Jill Scott to play Precious Ramotswe in BBC adaptation of The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/h...289129.stm

The best-selling book The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is to be made into a television series.

Alexander McCall Smith's novel, which follows the adventures of detective Precious Ramotswe, is to be made into 13 episodes.

Singer and actress Jill Scott will star in the lead role.

A 90-minute pilot adapted by screenwriter Richard Curtis and directed by Anthony Minghella will be screened on BBC One this Easter.

Minghella is famed for winning an Oscar in 1996 for directing The English Patient, and he was also Oscar-nominated for writing the screenplay for 1999's The Talented Mr Ripley.

Curtis has written screenplays for Bridget Jones's Diary and the sequel The Edge of Reason, Love Actually, Notting Hill and Four Weddings and a Funeral. He has also been behind TV series including Blackadder and The Vicar of Dibley.

US television network HBO are partnering the BBC to make the series and filming will begin this summer in Botswana, where the novel is set.

'Highly entertaining'

"Alexander McCall Smith's wonderful books have been a sensation around the world for years, and we're thrilled to be teaming up with the BBC to adapt these highly entertaining stories for HBO," said HBO's co-president, Richard Plepler.

Joining Jill Scott on the series will be Dreamgirls star Anika Noni Rose as Precious' highly-efficient, yet rather peculiar, secretary Mma Makutsi.

British actors Colin Salmon, David Oyelowo and Idris Elba will also star.

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency chronicles the adventures of Precious Ramotswe, the proprietor of the only female-owned detective agency in Botswana.

Aided by Mma Makutsi, Mma Ramotswe investigates cases, helps people solve problems in their lives, and begins a special friendship with the owner of a local garage.

McCall Smith has had global success with the nine novels he has written about Mma Ramotswe.

That's cool for Jill. Hopefully Anthony can guide her acting better than Tyler Perry did, she wasn't so great in that flick (or maybe the editing lingered on her too long @ times which can fuck up a performance too)...
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

This is great news! I'm sure Jill will do a fantastic job. I've read all of this series and they're great little stories about life in Botswana. Simple books, but with a positive message.

She did well in Why did I get married, Tyler is a bit 'B grade' anwyay when it comes to his production, but his stories has heart, corny, but heart none the less.

I'd watch Jill Scott or listen to her do anything. That smile, that voice, you cant help but watch and listen to her, its a very good place to be isn't Ms Scott. razz

I loved her in Why Did I Get Married. The best acting from that whole movie IMO.

Matter o' fact, its the ONLY Tyler Perry movie I enjoyed thoroughly,,,,for the fact it lacks the usual buffoonary that Mr.Perry is known for. Back to Jilly, she played a timid character which is way outta her lead,,,but I guess thats why they call it acting.

Lookin' forward for the rest of her acting career nod
