For the first day of Fall...what are your favorite autumnal albums?

Although I'm always saddened to see Summer go, I think some of the best releases have come out during the Fall. And even more so, some of my favorite music reminds me of this time of year. I realized that one my most cherished albums came out 10 years ago on the first day of Fall.

Bjork's Homogenic...

I know that she was trying to create "Icelandic music", but she also recorded the majority of it in Spain. The gutteral strings, the subtle accordian, the mix of bitter and sweet, the confrontational nature of it - the whole thing reminds me of the end of summer, beginning of fall.

In her own life and work, the shift would parallel the seasons. She went from an extroverted, powerful, honest stance to something much more insulated and hidden on her next albums. In fact, her first 4 main releases seem to mirror the seasonal changes throughout the year.

Debut -> Spring (naive, fresh, new)
Post -> Summer (energy, color, life)
Homogenic -> Fall (change, harvest, loss)
Vespertine -> Winter (dormancy, quiet, isolation)

So yeah, I'm feelin' Homogenic. There are a million other records that remind me of Fall, but this is the first that comes to mind.

What are some of yours?

Homogenic is definitely the best Fall album. Listening to PJ Harvey last night felt very ominous and Fall~like. Tricky's Nearly God and nearly all of Nick Drake's work make me feel that way too. Beautuful time of year but melancholy becuase of the bleak Winter coming.

Nick Drake's work always sounded perfect for autumn to me, the soundtrack to an overcast November day

Roxy Music- Stranded

That one's pure summer to me. Maybe cuz I was in Hawaii in the middle of January and it was a perfect 82 degrees every day, I have that association.

I think the hot chick in the tropical location colors my opinion too. The song titles too like "Mother of Pearl" and "Amazona" seem hot and summery.
