How could anyone name the Beatles??

Exactly. nod Anyone who fails to recognize the genius of The Beatles must be oblivious to great art. I don't care what anyone has to say about that. They were amazing. To be able to experiment with different sounds and production techniques and still make it catchy to the ear and be successful with it is genius in itself. Which is also why I love Prince. wink

Nirvana, on the other hand...oh God. rolleyes I don't even know why critics are comparing them to The Beatles. I respect them and they were good for their time and whatever, but to say that they were up there with The Beatles? Come on. They were just a punk band that got lucky if you ask me. You got these British magazines calling Nirvana "the last great American band" as if nothing ever came out of the U.S. after them. And then Rolling Stone magazine had the nerve to put Kurt Cobain over Frank Zappa, Eddie Hazel, and Jack White and push him up to the top 20 on their list of "100 greatest guitarists". mad

Have you seen that documentary about them? I discovered a true dislike for them....except for Joey, who seemed like a gentle soul

those other ones, could all eat a bag of baby dicks

Never watched it. eek

Their music sounded the same
Dee Dee was probably racist (when he talked about his ill fated rap career, he said "I'm not colored" "I'm not a negro")
Johnny Ramone was a complete jerk and was pretty unlikeable

Ya know, I won't say they can eat a bag of baby dicks(except Dee Dee)'

I will say that their music sounded the same and I don't see much artistic growth from them

This list is funny, but everyone has an opinion.

What the Beatles & Hendrix did in their short period of time respectively is more than most artists have done in a lifetime. The Beatles repackaged American rock and made it better through each album thru. Hendrix pushed the envelope farther than any singular artist in the history of rock thru sonic experimentation with the electric guitar. I won't even get started on Bowie or James Brown.

Overrated artists are the majority artists of the MTV/video generation. These artists were competing in a diluted era where you had a few real musicians and where substance lost to style.

The most overrated by far is Janet Jackson. Never understood her appeal before the Superbowl incident. Granted, she had a few catchy songs, but she gets too much hype for being an average vocalist.

Overrated HOF:

Billy Joel
Nirvana
Tupac
Biggie
Britney Spears
Jessica Simpson
MOre to name later

And yet, we have yet to see anyone as intensely popular as Elvis... damn near every single SIDE he put out was a hit. Have you see a list of his singles in a Billboard history book, where they bold the big hits? And all of his hits are bolded? And it's a whole page of them?

Its not the fact that he was popular that made him overrated, its that "King Of Rock n' Roll" shit.

"King Of Rock N' Roll",,,,me blooming arse! hrmph

right, and i just dont see where he was that great at nothing...he didnt have a great voice, he wasnt a good dancer, he was a terrible actor and he was the original swagga jacker

I would kind of agree with tina turner. I'll admit i like some of her
songs with ike from the late 60's and early 70's but i was really not
impressed with her as a solo artist in the 80's. Private Dancer just was
not that good to me.

Private Dancer was not that great, but it was genius the way they marketed. Come on, wasn't she damn-near 50 when she did that album?

This is true! lol But then if they cannot sing, and they are music artists, then why are they popular? lol

Besides, I think they have pleasant enough voices.. for me, it's more that they are a product(??)--like it takes a "creative team" for their success. As I said, though I really do not know that much about music so.. razz Maybe all performers would be nothing without a "creative team." I have no idea.

Madonna and U2. I can see what people like about U2, they created some experimental albums. But to this day I never figured out why Madonna was and still is so popular. Bad singing voice, childish lyrics and too much controversy to cover up her bad act.

Tina Turner, she never was a good dancer or singer, the dancing was like a wild woman ready to be put to the rituals of female circumcision

Well, you're wrong about her singing. She was a fantastic singer, but as for the rest, I totally agree. That whole wild woman of the jungle routine was a little bit too pantomime. Unfortunately Beyonce seems to have based her whole act on Tina's jungle savage schtick combined with 00s booty shaking.

You have to remember that most people who call these legends overrated know absolutely nothing about their music. They often only know one or two songs from said artist and will form their entire judgement based on this hazy impression gleaned from casual glimpses. When you realise that then you can understand some of the colossal ignorance that gets manifested online. Of course, there is also just such a thing as bad taste. shrug

With that said, my list would feature.....

Elvis Presley
Janis Joplin
David Bowie (I respect him, and think "Life On Mars" is pure genius, but for the most part, greatness only came in small fragments from him. There are many artists ranked below him, like Prince, who were far better songwriters and performers)

Not really. He was a better singer than Madonna for sure, but his style was very artificial and affected.

She recorded plenty of great songs in the '80s. Off the top of my head.....

Rock & Roll Widow
Help
The Best
Be Tender With Me Baby
I Don't Wanna Lose You
Private Dancer

Great recordings of great songs. I'm still dying to hear her version of Prince's "Let's Pretend We're Married".
