Not for me. Growing up with the old skool ways of old elderly black women I appreciated how she opened herself up to let the young man correct how he misspoke to her. Quiet as it's kept, proper speaking with women has been representative of my culture for THE LONGEST time, contrary to what today's MTV culture would have you believe.wink

After the part where Patti LaBelle said, "You're very freaking rude," she added "I don't play that. This is not Li'l Kim, OK?"

The more I look at it, the more it seems like LaBelle did overreact. Apparently, she didn't like being upstaged by some random guy in the audience who took a joke too far for her taste. The ironic part is that LaBelle went into some diatribe about being disrespectful to women just after she was singing a song about being a prostitute.

In all honesty, it looked like the guy thought LaBelle was going to play along with his comment and didn't realize she went into full-bitch/diva mode until she asked him to leave. However, she does realize she was the only one in the audience who took it too seriously, hence the apology.

I agree, and your comments make total sense to a point. Now, I'm going to assume that you are from the same "Old School" I'm from. If so, then you know that back in the day while growing up, a young man would not even fix his lips to say anything like that to one of his elders. I know that this is a new day and age with all these crappy songs and videos on the air waves that degrade women...but back in the day it just didn't happen...especially to your elder.

You know that you could be on one side of town acting a fool and someone would call you out and say "arn't you so and so child?" Then they would put you in check and you would stand there and listen....And when you got home your mom would jam you up cause she already got a phone call and heard about what you did! lol

Did Patti over-react? Mabey...mabey not! But I bet that dude will think twice before he makes a wise crack to another older Black lady! lol lol lol

Well what was she SUPPOSED to do? confused

"Do you know who I am?" is never an appropriate question, even to an asshole; unless of course you're being intentionally ironic.

On the other hand, pointing out that she is a woman and is not sending any such signals would put this fool in his place without also acting a fool.

Taking offense is such a waste of energy.

I strongly suspect that Patti herself knew that she didn't handle the first part well, which is why she couldn't go on without some kind of resolution/closure (which she handled much better, but with the same great directness).

I'm certainly not shocked by Patti's behavior in the least.

And both could use their culture as a crutch. Just because Patti's culture is older and more predictable, doesn't make it right.

Would I handle this situation better?

To be honest, this situation would probably be handled awkwardly by me the first time.

But I would garner experience and have plenty of time to ponder the way I should have handled it so that the next fool would be stripped with the precision of a brain surgeon.

While what you say is true in what I call real-life situations, I feel it's a little misplaced here. Here, we're talking about a concert performance and usually such fan/entertainer interactions are flirtatious in nature. And given that this is PATTI LaBELLE here -- an entertainer known for having concert performances with such involved interactions with fans -- I'm sure in all the years she has been performing on stage she's not new to this.

I personally look at that interaction as one where LaBelle didn't feel like carrying on in that fashion at that time with that particular man. I'm sure if someone like Tom Joyner said that, she would have done one of her typical "Whew!"-like expressions and put her hands in the air in "Have mercy!" fashion.

It seems like LaBelle's reaction was, "No man young enough to be my son is going to flirt with me like that!" I also feel she went into bitch/diva mode when the crowd reacted to his comment more than to hers.

Ms. LaBelle is as real as they come.

More than a decade ago, she graced a black journalists' national convention session (it was being held in Philly).

She interrupted the session to complain about her hip. Her then-husband tried to shush her and move her away from talking about her health.

She said: "I don't care. Something doesn't feel right. I'm going to say it."

She was awesome then and still is. She was reacquainting folks with cross-generational decorum and the difference between entertainment and real life.

She seized the teaching moment that young man had presented her. I don't think that kind of correction happens enough in pop culture.

So, singing a song about a prostitute paves the way for someone to get physically close w/ her? Talk shit to her? confused I think the most important part of that sentence is the "singing a song" part - she's a performer, she was singing a song, period. The subject matter really isn't the point...

biggrin biggrin biggrin I would like to know what video you saw because the one I saw with Patti LaBelle and the man dancing didn't sound nearly as dramatic as the one you saw.

The man was the same distance from LaBelle when he was "singing" at the beginning of the clip -- so if he was "too close" when he was dancing then he was too close when he was "singing," and I didn't recall LaBelle saying he was too close or she was uncomfortable. She made that comment about him to get some response from the audience.

And talking shit?!? "You heard me" is talking shit and being disrespectful? The man didn't call her out of her name. It seemed to me it was typical fan/entertainer interaction you see at a concert -- and particularly one of LaBelle's concerts, where she pulls men on stage for a little sing-along interaction. She thought she was upstaged, which is why she ranted for several minutes -- including ranting AFTER he left the stage.

Oh yeah, I recall LaBelle saying something about "pimp-slapping" him. I guess that's not disrespectful to someone who obviously wanted to see her in concert, huh? rolleyes

You would have a point if the man was actually trying to grind on her or called her "bitch" or "ho," but I did not see anything different I've typically seen from a fan of hers in concert. I've seen her act more intimately in concerts with male singers like Gerald Levert, Luther Vandross and El DeBarge.

Like I said, this is LaBelle having her diva/bitch moment. She can sing a song about selling snatch and asking men to come upstage with her for some interaction, but let someone she thinks is unworthy try to upstage her and she reads him. She likely killed the rest of the concert experience for the audience with the tactic, because she went too far with that.

So for you to see it as truly disrespectful he'd have to grind her & call her a bitch?? lol Sorry, my line of "disrespect" is different from yours, especially when it comes to a younger man saying things to an older woman & vice versa. Well, considering I'm likely the same age as (if not older than) you, it's pretty apparent you're missing the boat. I didn't say the man HAD to call Patti LaBelle a bitch or ho in order to disrespect her. However, he didn't say anything to disrespect her -- because apparently your idea of "disrespect" is stealing a diva's thunder from the audience.

But I get it: To you, it's "respectful" for LaBelle to make a joking comment (even though it's clear the man wasn't near her when he was dancing) and LaBelle certainly didn't say anything in her tone to state she was uncomfortable with the man's dancing.

Then it's "respectful" for LaBelle to snap at a person, order him off the stage like an entitled diva and make a comment about "pimp-slapping" him. I get it -- except where I come from it's called a "double-standard."

THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. HOLD ON TO YOUR DRAWERS!

So for you to see it as truly disrespectful he'd have to grind her & call her a bitch?? lol Sorry, my line of "disrespect" is different from yours, especially when it comes to a younger man saying things to an older woman & vice versa.

Well, considering I'm likely the same as (if not older than) you, it's pretty apparent you're missing the boat. I didn't say the man HAD to call Patti LaBelle a bitch or ho in order to disrespect her. However, we didn't say anything to disrespect her -- because apparently your idea of "disrespect" is stealing a diva's thunder from the auidence.

You're so caught up in the "diva" thing you can't seem to see this as an older woman being "sassed" by a young man who got too comfortable. shrug
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart
