Music: Non-Prince Pazz & Jop

Every year, a buttload of critics are polled and the results form an exhaustive conglomerate list of the top albums of the year. Here is the result of the 2004 Pazz & Jop. I thought it would be interesting to see the results of a similar exercise here at the org.

Here are the rules.

  • You have 100 total points to distribute among 10 albums from 2005.
  • The maximum an album can receive is 30 points.
  • The minimum an album can receive is 5 points.
  • Ties are broken by the total number of ballots per album.
  • Compilations are ineligible for inclusion.
  • *Album must be from 2005*.

*I'll have to be a bit flexible about this as albums can be released at different times in different years.

I'll use my ballot as an example.

1. Annie- Anniemal (20 points)
2. Arcade Fire- Funeral (16)
3. Madonna- Confessions on a Dancefloor (13)
4. Gorillaz- Demon Days (11)
5. Franz Ferdinand- You Could Have It So Much Better (10)
6. Depeche Mode- Playing the Angel (7)
7. LCD Soundsystem- LCD Soundsystem (7)
8. New Order- Waiting for the Sirens' Call (6)
9. Wolf Parade- Apologies to the Queen Mary (5)
10. Vive la Fête- Grand Prix (5)

It may be more fun if the ballots are kept secret until the end. If you want to contribute, send me an orgNote with your picks and they will be posted after the results are finalized. Post on this thread to say that you contributed, but don't post your list here!

You order your top 10 albums of the year. You have 100 total points to distribute among these 10 albums. The most any album can receive is 30 points, and the least any album can receive is 5 points.

My list at the beginning is an example. I first ordered by top 10 albums of the year, then divided the points as I saw fit so that the total was 100 and each album was between 5 and 30 points.

I submitted my 2005 list. I disqualified Goldfrapp and Saint Etienne since the U.S. releases of their latest albums will be in 2006 with possibly (in St. Etienne's case definitely) different tracklists. That might make Goldfrapp's 'Supernature' a shoe-in for best album of 2006 for me.

I'm very intrigued by Goldfrapp but have yet to hear anything. I've seen her album available as an import for like $30, but I've held off for the US release.

If you like Annie and Madonna, I can't see how you wouldn't like Goldfrapp's latest album. The U.S. release date is in March I believe.

I think all of Goldfrapp's videos are amazing. I dare say they are on Björk-level when it comes to making videos. They need to release a video compilation posthaste!

Moonbeam already provided a sample point system in the first post if it's too hard for you. Or if you don't want any albums to have the same number of points use this one:

#1 = 18 points
#2 = 14
#3 = 12
#4 = 11
#5 = 10
#6 = 9
#7 = 8
#8 = 7
#9 = 6
#10 = 5

Now you don't have any excuse!

bad spelling edit
