Beirut Did anyone rave about this band already? Well, band. Zach Condon is a youngster that used other musicians on tour, but is basically thesole musician/singer on his album.
Anyone that lists Jacques Brel, Magnetic Fields, The smiths, Klezmer, the Kocani Orkestar ( and any balkan brass music),crooners, Serge Gainsbourg, Yves Montand and Caetano Veloso as influences is worth checking out, right? www.beirutband.com http://www.myspace.com/beruit Their album The Flying Club Cup is amazing. It is a bit Arcade Fire-ish, as they use folky instruments and mix world music with indie-rock. Go check them out. [Edited 11/17/07 8:42am]

I am SO in love with the melancholy voice of Zach Condon. And his trumpet conveys the same feeling.
Beautiful. | |

i'm working on it. I even allow you to NOT like it, as long as you TRY it. If you into melancholy, this is the thing. I heard his voice described as Rufus Wainwright's, which, to some extent, is right, but it is not doing him justice. Zach Condon's melancholic, not dramatic, as Wainwright. Beirut's already my fave album of the year.

I missed out what was happening last year with music what with my travels. Beirut sounded quite interesting though along with Cold War Kids, Grizzly Bear and I'm From Barcelona. In the meantime I was listening to a lot of Gustavo Santaolalla (I can't get enough of this guy), Manu Chao and Rodrigo Y Gabriela. There's Joy In Expatriation.
