OK, people call me an "old soul" because I talk about nothing BUT music BEFORE my time, lol.

Damita Jo and Discipline were (are, actually!) fantastic albums. I think people were getting a little sick of Janet after the Superbowl incident, and that's why 20 YO and Discipline flopped. I was actually surprised, I thought Discipline would be a great comeback album for Janet.

I hope she continues recording. Frankly, it doesn't bother me much if people don't buy her albums. I will, because it's good music. That's all that matters to me.

The Super Bowl incident could've actually helped Janet out if she had a better team behind her. They made such wrong choices during the All for You, Damita Jo, 20 Y.O. and Discipline eras. Matter of fact, things started going wrong for Janet career wise after the initial buzz CREATED by the "All for You" single. It was like they picked wrong singles to be released and if they were promoting Janet as a pop megastar, the last four albums haven't exactly proven it, it's like she has to really think of another way to get back at the market she lost, the same market she struggled to gain with her first two albums. I say ditch the urban genre and go full-fledged dance-pop again on the next record and make records that don't always focus on your libido. Sure it works for certain artists but not every artist can get away with the same old schtick. Plus she can't be trying to compete with the 25-30 year-old artists who got her audiences. She's almost 45, she can work on pleasing the dance-pop audience and also the adult contemporary field. Maybe she can sign an exclusive deal with one store and see how that'll go. The sky's still the limit for Janet if she plays her cards right and gets focused.

Oh my, hasn't this topic been done to death already? Oh, Janet can't sell. What else is new? It's the same story for the past few years. Janet just needs to make better music and get motivated once again. The passion and fire is gone and I hear it in her music. She didn't even write a single song on her last album. Janet just aint into it anymore.

As far as sales go however, it's not entirely her fault. Radio generally doesn't pay much attention to artists who are 40+. I think that sucks but the whole entertainment industry is youth driven. I like Janet and want her to do well, but I think her time is up. She'll probably have a few hit single's, but I can't see her having another blockbuster album, at least not anytime soon. I really think she needs to stick to acting for the time being. That's the one place where she actually seems to be having success.

She HAS had a few singles that charted well ("Call on Me", "I Want You" on the R&B chart, and "Feedback") but she hasn't had any hit album lately. If she has a hit album even with no hits (and she used to be a SINGLES artist first and foremost), I think this could open a new plateau for her in her music career. But if she continues her film career, maybe this will give her a newfound success.

I disagree with you on the better music. Discipline was right up there with her best albums. The problem is that for some reason, her audience isn't there right now. Call it the Superbowl incident, or just that everyone is sick of her at the moment, but regardless, her audience isn't there.

What Janet needs to do is regroup. She's made some really bad decisions lately. Signing on to Dupri's label was one of them. She needs to get her focus back, make some kickass new music, and promote the hell out of it (that's one thing that I agree with you on Discipline, it seemed like she had all this passion on the record and then when it came time to promote it, she had no passion for the record.)

It ain't the audience, it's Janet's peeps messing her up. Problem is she's much like her brother, she'll keep them around until it's obvious they're not doing the best for her in terms of her career.

True, she's not in their league but I still think she handled things horribly. The 80s are back and if she had played her cards right, she'd be able to benefit from the 80s revival, too.

Janet is the best! I don't care what anyone else says
Her last tour was effing amazing!! She still dance like she is 20!!! Putting Beowulf, Shitney and others to shame! I can't wait to see what she does next. I agree, she needs to fix her management team. I remember during the 20 Y.O. era that her management were acting quite shady and actually left her hanging after the Superbowl incident.I hope she gets things put together because postponing concerts is only making her look bad!

Um YES! It is fair! She is in the same league with Madonna and Michael Jackson as far as innovation goes! Her popularity has decreased so she isn't as mainstream as those two but whateverrrr

I understand that. I implied that above in the bold.
But she is in the same league as far as innovation goes. There was time when she surpassed both MJ and Madonna anyway.

JANET IS NEARLY 50 YEARS OLD, even with the flop albums she had a great career, someoen can't expect to be on top forever. If janet would put her all into the projects i would want her to release a new album. but if she goes half heart i could care less.

But that's the thing tho. Things started going wrong for Janet DURING the All for You. The Super Bowl just added to it. Plus Janet's age and her people had a lot to do with her fallout. She had about fifteen years of uninterrupted success but when she canceled her European tour and singles choices weren't as successful, that's when it started to go awry IMHO. Ever since, it hasn't been looking so hot. You have to look at it in hindsight. I doubt that that one moment in Janet's career led to her downfall, it was a combination of a LOT of things that went wrong. The Super Bowl thing could've actually turned in her favor if her management company had paid attention to her but they didn't.
