Portishead Third; new album

Portishead is about to release a new album after a studio recording silence of 11 years, simply called Third.

The new album is different. I love it. It is louder, angrier, wilder than their first two albums. And yet, it stems from that sound we know so well, the voice that has haunted us in the past.

I cannot wait for a tour...

The overall feel of the album is not as uniform as the first two albums; it skips from bombastic overwhelming anguish on We Carry On to a one minute 39 seconds lasting bluesy acappela of Deep Water, only to return to the harsh beat of Machine Gun.

Yet, Beth Gibbons' voice and Barrow's instrumentation offer a return to style, making my first listen something good. This will rule my iPod for some time to come.

Oh I don't even know the titles yet. I have it playing (blindly on my iPod shuffle with no screen on it) at work today.

My first thought was:

I actually don't think it is even that different considering the span of time between this and the last album, but then again I believe their music to be somewhat timeless.

True. There is that sound. But I love the fact it rocks out at times. Them beats. Whaddaya think of the beats?

There's the one with the fragmented drum fill that gets me geeked. nod

I guess the beats are the most different aspect of the album. Some of 'em are on some simple Young Marble Giants schitt.

Before on a live Youtube video, I had heard the song with the distorted electronic (TR-909?) snare, and I was ready to hear more new stuff.

I like that they still have the eerie theremin and forever ringing guitar on parts of the album.

Yeah a little bit! I always thought that was an element of their earlier music too though.
