This is a feature story in the latest VIBE. A very worthwhile read... This story had to be prepared for some time. Interesting that it is realeased just before El is arrested and later Chico. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

I wish Muthafunka would take his troll/wench ...
Yeah, Bobby DeBarge died of AIDS in 1995. Bobby (a former member of Switch who later joined DeBarge after El and Bunny left) is the one who went to jail with Chico DeBarge for drug trafficking. [Edited 9/11/07 19:48pm] THE TRAFFIC JAMMERS, The Org's house band: VAINANDY -- lead singer; NAJEE -- bass; THE AUDIENCE -- guitar; PHUNKDADDY -- rhythm guitar; ALEX de PARIS -- keyboards; Da PRETTYMAN -- keyboards; FUNKENSTEIN -- drums. A very ominous-looking picture from the Vibe serial on the DeBarge family:

[Edited 9/11/07 19:25pm] I remember hearing that he died but I don't remember it being reported that it was from AIDS. Sad as hell none the less. So much talent just truly wasted by that family.

Yeah, Bobby apparently gotten AIDS from his drug abuse (heroin). Reportedly, Bobby was sexually abused by his father and he never got over it, turning to drugs as an escape. The guy in the pink shirt is Mark "Marty" DeBarge. It's funny when you look at other DeBarge photos he looks nothing like he did on the "All This Love" album photo. Here he is roughly one year later on the "In a Special Way" album cover (he's on the far left):
From what I understand, Randy DeBarge (the one on the lower right on the "All This Love" photo I posted opposite El, and also the one on the far right on the "In a Special Way" photo) has been one of the few that has led a rather normal life. I thought of all the DeBarge males, Randy was the only one who looked masculine. It didn't matter what picture it was, El and James particularly looked feminine:
Separating El from his siblings was a bad move both for Motown and the DeBarge family. El was a well regarded singer but he didn't have the star power of other successful Motown divestments (Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson). Though it sounds like some members of DeBarge already were having personal problems, it seems like they really accelerated after El left the group. When El was in the group, they had this solid leaning on each other so if anything bad was to happen, the other sibling would often keep a close eye. By the time DeBarge started becoming BIG TIME (by 1984), however, drugs seemed to slowly drive them apart. James got off into his cocaine addiction before marrying Janet and then when El left the group, all hell broke loose: Bunny started having nervous breakdowns on pills, James lost his natural friggin' mind, who knows what happened with Marty (he probably went to rehab and got clean), Tommy got in drug trouble, Bobby and Chico were sentenced for drug trafficking, El got arrested for slapping someone, etc. All kinds of negative shit mirrored the great talents of the family. It's a crying shame, really.
