And there's the dumb as donuts proof right there.

Did you even read the tiniest bit of the fucking article? Al does not even come close to whining, you clueless dolts - he is answering a question! And politely pointing out that he gets more income from physical sales. And for those of you with the 'no simpathy for the rich' attitude, you better self-check, because you know nothing about these people's finances. Nothing! Your assumptions are hilarious!

"_____ is famous - so they are rich!"

Also, the 'negotiations' with major distributors are not yard sale transactions; you either play the record company's game or nada. I'm amazed at the lack of empathy for artists on the part of people who claim to appreciate them so much. But the truth is, you don't really appreciate them at all, do you? It's all just wallpaper to an iPod user and that's the whole problem in a nutshell.

HERE's The Post Of The Week!

I am really disappointed by some of the responses on here. Some of you dont' seem to care whether these artists who make the music you love live or die by some of the responses I'm reading here. It just shows how precious little some of you REALLY know about the music industry.

Let's use Van Hunt as an example. I have some friends who work close to him and do some booking for him. ON a theatre show, he may make about $3000. But out of that, he has to pay his band, pay any production costs for the gig, as well as pay for food, hotel, etc. Now how much do you think he gets to take home after all is said and done? Probably not much. And this man has a wife and child to support.

Did you also know that a 4 member band who sells 500,000 records MIGHT take home about $18,000 apiece after all is paid for? Contrary to what most of you believe, most artists dont' have the power in the industry that Prince has. Wake up!

AS an artist, I feel a bit insulted at some of the responses. No, I'm not making much money, and no I'm not signed, but really, most signed artists aren't much better off than I am. Yes, a mojority of the problems stem from the industry and from artists selling themselves at too low a price, but the general lack of respect for artists by the public doesnt' help. Yeah, we make the music that enriches your lives but some of you dont' care whether we eat or survive so we can write more of that music. "Shut the fuck up and write another hit so I can put it on my iPod." Is it really all that wrong for an artist to demand a fair wage?

Yeah this probably sounds a little dramatic, but the total lack of respect by some of you really irks me. Why dont' you try going a week without listening to music at all and see what kind of quality of life you have.

"Lack of respect"? I,along with many other music lovers on this site, have spent THOUSANDS of dollars supporting the artists I like.We spend hundreds of dollars to see these people in concert,we buy all their CDs and singles, their DVDs,T-shirts,tour merchandise and anything else they release. We support these artists tremendously.Hell,in 1994 when Prince was feuding with Warners,I even joined a letter-writing campaign to protest against Warners and to allow Prince the freedom to release 'The Gold Experience' (remember those flyers that Paisley Park released, urging fans to help him out?).When these people release music,I go straight to the record store to buy their CD,sometimes paying as much as $16 for their CD.I do my part.I have never downloaded or bought any music from iTunes.I like to have the actual CD with the liner notes, photos, etc. So don't you dare suggest that I don't respect these artists. My only problem is,I'm sick of hearing certain artists complain about their finances.Yes,I'm aware that some of them are not rich and that the music industry is unfair. But honestly,we all have our OWN finances/jobs/careers to worry about.I do my part to help these artists, but if I lost my job tomorrow, will they help me out? Will Prince join ME in protesting against my employer? Do they even care about MY finances?

like i said thats where the problem lies, we look at it like "They, They, They" like musicians are some people that live on a hill ,lets be real about 1% of them are getting paid well. But lets look at the lower 99% who dont get paid, an average artist that sells 100,000 if even that much makes about 50,000 off that record if they are lucky, now minus there video costs, touring costs, and u realize they are almost doing it for nothing, while someone at a label who doesnt know music makes 100,000 a year while u pay 17 bucks for a cd.

you know what? i don't care who's rich because i know i ain't. i want music and i want it conveniently and legally. if i only like 4 out of 12 songs, i wanna be able to buy those 4 songs. its better for the artist that i buy those 4 songs than if i buy nothing at all.
tehe...exactly. I'm pretty sure as hell that they're doing better than I am financially at the moment, even if they're not millionaires with huge mansions. lol

and if they're not...hey, there's others doing far worse than us. like i said earlier, i'll fight to the death for fair trade but i hardly consider worrying about an artist's contractual benefits (in a field he chose to enter knowing it might not be financially lucrative) as a fair trade problem.

So if u are at job and its something u like doing, and when u sign on the rules were one way and then suddenly they change, or u see someone doing the same job but getting another pay rate, youre not gonna bitch, youre gonna say well i guess i should quit and go elsewhere, if only the real world were that easy. I look at someone re-doing their contract as nothing more than asking for a raise or a promotion, or something that we feel we deserve. Its like here in NYC when the transit strike happend last year everyone was saying "those bastards are getting 60,000 a year why are they striking", but in reality there were things in their contracts that needed to be reworked. I think its the same for this Ipod debate, first of all I dont think Apple should be getting more than the artist get, plain and simple, and unless u are signing a contract now, Digital media has never been on a contract, so everyones needs to reworked, like i said expect to see the Apple prices to go up next year, the days of 99 cents are over, lots of artists now are blocking their cds from being downloadable due to this.

I would absolutely bitch, moan, and work to better my situation.

And 99.9% of ya'll would look at me and say, "well, sucks for you dude. Good luck with all that..." That's the real world.

btw, if anything Apple's been fighting the record labels fairly succesfully to keep its prices right where they are.

delicious

Why does anyone give a rats ass about how much money these people make. Buy the music or dont. Jestyr or whatever just sounds to me like someone who read something and like a TRUE DOLT agreed with whatever it said and now wants to sound knowledgeable and superior. The type of person who changes their mind when they read something else that says otherwise.I bet he's the kind of person who sees a movie but can't decide whether he liked it or not. so reads a review and agrees with that.

Im just being a prick. PS Superman rules .. because I said so.
