It really sounds like Prince's Nothing Compares 2 U as covered by Sinead O'Connor!

you can also hear this song and even more new music at http://www.imeem.com/mymondo
The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

Remember there is only one destination and that place is U
All of it. Everything. Is U.

The music is very good. I shall not comment about her voice, except to say that it's not so terrible as to discourage me from getting the album and having to turn in my fan card.

Okay, so I just listened to her album and...

eek

I love Scarlett Johansson. When I first heard about this, oh, I don't know, a year ago (?) I thought that this was one of the more bizarre movie star vanity side projects that I'd ever heard of. It was either going to be a complete trainwreck or absolutely phenomenal. It's both, really.

Wow, this girl really cannot sing. She can't even carry a tune. She has a vocal range of about... 3 notes. I'm not kidding. And her delivery style is a cross between Nico on even more drugs and Maya Rudolph's impersonation of Donatella Versace. And the producers know this. They do everything they can to cover it up the fact. Her voice is processed out the wazoo. Thanks to multi-tracking, there's at least 2 or 10 of her singing at one time, and at times she sounds like she's standing about 10 feet away from the microphone. No, not good at all, and they tried to minimize it, fortunately.

But...

But!

BUT!!!

The music! I absolutely LOVE it. I love the arrangements. I love the production. Who produced this? They're onto something here. I'm abso-fucking-lutely in love with the music on this album. It's like a fucked-up dystopian Wall of Sound on quaaludes. I mean, the number of times sleigh bells alone crop up gives me tingles. If it weren't for her vocals, this might actually be one of my favorite albums of the year. And I think the producers realized this at some point, considering everything they did to take her out of the mix.

And a quick note about Bowie's background vocals. Man, I miss him. sad I didn't even realize how much until I heard him on here. Damn. The combination of Bowie crooning/wailing and the music on "Fannin Street" gave me chills. It damn near made me cry. It's really a shame that he's not still around doing something new and seems to have no interest in doing so. Had this album been Bowie on lead vocals, with this music even as a covers project, this could very well have been my favorite album of the year. I'm not kidding. I dug him and the production on this that much.
"Try to remember how you used to feel about me
and think about how you're treating me now.
Then try to reconcile them, if you can.
But you don't even remember, do you?"

I heard an early track that gave me some hope. She had good control of her voice, sang with an even tone, enunciated well...that musta been the best of the batch. lol Love her as an actress but I dunno.

You sound like a grade 4 teacher listing the merits of a student's speech, not someone describing an actual vocal performance lol

Hah. One of my best friends teaches voice at NYU. I'm used to hearing him critique voices.

When I heard the first tune (can't remember the name, a standard of some sort) she sounded good. The others I've heard since...not so much. lol

of course she can't really sing, but that's not the point. tom waites isn't much of singer either. i think on the whole the cd is lacking but i still enjoy listening to it, i like the vibe. but the oringinal track is a stinker.

I think the difference is Tom Waits has his established style and his songs are written for his voice.

She's actually trying to sing and it is barely more melodic that Tom's mangled crooning (which is great).

Tom = Good

Scarlett = Bad

She's claiming Tom likes the album but "hasn't actually said that".
Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it.

I just listened to the entire album. The music is very 80s 4AD which I like. It reminds me of old Clan Of Xymox mixed with a little Book Of Love.

No comment about the vocals.

pout

ALRIGHT ALL YOU NAYSAYERS!!!!!

Listen to this vid of her singing "Summertime".

Obviously she can sing. No Celine Dion mind you, but better than Britney Spears by a mile.

As for FALLING DOWN...shrug...I assume she went for the "artsy, folksy" sound.

No matter, she's still hot...er...I mean talented.

Anxiety

i "previewed" this album today by going on iTunes and downloading the 2 songs w/ bowie. i don't know that i'm going to rush out and get the rest of the album, but i was not disgusted by scarjo's voice. it was kind of a flatter version of sinead to me...kind of that strident rock/folk quality, with maybe just the teensiest bit of weakness to her voice. i like the lack of affectation or pretense in her singing - she isn't trying to sound like cat power or feist and she's not trying to pull a juliette lewis and call on her inner joan jett. that is appreciated. lol

i did enjoy the musical arrangements. if anything grows on me enough to make me want this album, it will be that.

oh, as for bowie...it was a treat to hear him warbling away in the background, but it's nothing "essential" for bowie fanatics unless you've gotta just have EVERYthing (and i have no idea who around here is that neurotic lurking redface )
