Hmmm, He certainly was the most famous person until, say, mid-90s.

It's probably safe to say that the president of the United States is the most famous person on the planet these days. It was Clinton first, then Bush following.

George Bush?? How could he. Michael ist in the business for 4 decades now and Bush???

are you insane? Nobody in the present generation has heard of MJ except for the 05 case. Dubya has raped at least 4 million times that number!

Eh?

I don't know what you consider the present generation but I'm 18 and I've known of MJ since I was 3. I still remember when Dangerous album was new and Black and White video was considered amazing. I knew all the words to The way you make me feel, billie jean and beat it by the time I was 5.

?? Must a european know her? For what is she famous for other than interviewing Michael?? lol

falloff

falloff True, especially for me. Nobody really knows Oprah in Europe. NOBODY! You can hardly find pictures of her in magazines.

Mike definately is. I´ve never met ANYONE who wouldn´t know who he is.
But I´ve met people who have never heard of these people.
Pope
Geo W Bush
Madonna
Michael
Tom Cruise
Nelson Mandela
Oprah
Tina Turner
Pamela Anderson
Michael Jordan
Shaq

YOung kids really don´t care about Mandela and they have never heard of Tina Turner, Michael Jordan or Shaq. Tina Turner has finished playing in the 90´s, so kids born later on know nothing about her. Just as some americans may not know who Beckham is, Jordan and Shaq (if you mean Shaq O´Neil that basketball player) are not that famous over here because basketball is also not that popular in Europe, it´s soccer and they have also finished in the 90´s (I think). And since the rest can be found in the papers or tabloids, 99.9% know the rest of the people, but I wouldn´t be that sure about McCartney among young people. They have heard about the Beatles, but I am not sure they do know its members.

My 5 yr old nephew knows about Michael Jackson. I heard him singing "ABC" the other day and when I asked him who sings that song he blurted out "Michael Jackson". What made it more impressive is the fact that "ABC" is not even about Michael Jackson in the last 20 years but Michael from his J5 days!! It just goes to show how even the J5 has sipped into everyone's conscious.

The same with my family. My 6 year nephew knows Michael. When he sees him on TV he knows exactly who he is. And the strange thing is it doesn´t matter if it´s the Jackson 5, The Jacksons, The Thriller, Bad or Today Michael.
I´ve no explanation for this, it´s really strange.Do they show so much Jackson 5 Material on Kids TV????

He even recognice his voice from rare tracks like "Monkey Business"

Sometimes I wonder how the little kids know so much it is really astonishing!

I think that used to be said to be true, and later on, Michael Jordan. Lately I wonder if Beckham is rising in that poll, considering the international nature of soccer

other names thrown around

Madonna
Oprah
George Bush (or whoever is president)
and yes, Michael Jackson

My Vote:

Ted McGinley. Love Boat, Happy Days, Married With Children, Dancing With the Stars. legend

Are you in Europe and know who she is? I have a feeling people know who she is, but she's not nearly as popular there.

Yeah, I live in Europe and I truly know her just thanks to her interview with Mike. I am not sure if I knew who she was if she did not interview him.
But I am a teacher and when kids prepare for their A levels in English and have to learn about culture of the US, they always ask me who it is and want me to show them some pictures of her because they don´t even know what she looks like and they don´t understand why they read in the papers that they study from that she is among the richest and most powerful people in the US when they have never heard of her. It´s truly a rarity to find a person among the general public who know who Oprah is.

I agree Mike is probably more of a world artist, and Oprah is an English speaking TV star. Music & sports can cross the language barrier.

I do find it a little hard to believe that no europeans even know who she is, tho

Well, maybe in the "western" Europe, people know her but not in central or eastern Europe - in the ex-communist countries.

So we know Michael has all kinds of titles-like King of Pop(which he deserves-look at the album sells 2008 thread)

But is he also the most famous living person on this planet?
Reportes often give him this title.
So what do you think? Is there a person who is more famous and known around the world then our Mikey??

By famous I mean that if you held up a photo of the person, the largest number of people would recognize this person?
[Edited 10/6/08 15:10pm]

I HATE but this comments opeing this thread are rather RETARDED--SHORT--SIGHTED, and above all WAY TOO MATERIALISTIC!

Michael Jackson is one of the most UNHAPPY PERSONS
in existence! No amount of record sells or OBNOXIOUS TITLES can ever change the fact that Michael doesn't have a PEACE OF MIND. You can't put a price on that because it can't be bought.

Yeah, sports and musical stars definitely are more known than television personalities but I do believe people in Europe know who she is. Maybe NOT to the degree of Michael but they know her.
