Should I like Robbie Williams?

From what I hear he is huge overseas, but here in the states he only had one real hit. Is anybody here a fan of his?
Should I check out his music? Whats his style? hmmm
If you will, so will I

Wow not sure ...robbie has charm and cheeky but his music is sort of here and now ...you like it now but would you like it in 5 years time...he does have one or two trax of merit but he far from the best of british as he's not really a great song writer , as far as i know he does not play a instruments and can't dance and just about holds a note when singing but

he really good on stage as live performer..it just works..but i don't know why?

I'm guessing but was Angles the hit in the US?

PS check out Take That...

he has his rubbish moments...but he is pretty good at times.
he does have a very good voice though, some of his televised live performances have been fantastic.

im not a huge fan, but i do like some of the things he has done,

but i highly suggest getting the album 'intensive care' it is truly outstanding; you wont hear many more solid songs than the opener, and there arent any bad songs on it, there is even a quality reggae tune on it.
Wouldn't you love to love me?

Okay, so by reading you all's posts so far I assume he's rather average, but he has a nice voice and puts on a good show.

Hmm...well this isn't exactly making me want to blaze a trail to the record store for him, but I will check out Take That, LondonStyle

He's surely the best european pop-star of the last 10 years.
His first two albums, Life thru a Lens (97) and I've been expecting you (98) are excellent, solid brit-pop albums full of late-90's classics: Lazy Days, Angels, Let me entertain you, Millenium, Win some lose some, She's the one, etc.; Sadly, after that classic albums, Robbie has been releasing pop/rock albums with some fine singles but extremely weak as a whole: Sing when you're winning (2000)(which includes the hit Rock DJ, Escapology (2003) and Intensive Care(2005)(with one of his best songs of all time, Tripping). And just don't pay attention to the Swing when you're winning (2001) album, a trite collection of covers of the 40's; Robbie's voice is fun for a pop album, but he's not Sinatra, that's for sure rolleyes

Surprisingly, his last effort, Rudebox (2006) was a very strong dance/electro-pop album, its production is just awesome.

I recommend you to purchase Life thru a lens, I've been expecting you , the Greatest Hitsalbum (2004) and Rudebox wink

he's ok but he is obviously having psychological problems.

he cannot handle the fact that Take That are now even more sucessfull than they ever were.

Take That already outsold his last album domestic and international.

While Robbie has been crying and suffering depression.

Get over it Robbie,

Robbie is a filthy rich bastard who has sold millions of records.
He sold a few million in the usa too, but never seems to have caught on.

i don't think he gives a fuck anymore. after all, if you've sold 60 million albums worldwide, whats the fucking fuss about usa?

i agree with him. if usa don't like him, then fuck em.

i liked his "ego has landed" album, and i tried to get into him after that but i couldn't do it. but that one album i still like okay, when i'm in the mood for some decent mindless pop.

I guess I was watching more TV/listening to the radio more back in 99 cause Millennium seemed like it was everywhere, whereas I'd never heard Angels before today

Robbie is the marmite of British music. He's not the full ticket either. He's having a bit of a backlash at the moment but he does make some great records. Here's a couple the US missed....

"Angels" was the followup to "Millennium" here. Believe me, it was on the radio just as much as (if not more than) "Millennium" a few months later. That was the big push to break Robbie here in the states. It didn't work; he hasn't come close to equalling the success of Take That's sole hit here, "Back for Good" (#7 in 1995).

Now that I think about it, the difference is probably the fact that everybody and their mom used "Millennium" in their ads in 1999 (but I did my celebrating at the end of 2000, so whatever).

Not necessarily. It probably depends on the market. I bought the album when it came out and liked it. I heard Millenium quite a bit, and I don't recall ever hearing Angels on the radio here.

It may depend somewhat, but within reason. Clear Channel was already dominate at that point. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but the fact that "Angels" peaked over 30 spots higher than "Millennium" almost certainly means it had more airplay (at least overall). OTOH, I see that "Angels" peaked at #10 on the Adult Contemporary chart, so maybe I was hearing it mostly on some AC station. Still, I think most of the (over)exposure of "Millennium" came from TV ads and MTV.

FWIW, the ARC charts at Rockonthenet.com had both songs peaking in the top 10 ("Millennium" at #8 and "Angels" at #6).

If you like what you hear, you certainly should like him! I'm really turned off by his personality, even if he has a few nice songs.

He's a very 'British' performer, I don't think it works on a US audience. He was really force fed, so naturally I hated him but the Rudebox album just sort of came out and the songs hardly got any play but this one wasn't bad.

I'm not disputing how songs are charted (and I'm familiar with Billboard chart data). I'm simply telling you that I didn't hear Angels on the radio much, and at the time I was a slave to the dial.

At any rate, Robbie is given a lot of slack here, but he's an interesting performer whose music - like many in similar situations - often takes a backseat to the drama in his personal life.
