So, has anyone been to Etterlene "Mama" DeBarge's Web site?

http://www.mamadebarge.com

Among other things, you can buy her biography about raising her children in an apparently troubled marriage.

Also, Bunny DeBarge will be releasing a biography called "The Kept One."

Considering MsLegs follows you around like a lost dog looking for a chew toy, I would say it's appropriate.

When El was in the group, they had this solid leaning on each other so if anything bad was to happen, the other sibling would often keep a close eye. By the time DeBarge started becoming BIG TIME (by 1984), however, drugs seemed to slowly drive them apart. James got off into his cocaine addiction before marrying Janet and then when El left the group, all hell broke loose: Bunny started having nervous breakdowns on pills, James lost his natural friggin' mind, who knows what happened with Marty (he probably went to rehab and got clean), Tommy got in drug trouble, Bobby and Chico were sentenced for drug trafficking, El got arrested for slapping someone, etc. All kinds of negative shit mirrored the great talents of the family. It's a crying shame, really.

And just think, the article was written WELL before El got arrested recently and before Chico just got arrested. Now that's what I call "talking somebody up" lol .

The following-you-around part or the "wench" part?

I don't have any problems with you at all, but I do find MsLegs irritating and annoying. In fact, she follows you around so much (including putting up responses that say no more than, "I agree with you, MuthaFunka, because *YOU'RE THE MAN"*) I thought you had two aliases and you alternated between them to show "support."

Any way, I'm pretty sure I'll get some response from her. I'll move on and discuss the DeBarge family (and particularly DeBarge) ...

Man, apparently drugs have taken a toll on Bunny DeBarge:

She used to be so fine (although she always came off as cold, lacking a warm personality) during the days of DeBarge. In addition to the photos I have posted, here is another one from the "All This Love" era:

And according to the Web site, Bunny has 10 grandchildren!

One overlooked aspect of DeBarge is that all members except Bunny played instruments and they generally wrote their own music. El and James were keyboardists, Mark played the trumpet and Randy could play bass. Most people tend to think of them only as vocalists based on their TV appearances.

To me, DeBarge is one of those acts that I would call star-crossed; other acts I feel fall into this category are En Vogue, The Time, Guy and (more tragically) Heatwave and Donnie Hathaway. They had all the trappings to be even bigger than they were but Motown allegedly coerced El into leaving his siblings and it wrecked the siblings not only professionally but evidently personally.

My five favorite songs by DeBarge:

1.) All This Love
2.) Time Will Reveal
3.) Queen of My Heart
4.) I Like It
5.) Love Me in a Special Way

5. Time Will Reveal

It's ironic that for a group known as a soft-ballad act, DeBarge has had several songs used by rap acts in some fashion. "Stay with Me" (which was prominent in The Notorious B.I.G.'s major hit "One More Chance") and "A Dream" (another song I liked) have been sampled. The chorus for "I Like It" was interpolated in Wreckx-N-Effect's "Rump Shaker."

Here are mine:

1: Stay With Me
2: Love Me In A Special Way
3: Time Will Reveal
4: All This Love
5: You Wear It Well

In hindsight, for what it’s worth, I always felt a sadness about their music or maybe felt that they were never really happy or joyous no matter how much they smiled or uptempo the song. I never paid much attention to it then but now I can understand why.

I agree, JB. Songs like "Who's Holding Donna Now," "All This Love," "Love Me in a Special Way" and "Time Will Reveal" always spoke of loneliness, inadequacy and insecurity, but they really take on an extra bit of sadness when you hear about the family's tribulations.
