Miles Davis being bisexual is rumoured only. Never been confirmed. Though his younger brother was/ is known to be homosexual, according to books I have read.

You might want to check out Ian Carr's biography of Miles Davis. Ian Carr is a highly respected UK jazz musician whose book was thoroughly researched. He mentions Miles' bisexuality in it. Face it, he liked the dick and the pussy.

Read it years ago. Ian Carr was very vague about this area (and rightly so, as it's hardly the most important aspect of the man). I've read most of the Miles books there have been over the years. To my knowledge, none of them have specifically named any man Miles may have been involved with, or any specific incident of homo/ bisexuality. Though, if Miles was bisexual (and had a problem with it), it may at least partially explain his attitude towards women and some other aspects of his personality, such as his anger issues. One things' for sure, he was a complex and often troubled man.

Personally, I don't have to know a musician was a 'nice person' in private to enjoy their music, and if they weren't 'nice' a lot of the time, then it just shows their flawed humanity. Everybody's done bad stuff in some way or other if they live long enough. Some of the great bluesmen had done time for murder, but I think they did great music. It is possible, I think, to separate the music from the person, to some extent.

But who knows what went off with Miles? I'm off to listen to his music, which is what really matters in the end. Great music will always outlast any character flaws of the originator. smile

Well, in the book Pryor Convictions Richard Pryor mentioned being freaked out by seeing Dizzy and Miles tongue kissing in a dressing room. I didn't believe it when my sister read it to me. We both brushed it off as Richard being coked out of his mind and "seeing things." Maybe we were in denial. I read Miles's bio and he never mentioned a penchant for the male species, but who really knows.

Seriously, it fell into the category of TMI when my sister read the book. We were just in shock. If you can grab a copy of Pryor Convictions, it is a very interesting read. Richard Pryor really was something else. He is quite candid in that book, which I guess you would expect from Richard. But yeah, the Dizzy and Miles thing freaked us out.

Whatever he was, Miles was definitely pretty wild! Does anybody remember the Prince interview when he mentioned that he had seen Miles naked? During his '99 interview with The Guardian(UK)( he was still TAFKAP at the time):

"The Guardian |
November 21, 1999:

"....I wonder why he feels more himself now that he's not "Prince".

'I was always myself,' he says. 'I'm not schizophrenic. It's all you; it's just which part of yourself you show.' He tells a story about Miles Davis, his late friend and
mentor: 'Miles would show you what part of himself he felt like,' he says. 'Man, sometimes he'd show you much more than you wanted . I'd go round to his place and he'd come to the door butt-naked, just to see my reaction.' He gives a look of stage horror at the recollection, gasps. 'And that was something you really didn't want to see. All of human history was on that body. See that, and you wouldn't want to eat for a week'....."

By 'character flaws', I meant partly his womanising, and also his woman beating, drug problems etc. No homophobia intended, if that's where you're coming from. smile

I simply meant that in the future, when he's been dead 100 years, nobody will really care much about who the guy was (unlike now), but they will care more about his music and what that meant to the development of 20th century popular music. Just like with Leonardo da Vinci (To get a little deep here), his sexuality was a part of who he was, and yes, it probably informed his art, but there's far more interesting stuff to talk about him than whether he liked men or women. smile

Next time somebody needs 2 see Prince's humour, please remind them of this. I need 2 see footage of that interview.

The thing is... Miles would think that was funny. That's pure love, right there. Classic humour.

I'd really like to read this book.
I'm just a little worried that i'd have to wade through a sea of spiritual psychobabble if she's anything like Carlos... wink

When a baby comes you can smell two things: the smell of flesh, which smells like chicken soup, and the smell of lilies, the flower of another garden, the spiritual garden.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Angels cry because they want to experience what you and I feel: the moment. They live in eternity. They don't know what it is like to read a newspaper and get ink on your fingers. They don't know what it is like to take your shoes off and wiggle your toes under the dinner table.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Sometime ago in a meditation, angels requested that I use my music to wake others up from this 2000-year sleep of good and evil-to access all that is stored in our DNA and cellular makeup and memory. It's time to rise and enter the fifth dimension. In the third dimension we have good and evil, right and wrong. In the fifth we have a resonance with light and splendor. This enables one to communicate with the Earth. When the Earth perceives us as being light-hearted, she does not shake as much and we, as residents of the fifth dimension, can change the disastrous predictions of the Aborigines, American Indians, Nostradamas and the Bible.

...I'm sure his intentions are good. It just sounds a little loopy at times. confused

hey TA, I thought the same..but his wife is a great story teller..and she explains in LONG detail how they both became so over the top spiritual...the book focuses on that a lot but its constantly woven with the rock and roll lifestyle of the time as well...Its a nice little "break" from the typical rockstar bio ! wink

lol Read the book,it is very good.Deborah is a GREAT writer...I like the way she "describes" things, especially her childhood memories. From reading her book,I would say that she is probably more down-to-earth than her husband, although she shares most of his spiritual beliefs.Read this book!!

I hear that she is now writing a fiction book, can't wait to read that one.

I saw the book at Border's around May-June of this year, and funny that my sister ordered the book as well as a bio on Sylvester. The stories she tell are a open window of time, taking us into the 1960's, 70's and the lifestyle she was introduced to. She can be found in the photo collage of the back of RIOT. I never knew about Carlos cheating on her or any of the trauma Sly put her through. Good book to own.
