I LOVE the song. I haven't heard anything else by them though. I guess I should check the rest of their stuff out.

It's in the movie Cat's Eye too. The part where they're shocking that man's wife and making her dance.

They're a one-hit wonder. They're other stuff didn't live up to that track.

I'll try to find them at Emule or somewhere to download, because if 96 Tears is as good as it gets then it's no point in buying it.

Maybe theAudience can clue you in on their lesser known material. I've largely read that it was lackluster, so I didn't check it out. If I were you, I'd stick to just that one song (which is a classic) or get an oldies compilation. At least you'd get some variety.

lol True one hit wonders. Became part of the Cameo/Parkway family.

The bulk of their other songs could have been titled 97 Tears, 98 Tears, 99 Tears, etc.
A song from their 2nd album, Can't Get Enough of You Baby, was also done by The Toys, The Four Seasons and most notably by Smash Mouth
Smash Mouth used The Mysterians arrangement complete with cheese filled Farfisa-like organ sound.

? could certainly be considered one of the original weirdo-persona front men.

I became curious about the value of an old 45 so I went on MusicStack just to get a rough and dirty idea.

I Want To Hold Your Hand $5-$28

96 Tears - 2 available $8.49 & $10.45

Listened to it.
Did not like it much.
Deleted it.

It's a bit too Doors-y to me.

Using 96 Tears as the jumping off point, all the tunes listed use a similar cheesy organ sound.
My criteria was that the "cheese" was produced by a...

...Vox or Farfisa category instrument.

Even though Dave "Baby" Cortez doesn't get the sound of Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff or even Booker T. Jones,
he still plays a Hammond instrument which is why he wasn't included.

He does manage to make it sound rather cheesy though. lol
