LONDON (AP) — Soul diva Amy Winehouse has damaged her lungs by smoking crack cocaine and cigarettes, her father said in an interview published Sunday.

The Sunday Mirror quoted Mitch Winehouse as saying that Amy has early stage emphysema and an irregular heartbeat, and has been warned that she will have to wear an oxygen mask unless she stops smoking drugs.

"The doctors have told her if she goes back to smoking drugs, it won't just ruin her voice, it will kill her," Mitch Winehouse was quoted as saying. "There are nodules around the chest and dark marks. She has 70 percent lung capacity."

Winehouse, 24, collapsed at her north London home Monday after signing autographs for a group of fans and was taken to a London hospital for tests. She remained there all week.

She is still scheduled to sing at a concert in London on Friday celebrating the 90th birthday of Nelson Mandela, the South African Nobel Prize-winner, and plans to take part in the Glastonbury music festival the following day.

Mitch Winehouse said it would be good for his daughter to perform.

"When she's been inactive work-wise then that's when the problems really start. The doctors have said that medically there isn't any reason why she can't do Glastonbury," the paper quoted him as saying.

He also pleaded with her drug-taking friends to stay away from her.
"What hope does she have if people are taking drugs around her," he said.
Chris Goodman, spokesman for Amy Winehouse, said "If that's what Mitch says, that's what he says. It sounds right."

Mitch Winehouse could not immediately be reached for comment.

I feel she will be dead soon if she does not clean up.

Terrible news This'll either drive her to an improved lifestyle or (my fear; my hunch) give her complete license to indulge until she winds up dead somewhere. She may think, "I was losing the battle before, but why even bother now?"

illness is illness. my grandmother died of emphysema. the cause of it might have been her own fault but she was still my grandmother and seeing her suffer was still painful to me.

maybe we could all be a little less shallow about other people's suffering.

Not to defend her, as she is obviously going to hell in a handbasket, but having impetigo has nothing to do with drugs. Any normal, non-drug taking person can get this bacterial infection.

That's true. But depending on what combination of substances she's taking, some drugs do suppress the immune system, making infections like these easier to catch.

Junkies generally stop eating right, sleeping right, showering, hanging out with "clean" people, etc, etc, etc.

I really wish this girl can stop the self-destructive behavior. It's no longer a case of talent wasted; it's a life heading to a premature end.

Yes she did it to herself and now it's her responsibility to stop, but it's still sad that someone young & talented is still so empty that she has to do something as stupid as smoking crack.

i think if amy's parents want to really get involved, they would find a way to get her out of the public eye for as long as it takes for her to get well and to be well-adjusted enough to return to the public eye - which could be never. i don't think all people are meant to experience fame or public scrutiny, and i think she is a perfect example. or, she might grow up a bit and figure out how to keep creating the music she loves, but in a way that doesn't compromise her ability to lead a healthy life. patti smith and kate bush both disappeared for years and years so they could raise families outside of the public eye. it's possible to just walk away from it for what's really important. i wish amy would do that for a while. it would be worth not having a new album for a while.
