LOL
Yeah, I was at a loss for words too. Being a fan of her earlier work I was quite shocked she'd gone all "Trancey".

...and I won't even tell you how I reacted to "Shanti" lol

Thanks for making me feel like an old man. Really appreciate it. thumbs up!

As for the album, "pretentious" and "boring" are two words that spring to mind.

Exactly! It CAN´T be 10 years.

Was this her first album post Lourdes? For the most part I liked her vibe on this, seemed like she'd chilled out a bit.

It's good that you managed to make yourself like it in the end. I suspect you're not the only Madonna fan who's had to talk themselves into liking this one.

I remember buying this and the 'Frozen' maxi single that came out the same day at Virgin Megastore and got a votive candle as a gift with purchase...does not seem like 10 yearsa ago!!!!!

This was a great era for her...she was enlightened, mellow as she's ever been...She did her best Oprah appearance when this album came out...she was much more chill than the first one for 'Evita' in which she looked nervous just sitting there...

i loved at that time the a major hindu assoc issued a statement saying that performance offended simply because it was Madonna and she was known for being hoeish.

totally loved it from the first listen and still do. and i still
think it's her best and most accomplished attemt at "electronic"
music. it's much stronger than either music or american life imo

it's one of those albums, like U2's Achtung Baby and Depech Mode
Songs of Faith and Devotion etc that have their very own feel in
sonics, lyrics and artwork, creating something really special.

can't believe it's been 10 yrs already. this album was released
at the same time i had my 'coming out' lol.

i can remember taking my -then walkman- to school and listening
to "frozen" before the album was released. smoking cigarettes n
listening to the stereo mc's remix as i skipped classes

smile

then the album was released and i listened to it all summer long
as i drove across the province on my bycicle visiting friend and
to go dancing at night.

ahhhhh memories sigh
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Still one of the BIGGEST masterpieces of the late 90's.

It was the big Madgie's comeback after the Erotica controversies, the lukewarm reception of Betdime Stories and the relative failure of Evita.

"Frozen" and "Ray of Light" are two of her biggest singles of all time

I discovered Madonna with "Secret" and "Take a bow" (I was 10), but I still remember how huge "Frozen" and "Ray of light" were.

Ray of light made Madonna relevant again, and a lot of new fans were made in the process ( me included cool )

Being the Janet/Madonna rivalry trivia nerd I am...

"ROL" outdid "Janet" it's first week for the highest FIRST week sales by a female artist - Soundscan era when it came out this week in 98, I remember.

That was of course shattered a couple months down the road by Lauryn Hill's debut solo.

I actually don't prefer the singles from this one, except "Power of Goodbye." I like:

"Swim"
"Candy Perfume Girl"
"Skin"
"Sky Fits Heaven"
"POG"
"To Have and Not to Hold"

I have never been since or before so excited about a new Madonna release. This was the height of my fandom - Erotica through ROL. I was at first...disappointed with it when I finally heard it. Didn't know what to make of it. Then I grew to LOOOOOVE Candy Perfume Girl...i still love that track. Love the trip hop vibe. Then i discovered the girl who I liked in high school was a huge Madonna fan, and that her fave was "Power of Goodbye" - so naturally that became my fave too. Still a great tune...love that she went on a mini Power of Goodbye tour and performed it at a ton of award shows.

I can also see why this one was the first one the Grammys recognized. While I understand Lauryn winning album of the year, I thought it would have been great for ROL the track to have won "Record of the Year." I couldn't believe it when that frigid B*#)TH Celine's old ass "Titanic" single won out. The same single/soundtrack that blocked ROL from being number one! Almost a year later!

I think I'll listen to it tonight. Of course, you have to add her best b-side, "Has to Be."

I can't believe it's been 10 years already! Anyway, ROL is a great album and it has some of Madonna's best songs ever. I don't know if she'll ever be able to top it.

She probably won't top it since, but three of her albums BEFORE - Erotica, Bedtime, and Like A Prayer are superior IMHO. I tie her debut and ROL for fourth place; Confessions is number 5.

Me too ~ we were tranced on that ride home. And, the faster she would sing, the faster you would drive. 10 Years, wow. What a great album. I loved it from the first listen and it is still one of my favourites.

If two are tied for fourth, that would make Confessions #6.

FWIW, Confessions is #2 for me behind ROL. Madonna would probably be next.
