Rolling Stone Magazine's list of 50 best songs over 7 minutes long

Rolling Stone magazine recently released a list of the 50 best songs over 7 minutes long, these chosen by the readers. Heres the list.

In Memory of Elizabeth Reed - Allman Brothers Band
Bella Lugosi's Dead - Bauhaus
B-Boy Bouillabaisse - Beastie Boys
Hey Jude - Beatles
War Pigs/Luke's Wall - Black Sabbath
Tender - Blur
Bel Air - Can
Pictures of You - Cure
Station to Station - David Bowie
Layla - Darek and the Dominos
The End - Doors
Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands - Bob Dylan
Maggot Brain - Funkadelic
The Message - Grandmaster Funk
Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day
Estranged - Guns N' Roses
Isn't It a Pity? - George Harrison
In-a-Gadda-da-Vida - Iron Butterfly
Three Days - Jane's Addiction
Scenes From an Italian Restaurant - Billy Joel
Funeral For a Friend - Elton John
In the Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson
All My Friends - LCD Soundsystem
When the Levee Breaks - Led Zeppelin
Free Bird - Lynyrd Skynyrd
Autobahn - Kraftwerk
One - Metallica
Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns - Mother Love Bone
Oh, Comely - Natural Milk Hotel
Blue Monday - New Order
We're In This Together - Nine Inch Nails
Champagne Supernova - Oasis
Sheep - Pink Floyd
Purple Rain - Prince
Can't You Hear Me Knockin' - Rolling Stones
Svgen-g-englar - Sigur Ros
The Sprawl - Sonic Youth
Jungleland - Bruce Springsteen
I Am the Resurrection - Stone Roses
Franke Teardrop - Suicide
Marquee Moon - Television
What Goes Around Comes Around - Justin Timberlake
Heroin - Velvet Underground
Only in Dreams - Wheezer
Ball & Buscuit - White Stripes
Won't Get Fooled Again - Who
Spiders (Kid Smoke) - Wilco
Starship Trooper - Yes
Cortez the Killer - Neil Young
Willie the Pimp - Frank Zappa

Good to see When The Levee Breaks by Led Zeppelin in there. Half a dozen songs could've been chosen but they chose the best one. Also nice to see Maggot Brain and Three Days in there. What songs would you add to it or omit? I'd replace Estranged by G n R with Locomotive by the same band.

I'd have picked

Shine On You Crazy Diamond - Pink Floyd
This is not an exit

.and there is no way Estranged by Guns N Roses is better than Locomotive by the same band. There is also some serious funk and jazz missing.

Are these album versions? Because The Cure's "Pictures Of You" on Disintegration is not seven minutes long. That's the promo 12" version only.

I would add:

You And I - Rick James
This Corrosion - The Sisters Of Mercy
Love To Love You Baby - Donna Summer

add edit

Yeah i think that deserves a place in the Top 50. There are loads of great funk/soul tracks but i think that ones at the top of the tree.

Thank you. No "All Blues," "My Favorite Things," "Tanya," "Dimuendo and Crescendo (live)," or "Speak No Evil" on this list? And these are music journalists?

And I know it's little under ten minutes BEFORE 7 minutes but I'd include Donny's "The Ghetto" too. biggrin

The music was chosen by the readers. Problem is a lot of time people vote for what they will think will have a chance of making the list and not vote for their true favorites.

I see; thanks for the clarification. I think there are some serious jazz heads among the millenials, and I wish sometimes these publications would reflect that.

How the hell is Harry Chapin's SNIPER or BETTER PLACE TO BE not on this list?

I'm admittedly biased as a Stevie fanatic, but I can't believe one of those wasn't picked. Stevie had a number of great songs over 7 minutes long:

Another Star
My Eyes Don't Cry
Love Having You Around
Superwoman (Where Were You When I Needed You)
Love's in Need of Love Today
Do I Do
Sunshine in Their Eyes
Black Man

You could just choose Songs In The Key of Life, it seems every song on there goes at least six and a half minutes!

The album version of Pictures of You is 7:29 -- it qualifies. Don't think their list would exist if they didn't include album versions (radio has always dictated the practice of shorter edits for singles).

My bad, I was looking at the edited iTunes version of Disintegration. I haven't played that album in a long time.
