NEW MUSIC THAT DOESN'T SUCK!

Since we all bitch so much (and rightly so) about the state of modern music, I'm presenting a challenge to the Orgers who frequent these parts. Name a recent album -let's say, within the last 2 years -that you genuinely like. If you've not found one yet, go out on an adventure to find one and report back to us.

I'll go first. smile

The Fratellis -Costello Music

I bought it on a whim yesterday. Upon seeing their disc in a store and vaguely remembering their name from somewhere, I took a chance and shelled out for it. Very nice. Fun rock sound with a punk-esque influence on some tracks. So worth the money. thumbs up!

Your turn. cool

Silvechair - Young Modern

ARIA Highest Selling Single of the Year (Straight Lines)
ARIA Rock Album of the Year
ARIA Group of the Year
ARIA Single of the Year (Straight Lines)
ARIA Album of the Year

This is by far one of the best albums I have heard in recent times. Really innovative, creative music that seems to be going somewhere. Favourite cuts are
"Straight Lines", "If You Keep Losing Sleep", "Those Thieving Birds", "The Man The Knew Too Much" and "Mind Reader". It's futuristic pop-rock at its best.

well, i decided to check and see what my nominees for my annual top ten list would be.

and for the entire year, i could only come up with 9 records that came out. now those are new albums, i bought a ton of re-issues this year, but i don't count those as new releases.

so as far as new releases go, the only ones to make my list thus far are....

Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals - Lifeline
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights
Mark Ronson - Version
Nino Moschela - The Fix
Tracey Thorn - Out Of The Wood
Me'Shell Ndegeocello - The World Has Made Me The Man Of My Dreams
The Magic Numbers - Those The Brokes
Jill Scott - The Real Thing (Words & Sounds Vol 3)
Jonatha Brooke - Careful What You Wish For

that's it for me.
i need at least 1 more record to come out this year to even get to 10.

that's a little scary.

it's good, though not as good as her first solo release and definitely not better than her Moloko stuff.

if you dig her first solo release you should check out the cat that produced it, "Herbert". his last album "Scale" was some of the nicest pop electronica i've heard in a long time.

btw, Moloko has released a "best of" and it has an extra track titled "bankrupt emotionally" that happens to be a real gem.

The only band to come out in the 2000's that I really love is THE STROKES...

The STROKES - "First Impressions of Earth"

there are loads of good new acts...every year people state that music is getting worse (i bet people were saying that in the early 80s), its a very singular view.
the only music i have a problem with is all this indie music that sounds the same..like babyshambles and stuff..music for the least talented musicians to perform.

for me..best new band by far - the guillemots. fresh, original and beautiful music, topped off by having a hauntingly good singer, id even go as far as classing his voice in the league of george michaels.
Wouldn't you love to love me?

i dig it! i've always avoided listening to them because i'd rather listen to Fela or Femi if i wanted to hear some funk like that, but obviously, i submitted and found myself impressed. i'm sure if you're familiar with them you'd dig this. i've read articles stating this is their best work yet, though you'd have to be the judge of that. smile

Man I feel sorry for Americans. You guys find it hard to find new music you like whereas I have a hard time trying to pick with new Australian release I like best. Australia's had a very healthy year in music so far. This is just my selection of the top picks from this year...

The above pics link the youtube videos. I've had a hard time convincing many orgers on the wonders of Oz music. But as there is a huge funk/R&B/soul following on this forum I recommend head straight for Gotye's Mixed Blood and click on the cover that looks like blotches of paint. You'll like it wink. You may also like JBT. But hopefully you find all of them worth while.

It's strange that even thought current American music sucks, US albums still top the charts in the US. It's a wonder they haven't embraces international music. Australian artist have been trying to push their music in US, performing on Jay Leno and stuff, but sadly the yanks don't have the time of day for any foriegn music.

Not many of my albums listed are American albums. That said, I think Australia's output is even weaker, and I live here now. sad The only album in that bunch I would consider picking up is Sneaky Sound System, but their music almost seems to be created to be included in some "trendy" commercial.
