Listening to Love I'm reminded first of a few artists that took from the Beatles without their permission, and how illicit beginnings gave their samples an extra hit of fun. There's the entire Danger Mouse/Jay-Z mashup The Grey Album, of course, but I'm thinking of smaller details. When Ringo Starr's solo from "The End" appears early here I go immediately to Jason Forrest's "Ten Amazing Years", not Abbey Road. The swirl of strings from "Good Night" stitched here to Ringo's "Octopus's Garden" brings to mind Ekkehard Ehlers' drawn-out loop of the same phrase that comprises the entirety of one side of "Ekkehard Ehlers Plays John Cassavetes". Having all the mixes band-sanctioned loses a little something. Paul McCartney is said to have heard Love and remarked that he wished it went a bit further out. And it's hard not to agree, especially for people used to hearing mash-ups and guerilla sonic deconstruction via laptop. How badly do you want Yamatsuka Eye to do a Rebore Vol. 0 on this material? this entire paragraph is just a love letter to the reviewer's own self-important feeling of hipster cool. it has nothing to do with the album and is probably all lies. i hate reviews like that. although i'm not thrilled with the album itself (it could have gone farther, and probably needed someone fresh, instead of George Martin, to make it really dazzling and work on all levels).... the sound quality is making me cream my jeans.

how many of you are listening to the DVD-audio? Not the cd, not stereo, not the 5.1 dolby digital... but the DVD-Audio? You have to have at least 6 audio cables from your DVD player to your receiver to even be able to hear this....
just curious. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

i'm not doin the dvd thing.. but the quality of the regular version does justice for me.
i would also like to comment on how good george martin mixed all this up, it was done in a classy way, and if he would have further ventured out like mr. mccartney wanted him to do (although im sure i would have dug it), it wouldn't have gone over too well with long time fans, and critics... all you would hear is how they butchered beatles classics up.. here you still here the essence of each track, with a spin on it.. makes you feel as if even the samples that are in and out of each track sound give you a full song feeling.. i'm impressed | |

The difference is like a mono portable radio to a hifi stereo.... like vhs to hidef.... it's a dramatic change, it actually scares you when George Harrison starts singing Guitar weeps, it sounds completely like he's in front of you. the drums kicking in on strawberry fields.... it sounds powerful like a storm, it not out of the left speaker, it the left side of your room and sounds like it's beyond the walls. I wish 5.1 was more widespread. It really makes stereo suck. cd = 16 bit (range of volume) 44.1 khz digital approximation of sound, 2 channels, and it sounds very good (your stereo can spread it across a surround system and subwoofer by guessing)... till now... dvd-a = 24 bit 126 khz REALITY! and has 5 separate distinct PLANNED channels plus the mastered and mixed subwoofer frequencies to give it that real punch. In my opinion: while I enjoy the new mixes and fidelity, the actual mash up stuff is not all that smooth and astonishing. For example, compare it to that Prince mix by DJ foefur that runs over an hour long. That prince mix of songs is genius. So I more enjoy the dimension of the 5.1 mix, and the more "intact" songs. The Within You with the beat of Tomorrow Never Knows works well though, but there are other moments where stuff doesn't. OF course I hope the show comes out on DVD, because the choreography might make all the difference to me. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid
